Video Transcript for Breaking Down the Curt 7-Way RV-Style Trailer Connector

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at the Curt 7-Way RV-Style Trailer Connector for the vehicle end. This 7 pole RV-Style trailer connector hardwires to your vehicle. It accepts the 7-Way plug on your trailer to power your trailers signal lights. It's constructed of a durable molded plastic construction so it's going to resist rust and corrosion. It has a spring loaded lid with an internal gasket that's designed to keep out dirt and moisture.Mounting bracket is not included. If you're in need of one you can check out some great options at etrailer.com.

The mount holes on this unit up and down. They're separated on center by an 1 1/2 and then side to side they're separated on center by 2 1/2 inches. Now, when you're ready to install the unit you'll need to take this back piece off. The reason why I like this connector is because it's a twist off application. A lot of the older style plugs use a screw to hold that in place.

You just grab it, twist it, and it pops right off giving you really easy access to the connection terminals. Then you would place your wiring through this portion here, feed it out this end and then make sure that you connect all of your individual wires to the correct terminals. Each terminal is labeled for its function so that allows for easy connecting. Once you have it all connected, place this piece back on, twist it to secure it in place, and on the bottom side here there's a set screw that'll need to be tightened. That closes this portion around your wiring to create a really nice, tight seal. That's gonna do it for today's look at the Curt 7-Way RV-Style Trailer Connector for the vehicle end..

We accidentally backed into a ramp and busted our original Curt connector that came with our wiring harness. It however did not come with a diagram, and the annotations in the plastic housing were incorrect for our vehicle.

This is my third order which speaks for itself. Best Customer Support, order handling, shipping expediency, packaging , price and product quality. Lori B took my order over the phone. She was very courteous, knowledgeable and strongly represents the Companies Customer
Service Policy. Looking forward to Order #4...Wentzville, Mo., (The Show Me State) and they sure showed me.

Perfect for my application. Mounted an Ammo box on the tongue of my stock trailer and brought all wires up through the bottom of box and connected them to the female plug inside the box. Made a 3 pigtail to connect from trailer to the truck. When finished towing I roll up the pigtail and put it in the Ammo box. This protects the pigtail from the elements and cows chewing on the pigtail.

Excellent product. Swapping out leads from old OEM Ford 7 pin to this was as simple as comparing the Ford lead function to the Aluma trailer lead function and making the swap. Made the connection to the trailer w/o cutting any wires! Re-drilled my Ford bracket and attached the connector w/o issue...except my locating the holes...had a bit of elongation on the bracket holes to properly align.

These are amazing...product and customer service are amazing. I would highly recommend a 5/8 hitch pin lock tho...we love etrailer

  • Replacing a 6-Pin Vehicle Side Connector With a 7-Way Blade Connector
I have included images below of the 6-Pin # PK11609 and the 7-Blade # C58155 connectors that you will be wiring. I do recommend using the positions rather than trying to go off the wiring colors as the colors can vary. You can use a Test Light # PTW2993 to verify the wires are in the correct places on your current 6-pin connector.

  • Where Do You Connect the Blue Brake Controll Wire If The Blue Wire Is Used For ABS on 7-Pin?
Since you are going to be wiring for a 7-Way Blade # C58155 style connector you are going to run a separate blue wire from the Brake Controller # HA100400C to this connector. The 7-Pin # R7CB connector you have on your 2011 International 8600 Transtar is designed to be used on trailers which have air brakes and uses the wiring differently. I have linked a image with the different functions shown for the different connectors and you can see they have some of the same functions but may are...

If your truck already has a 7-way which uses the Curt Universal Wiring Harness Connector # C56229 for the 7-way, you will be able to use the Hopkins Endurance 5th Wheel/Gooseneck 90-Degree Wiring Harness # 41157. This contains a 10' harness which will tee into your current wiring. You can mount the other 7-way in you bed and use the 7-Way Round RV Style Trailer Connector # A7WCB to run the wiring for your camper shell. Otherwise you will be able to splice the end of the harness to hardwire...

  • 7-Way Male to Female Extension Cord That is Expandable
While our typical 7-way extensions like the Curt Universal 5th Wheel/Gooseneck 7-Way Extension # C56080 are a straight cable you can make an extension with a coiled cable. We have the Bargman 7-Way, RV-Style Connector w/ 6' Long Coiled Cable # WG54006-043 or 12' Long Coiled Cable # WG54006-046 that you can wire to a Curt 7-Way RV-Style Trailer Connector # C58155. The coiled cable will help protect the cord from dragging but gives you the expandability of its length. I have included a wiring...

  • Recommended Trailer 7-Way Wire Size
The Curt 7-Way RV-Style Trailer Connector - Vehicle End # C58155 doesn't have a specified maximum wire gauge. We choose to use 10 gauge wire # 10-1-1 when hardwiring in most cases. We do directly hardwire that 12v 10 gauge wire without any step down connector. Most manufacturers use 12 and 14 gauge wires for different functions on pre-wired assemblies.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer 7-Way Connection Between 2004 Chevy 1500 and 2015 Ford F-150
The Ford Replacement OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness, 7-Way # 118242 is the correct harness for certain Ford F-150 models from 1997 to 2004. It uses factory specific plugs and then connects to a US Car connector at the 7-way and that portion is universal yet the t-connector is not. It sounds like you have a trailer that works on one and not the other and the issue with that situation is normally a ground issue on the trailer itself. Check the main ground near the coupler or battery...

  • Solution for Older 7-Way Plug Not Fitting Curt 7-Way
It's probably best to replace the 7-way socket with a new one since the tester 7-way you have tried does. So for that I'd go with a standard plug like the part # A7WCB. This will plug right into your Curt connector # C58155.

  • Is There an Adapter To Go From 5-Pin Flat on 2017 Toyota Highlander to 7-Pin Blade on Boat Trailer?
It sounds like you are trying to go from a 5-pin flat connector on your 2017 Toyota Highlander to a 7-way connector on your Ranger boat trailer. This type of connector is not made since the 7-way wan only designed to be used on trailer that require either a charge line or electric actuated trailer brakes. If your boat trailer does not require either of these the simplest thing would be to change the trailer to a 5-Way Flat # HM47910. Otherwise you could create an adapter using the same...

Standard trailer wiring circuits on 7-ways like the part # C58155 and # PK12706 are rated for up to 40 amps so if you wanted to use a 7-way like this to power a horn that is rated for 13 amps you certainly could.

  • Availability Of a Trailer Battery To Tail Light Flasher When Trailer Is Disconnected
While there is not a single item that will do what you are looking for you can build one quite easily. First you will need a 7-Way # C58155 which will allow you to connect directly to the trailer 7-way. Then you will need either the Custer Single Function LED Strobe Driver # STR-QRLY if your trailer has LED tail lights with up to 420 milliamps of draw, or you will need to source a flasher from a local auto parts store if you have incandescent tail lights. • Solution for Replacing 6-Way Square Connector for Trailer that Needs Battery Charged
All of the wires of the 6-way square part # 37995 are 18 gauge so this would not be ideal for use with a trailer that needs a battery charge circuit. I'd recommend switching the trailer and tow vehicle to a 7-way that you could use with a heavier gauge wire. On the trailer side the easiest way to pull that off is with the part # 277-000141. Then on the tow vehicle side you'd want a 7-way like the # C58155 and you'd be set. If you need any 10 gauge wire we also have the part # 10-1-1 which...

  • Can Curt 7-Way # C58155 Fit as Replacement for PK11916
Both the Curt 7-way part # C58155 and the Pollak # PK11916 use the same round 7-way wiring connector and would fit your 2005 Chevy Silverado. The advantage to the Pollak for your truck is the twist lock style of fit that allows it to fit right into the bumper mounting location on your truck for a cleaner install. The Curt would fit but would require drilling the bracket # C67UR to the bottom of your lower bumper. From a wiring and connector standpoint the two are identical.

  • 7 Way Trailer Plug Will Not Stay Seated In the Vehicle 7 Way
This can be caused by a few things, but as you have enough slack in the wire, it is most likely just one of two things. The door flap, for the lack of a better way to put it, on the 7 Way plug on the towing vehicle snaps down on a tab on the 7 Way plug coming from the trailer. These can break off which causes them to come uncoupled. If this is the case, the 7 Way trailer end will need to be replaced with something like the Optronics # A7WCB. But it could also just not be seated all the...

  • Can the 12V Power Wire In a 7 Way Be Used to Charge a Lithium Battery
Rich, the 12V wire is not going to charge your lithium battery well. Typically when you start your vehicle and your alternator is charging the starting battery, you will get some charging to your lithium battery while the alternator is outputting at bulk or absorption voltage, but once the starting battery reaches the float stage you will get a very minimal amount of charging to your battery. So, you're going to need to run the power from the start battery instead of the 12v pin on the 7-way.

  • Is There A Higher Rated 7-Way Connector For Powering A 12v Fuel Transfer Pump
Hey Mark, There aren't higher rated 7-pin plugs available but what we usually do in a situation like this would be to splice in some Anderson-style connectors # DL24085 with a higher gauge wire. These connectors can use up to 6 gauge wire but for 40 amps you can just use 8 gauge wire from your local hardware store.
