Do I Need A Tail Light Converter?

Difference between 2 wire systems and 3 wire systems

Some vehicles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals run on separate wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) But most trailers run on a 2-wire system, which means the brake and turn signals travel along a single wire. You'll notice that, on your trailer, the brake light will flash for the turn signals.

If your vehicle operates on a 3-wire system, it will need to be converted so it will be compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This is where a tail light converter comes into play. This converter lets you combine the brake and turn signal functions of your vehicle so they run on a single wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights.

Powered by Your Battery

This converter won't overload or cause damage to your system because it pulls power straight from your vehicle's battery. So you can be sure that your trailer lights will activate no matter what type of bulbs your vehicle has - or your trailer, for that matter.

Powered Tail Light Converter Installation

This kit comes with all the wiring you'll need to convert your vehicle's lighting system to match your trailer's. The powered converter box has splice-in wires on one end and a harness with a 4-way flat vehicle-end connector on the other. It also comes with a power wire that will connect to your battery so your electrical system doesn't get overloaded.

To begin the installation, use a circuit tester (sold separately) to double-check the function of each wire on your vehicle's tail light wiring harness. The color/function of the splice-in wires on this converter may not match the color/function of those on your vehicle, so you'll want to be sure to check all of the wire functions first. Once you've figured out the functions of your vehicle's wiring, use the included quick-splice connectors to connect the corresponding wires on the trailer connector. Quick-splices, or "wire taps," offer a quick way to make connections without you having to strip and twist wires. Just place the wires in one of the taps and snap the cover down.

Using double-sided tape, stick the converter box to a flat surface inside your vehicle near the tail lights. It's helpful to clean the surface first so the tape can adhere fully.

Once the converter box is spliced in, you need to run the power wire up to your battery. Be sure to remove the fuse before connecting anything so you don't blow it! You can put it back in once everything has been installed. To hook up to your battery, you'll need to disconnect the negative cable from your battery and attach the power wire to the positive terminal with the included ring terminal.

How to find a grounding point

Find a raw, unpainted metal surface to use as a grounding point and secure the white ground wire using the self-tapping screw. Cleaning the surface before securing the white wire will ensure the converter is fully grounded. If you have a 2-wire system, the red brake wire will need to be grounded as well. You can do that in the same way, using an extra ring terminal (sold separately). Finally, secure the converter wires to your vehicle using included cable ties.

Quick Tips:

  • Butt connectors - especially heat-shrink ones - provide the most secure, longest-lasting connection, so we'd recommend you grab a few and swap them out for the quick-splices in this kit.
  • Use a circuit tester on the plug terminals once the harness is installed to make sure everything's working. There's nothing worse than figuring out that you have a bad ground or a faulty connection right before you're about to hit the road.
  • Be sure to put a little bit of dielectric grease on the 4-way plug to protect the terminals from dirt, grime, and corrosion.

Built Using Surface-Mount Technology

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This construction method involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a smaller circuit board that provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability, and durability.

Circuit boards constructed using SMT perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, increasing durability and lifespan. In addition, lower resistance levels ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Worked without issue. Clip on connectors are a bit fiddly, but that’s not the kits problem, otherwise everything worked as advertised.

by:

Easy to install and solid build quality. The wire taps this kit comes with also work very well! I used a wrench to easily squeeze the wire tap plate down, before shutting the blue clip.

For those of you that want a super knit picky review: the double sided tape isn’t strong so I used gorilla double sided tape instead. I wish it came with at least one more wire crimp (ended up using my own when I ran out of the two in the kit).

Highly recommend curt, I’ve installed this on my car, and a few of my families cars. It’s always worked like a charm with no issues. One of the cars has been using this curt wire for almost 10 years, no issues at all.

2013 Porsche Cayenne

Product worked well. Installed on a 2013 Porsche Cayenne S for a bike rack that mounts in the hitch reciever and has brake/turn/tail lights on it. Only reason I didn't give five stars is I'm not a fan of scotch-lok connections and it would be nice if the wires to connect to the vehicle harness were a little longer. Didn't hinder installation or operation, strictly a preference thing. No hesitancy to use this kit again.

Original order trailer hitch and light converter kit had wrong converter kit. Replacement for converter kit shipped to wrong address (garage I hired to install trailer hitch). I had notified etrailer that I wanted replacement converter kit set to my home. No offer from etrailer to rectify the situation by sending another kit to my home and sending a prepaid shipping envelope to the garage to return the mistakenly delivered converter kit.

2015 Honda Fit

I bought this kit for my 2015 Honda Fit. All is fine with three exceptions:
1. The green wire that runs over to the right side turn signal was not long enough to reach the right side turn signal wiring!!!! CRAZY, no excuse for that.
2. The blue connectors included do not work. When you clamp them down they do not make contact with the Honda Fit wires. Apparently the Honda wires are too small. Curt should know this. I had to remove all blue connectors and carefully squeeze the little metal plates inside the connectors so that they make contact with the tiny Honda wires. It was a frustrating pain in the rear to diagnose the problem and fix it. Come on Curt, FIX this issue.
3. Lastly, some of the Honda Fit wires were not the colors that Curt said they were. You must test all Honda wires, regardless of colors before making connections, not the end of the world, but confusing none the less .

Easy installation and the best value. The extra money for the "kit" is only needed for the butt connectors and the in-line fuse, but having it all together in a package was certainly convenient. If you already have butt connectors (16-18 gauge?) and you can source an in-line fuse line cheaply, you can save some money. The extra lead for the positive power line in the kit is unnecessary on the BMW X5 F15 depending on where you're locating the box. If I had needed it, my package was short one butt connector to have used it (the image of the converter box shows a pre-attached butt connector to a black lead...that wasn't there on mine and I used one from the separate packaged installation "kit"). The installation video for the BMW X5 F15 (2014-2018) was perfect.

Only a 3-star rating because of short leads on the product. If the power wire were just 6-12" longer it would be perfect (I still didn't need any extension), and the green lead for the right tail-light is too short. I was able to get it there...barely...and I'll need to come back and splice in an extra 12-18" of wire so there is no risk of it being pulled when servicing the batteries or compartments. The product only includes the bare minimum lengths, and even then it only worked because I was able to tap it into the larger wire bundle closer to the bottom of the compartment rather than at just few wires separately leading to the tail light.

2015 BMW X5

Love this system! Installation on my 2015 X5 was very simple, straightforward. I did have issues for a period where I kept blowing the 10 amp power line fuse. Customer support was good, and I eventually found that mice had chewed into my trailer wiring causing intermittent shorts. After fixing the wiring on my trailer, the Curt system has performed flawlessly!

2015 BMW X5

Installed on a 2015 BMW X5. Super easy to hook up and lights all work great. Installed when I put on the hitch so we had lights hookup. Would highly recommend and super handy.

by:

Works as expected. I cut the trailer connector off and spliced in additional wire so the I could route it through a grommet and do a permanent installation at the hitch receiver.

by:

Really straight forward, I would suggest a longer cable and receiver mount kit as an option. I'd pay extra for one.

  • Why is a Converter Needed to Add a Trailer Wiring Harness to a 2013 Infiniti JX35
The wiring on your 2013 Infiniti JX35 is a bit more complicated than trailer wiring. It has separate turn signals and brake lights. But on a trailer the turn signals and brake lights are combined on each side. So a converter is needed to take the separate signals from the vehicle and combine them to the combined signals used by a trailer. The converter box also offers a degree of circuit protection. If there was a short on the trailer it would fry the box and not the vehicle wiring/electronics. If...
