Installation

To determine where to splice into your vehicle's tail light wiring, you will need to consult the included instructions. Use quick-splice connectors to attach the input wires of the tail light converter to the corresponding wires from your vehicle.

Then locate a clean, flat surface inside or outside of your vehicle and adhere the black converter box. Find a raw metal surface to use as a ground point and secure the white ground wire using a ring terminal and screw (sold separately). Finally, secure the converter wires to your vehicle using cable ties (sold separately).

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

Because most trailers run on a 2-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on 1 wire - the signals from your vehicle may have to be converted to be compatible with your trailer's wiring. If your vehicle operates on a 3-wire system, which means that it has separate brake and turn signals, then those signals will need to be combined so that they run on 1 wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. This converter will also ensure that your trailer's lights illuminate fully, even if your vehicle has pulse-width modulation (PWM) wiring. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Review of CURT Trailer Wiring - 24 Volt Trailer Converter - C46WR

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this CURT 24 volt taillight converter. This converter is going to ensure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer. This is gonna work for your 24 volt two-wire, three-wire, and pulse width modulation systems. Now, keep in mind this is only gonna be compatible with 24 volt vehicle wiring systems and 24 volt trailer wiring systems.

So, if you use this product with a 24 volt vehicle wiring system in your standard 12 volt trailer, it can cause issues with your warranty. It can cause lamp failure, overheating, and potentially, fire. So, you wanna make sure that both of your vehicle and your trailer are needing that 24 volt system. And if it is, this system is going to work really great for you to convert your signals over for your trailer. This is going to connect directly to your vehicle's wiring.

You get about two feet of wire here and they do have a clear indicator on which colors go to which wire. So, you just wanna test your wires on your vehicle, figure out which ones are sending the signal that you need and then tap into that with the color-coded wire that will match that signal. Now, this converter does not come with any quick splices. We do have those available here at etrailer.com to make it more convenient and quick for you to get this wired in place. This also does not come with any ring terminals or butt connectors to make your connections and ground your system.

So, all those additional little hardware components you will have to purchase separately. You may already have them if you do this kind of work regularly but if not, we do have them available here at etrailer.com for you. Just wanna make sure you're getting the right gauge size for your vehicle wiring. This is gonna provide maximum of 2.1 amps per circuit for your stop and turn lights and 7.5 amps per circuit for your taillights. It is constructed here in the USA using surface mount technology, or SMT, for a nice, consistent, reliable performance.

It's gonna maximize your trailer's light yield and intensity while producing minimal heat. It is going to resist water and vibration thanks to the potted enclosure and it's gonna ensure superior operation in the rough road conditions. And so, as you're going down the road, you're not gonna have to worry about your wires coming loose inside there. As long as they're connected well, it'll hold up really well for you. They do include some very simple instructions to walk you through the installation process. But definitely something that we want to make sure that you have all those other components or that you can wire it in safely to your vehicle and your trailer. That completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

  • Wiring Needed For Adding a 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector On a Toyota Land Cruiser With 24V Power
First you are going to need to determine if your Toyota Land Cruiser has a full 24 volt wiring system or if the 24 volt is only ran on the starting system. This was the most common way several of the vehicles were wired so the tail lighting and other functions would all still use 12 volt power. This would allow you to use the Wiring Harness # C59496 to get a 4-way flat connector. A Multimeter # PT89ZR can be used to verify if your current lighting is 12 volt or 24 volt. If you have 24...
