Video Transcript for Review of MaxxTow Trailer Winch - Standard Worm Gear Hand Winch - MT70193

Ellen: Hey everyone. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com. Today we're taking a look at the MaxxHaul Worm Gear Hand Winch. This allows you to lift heavy stuff, pull heavy stuff without having to throw out your back or your shoulder. The nice thing about it being a Worm Gear drive is that's not going to allow the load to pull on the handle and drop things or pull them off. So as you're turning it and you stop or let go of that handle, you can't pull on this to turn that spiral in there, it's physics, the gears can't turn a spiral.

So the only slack that I'm getting out of this is just the wire rope stretching but other than that, it's just not going to move. So it's always really nice if we're trying to lift anything like I've seen some customers use this for lifting a kettle over a fire. They've had it kind of set up with a teepee or a spit over their fire. And so they're able to lower that to determine the heat on their kettle. Other customers have used it for lifting an antenna, all kinds of stuff, all kinds of applications for this. And that's the really nice thing is that if you happen to let go of that handle, everything's not going to come crashing down.

It's going to stay in place and leap, basically leave it where you left it. It also enables us to move more weight with such a small winch. So this has a capacity of 2000 Ibs, which is pretty high for a standard duty winch. So it should be up to the task for a lot of jobs that you might have for it. You want to stay safe though, and always make sure that you're being careful with loading this down. It's usually good to go off of the lowest weight you can or get something that's higher rated than what you're actually going to be lifting.

And also keep in mind that as the wire rope is run on that drum, you do lose a little bit of weight capacity. We do have articles to illustrate that a little bit more fully, but just want to keep that in mind. So let's take a little closer look at that weird Worm Gear drive you can see in there, it's just a big spiral and it does have some lubricant on there. We just put that on there to make it a little easier to run in and out. The one bad thing I will say about this is that it takes a long time to spool out that cable or spool it back in.

So as you can see, easy to turn, but this gear is moving real slow.So that can be an advantage for some instances where you don't want it to move really fast. You need to be able to adjust, or you just want to be able to really dial in where that's going to be sitting your loads. Going to be sitting. So it can be an advantage or disadvantage. It's just kind of up to your application. It does come with the wire rope and the hook with the safety latch. So whenever you hook on anything, it's not going to fall off as soon as you drop that hook. So it's nice. So you don't have to fight with this or keep tension on the wire to make sure that stays on there. The thing I will say is that this does not come installed. You will have to spill this on yourself. So that's just one little thing that when you get it out of the box, you are going to have to put that wire rope on there yourself. Also, the handle will come detached and we just have this loosely on there. It's a threaded or it's a nylock nut. So kind of ruins it if you thread it all the way down, or not ruins it, but it just will affect the nylon inside there. So we just have it loosely on there for video purposes. As far as the size, the drum can hold 25' ft of 3" x 16" inch diameter wire, and the bracket itself measures 5" x a half inches by 5" x 3" quarter inches. The handle measures 7" x 7" x 8" going from the edge to edge here. There's some slots for our mounting locations, it doesn't come with any mounting hardware, but it's a pretty standard pattern. The distance between those center to center is about 2" x 3" quarter inches, or it's about 3" x 3" quarter inches at the max, at about 2" inches at the minimum. And then the distance between the center of that and our bottom holds about 4" inches. So hopefully that gives you an idea of that pattern. Overall, it's about 7" inches from the ends of the bolts and about 7" x a half inches to the end of that gear. And then about 11" inches from the surface it's mounted to the top of that handle, whenever it's actually tightened all the way down. Something I like about this is that it does have a nice powder coating to help resist any kind of corrosion or rust. And it also has a zinc plating for that, so should be looking nice for a long time. Again, as far as the capacity, it can handle 2000 lbs and has a gear ratio of 40:1. All in all I think this is going to be a great addition for just about any kind of application you might want to have for it. The one thing you want to keep in mind, is that this is not intended to move people and you don't really want to use this in an area where people are going to be. So keep those things in mind. That's what we're just going to do it for our look at the MaxxTow MaxxHaul Worm Gear Hand Winch. I hope this video has been helpful and thanks for watching.

Ask the Experts about this MaxxTow Trailer Winch

  • Winch Option that Can be Used with Power Drill
We have winches that can have power drills attached to them to make cranking a bit easier but the MaxxTow you referenced does not have this feature. Instead you'd want something like the Dutton Lainson Worm Gear Winch # DL11004 which does have the hex drive option.

  • Are Worm Gear Winches Easy to Crank
Worm gear winches are very easy to crank like the MaxxTow MaxxHaul Worm Gear Hand Winch # MT70193 since they move slower than most winches. The flip side to that is it would take some time to crank in and out but it would be easier to move the handle.

  • Recommended Hand Winch for Garage Door
A worm gear winch like the # MT70193 wouldn't be a good choice as you'd need to crank to play out the cable and to retract it. I'd go with a plain old light duty boat trailer winch like # DL15002, which is inexpensive and manufactured in the USA. You'll also need some winch cable, part # FWC3250100. The cable would attach to the spool as shown in the diagram I provided. The 25 foot length will work just fine with your garage door. Since this isn't necessarily the application the...

  • Mounting Bolt Hole Size of MaxxTow Winch # MT70193
The bolt hole slots of the MaxxTow winch part # MT70193 that you referenced are right at 1/2 inch in diameter. There isn't a specific bolt size that's recommended for use with this but with that in mind a 1/2 inch or slightly narrower bolt would work well.
