Video Transcript for Jif Single-Speed Boat Trailer Winch Review

Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today we're going to be taking a look at, and I'm going to show you some of the cool features on this Jif Marine Trailer Winch. This is going to make it a lot easier to replace your old trailer winch for towing your boat up onto your trailer. It's going to have a sturdy carbon steel construction, with a zinc coating to help resist against that rust and corrosion, because these are going to be often introduced to water. So one thing I noticed about the handle when I first gripped it, it's going to be a plastic handle, but it's going to have like a rubberized texture to it. It's going to have these finger grips here, so you can easily get your hand on it, and it's nice and large to be able to get that torque necessary to get your boat up.It's going to have a geared system, so that you have a more controlled rate at which you're pulling the boat up, and to take some of that weight off. You're going to have forward, neutral so that you can undo your strap, and reverse, so you can do it at a controlled rate if your boat happens to be heavier.

It's going to be a nice medium size hook to be able to fit into a majority of your standard anchor points on the front of your boat. With that, it'll be attached to the end of a nylon strap. It's going to be a lot like the materials of your seat belts in your vehicles, and it's going to be plenty strong to be able to pull your boat up onto your trailer. One thing that's really cool and convenient in my personal opinion about this boat winch, that it is going to have a neutral, so you can leave it hooked up to your boat, and have a more controlled launch into the water. We'll go ahead and show you how, but we're going to pull it out. So this simulates dropping your boat into the water, but it's still attached to the hook, and then when your boat is in the water, you can just simply go to the front bow and unhook it.

Your strap is going to be 20 feet long, so you should be able to get your boat off the trailer, into the water, enough to get the hook off.One quick note just so you know what you're getting, this handle is going to be about nine inches long, so you can see here it is pretty close to the front of our boat, and to our wheel here. So just make sure that you're going to have enough space on the right side of your trailer to be able to fit this handle. You're most likely going to be replacing your old one with this new Jif Marine Which, so there's going to be just two bolts to remove the winch from your trailer, you want to clean off this area, so that your new winch can go right into place. So when you get your new winch in the box, you're going to have to take this nut off, and put the handle on, and you're going to have remove this bolt and slide the end of your strap through. Slide that bolt through the end of that strap, and tighten down this nut on the other side. Now we can go ahead and get it in place.

You can see here, line up our bottom hole there, and our top hole is actually going to be slotted to be able to fit many different factory trailers. Now we can go ahead and insert our hardware. Now your hardware will not come included in your kit, so you want to make sure you have a nut and a bolt big enough to fit tight inside the hole, if your old hardware is rusted. Here we're using a 15 millimeter bolt, now we can tighten them down. Now with all our hardware tightened down, we can start reeling our winch. I would recommend that when you're rolling this up, that you make sure the rope is going to pull from the top, so that it's not pulling from the bottom.

Then you want to hook it onto the front of your boat, and tighten it the rest of the way.Well guys, with all that being said, that's going to do it for our look and installation of our Jif Marine Trailer Winch.

  • Replacement Winch For Stripped Ratchet Gear on # 315-W2000D Winch
The Single-Speed Boat Trailer Winch with 20' Strap and Brake - 2,000 lbs # 315-W2000D is the replacement winch you would need and is a Jif Marine Winch not Dutton-Lainson. There is not replacement gear kit compatible with your winch. You may want to consider upgrading to the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2 Speed - Direct Drive - 2,500 lbs # DL14825 which has high carbon steel gears for more durability.

  • Comparing Fulton 1,500 Winch and JIM Marine Winch # 315-W2000D
Fulton makes high quality winches like the Fulton Winch # F142201 that you referenced. JIF Marine makes great winches too and the Single-Speed Boat Trailer Winch # 315-W2000D is almost an identical design except for it comes with a 20 foot cable and a strap included. Based on that I would go with the JIF.

  • Base Dimensions of Single-Speed Boat Trailer Winch part # 315-W2000D
I went out to our warehouse and measured the Single-Speed Boat Trailer Winch part # 315-W2000D for you. The dimensions of the base are as follows; 6-1/4" long x 3-3/4" wide.

  • Replacement for Shelby Boat Winch
Shelby is no longer in business and would not be the same as Fulton; there are no ratchet repair kits available for Shelby so you'll need to replace your winch. Keeping in mind that a boat trailer winch has a boat-size-to-winch capacity that is generally 2-to-1, I recommend checking out the Single-Speed Boat Trailer Winch with 20' Strap and Brake # 315-W2000D. This winch has a 2,000 lb capacity, has a self-locking crank and is zinc-plated so you do not have to worry about it getting corroded.

  • Replacement Handle for Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch DL1100A
While there is a replacement handle for your Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15103 (which is model DL1100A), the Replacement Winch Handle # DL5703657, a different handle will not give this winch a ratcheting mechanism. For that you would need to replace the winch entirely with the Single-Speed Boat Trailer Winch # 315-W1800D which has a ratcheting hand crank. This winch comes with a 20' strap and has an 1,800 lb capacity, though there are other capacities available: 2,000 lbs # 315-W2000D,...
