Rolling Load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Video Transcript for Review of Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch - Standard Hand Winch - DL58XR

Hello, neighbor, Steve here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look at our Dutton Lainson Hand Winch with a nice black powder coat and TUFFPLATE finish. It's a single-speed winch rated at 1,400 pounds. So, folks, this nice, heavy-duty, single-speed hand winch is gonna be great for horizontal pulling, such as maybe loading a boat onto a boat trailer or maneuvering bulky equipment around, and it is designed to pull objects up to 1,400 pounds. Now, it does come equipped with what's called a freewheel mode, so you simply undo the latch there, and then you can spin this forward or backwards, whichever way, and then once you flip that back up, now I can only spin one direction, usually with the handle on. (winch clicking) And it won't spin back the other way.

So, again, usually the handle's on, and then you can crank it whichever way you need to with the retaining nut on the handle. While we're talking about the handle, I'll let you know that it's eight inches long from this end to this end. The winch itself is a nice black powder coat finish, and then all the hardware that you see here is a zinc, TUFFPLATE-finished. Now, the reversible ratchet here lets you install the cable or strap on either side of the drum direction, so you don't have to worry about that. You have the hardware here to install the cable.

It does have a gear ratio of four to four to one, and the maximum drum capacity would be a 1/4 inch thick cable by 40 feet max, and the strap can be up to 31 feet long. They're gonna give you a nice five-year limited warranty. It is made here in the US, and you will need to get separately, if you don't already have 'em, the mounting hardware. It takes about three 3/8 inch bolts. You got slots so you can kinda move this around to get it in the position you need to match up your current bolt configuration.

Most people are replacing the winch, so they already have the hardware. If you don't, I recommend getting stainless steel hardware. Just go big once, especially if you're by water, the stainless steel won't corrode or anything on you, so that's my recommendation. Now, if you're pulling a rolling load, meaning something on wheels, you could potentially carry up to 14,000 pounds, per the manufacturer. As far as the boat pull capacity, if it's a trailer with wooden bunks and no self-alignment, the capacity is 1,400 pounds.

If it's a standard trailer, it's 2,800 pounds. If you have a boat trailer equipped with free-turning rollers, you could potentially pull 4,200 pounds of weight, because those rollers are helping it move and everything. Well, folks, that's gonna wrap it up. Thanks for taking the time to watch with me today. I'm Steven, have a good one.
