A common ratio for determining your winch load capacity is 2:1. For example, a 2,000-lb boat would require a 1,100-lb winch. There are extenuating factors, however, that will determine the appropriate winch size for your purposes.
The ratio can be stretched to 3:1 in instances when the trailer in use has high-quality rollers and is most commonly used on ramps where boats float most of the way onto the trailer.
In contrast, using a boat trailer that has wooden bunks, lacks self-alignment capabilities, and is most commonly used on ramps where the boat must be winched most of the way onto the trailer reduces the ratio to 1:1.
Note that pontoon trailers and other special designs require special consideration when determining winch capacity.
Percent Incline | Multiply By |
---|---|
Level Surface | 10.0 |
5 (3 degrees) | 6.67 |
10 (6 degrees) | 5.02 |
20 (11 degrees) | 3.40 |
30 (17 degrees) | 2.61 |
50 (26 degrees) | 1.86 |
70 (35 degrees) | 1.53 |
100 (45 degrees) | 1.29 |
To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the winch capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.
The multiplication factor shown includes a 10 percent rolling friction factor. Note: A 5 percent - or 3 degree - incline is a 1/2' rise in 10'. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.
All Dutton-Lainson StrongArm electric winches are built for multipurpose hauling and pulling operations. They are not to be used as hoists for lifting, supporting or transporting people, or for handling loads over areas where people could be present.

Speaker 1: Today, we're taking a look at the Dutton Lainson StrongArm electric winch. Now, this winch is built for multipurpose hauling and pulling operations. It does feature the built-in detachable handheld remote. This allows you to control the line in and line out functions from a safe distance. When we say built in, what you gotta do is just plug this unit in right here to the port that's built into the body of the winch. When it comes to the braking, we're looking at two different braking systems on this unit. We have a dynamic motor break, which helps bring the load to an immediate stop without coasting, and we have a mechanical friction brake, which locks the reel to hold the load.
The clutch lever is located right here on the side of the unit, it has two positions. You have your engaged gear position, and then you have a freewheel position and you just rotate it that direction. Move it to a freewheel mode, and that option allows the table to be removed by hand quickly and easily. This is a high-torque, 12-volt DC motor. It includes circuit breaker overload protection.
Comes with the necessary wiring harness. We're looking at the cabling that's included. This is a flexible high-strain, seven-strand by 19-gauge galvanized aircraft cable. It also has the pulley block and snap hooks included for double line pooling. This is 50 feet of cable, which is great for double line operation, and each hook has that safety latch or safety snap hook, which keeps the load securely attached. It also comes with an emergency crank handle that comes standard and it is designed for use in the event of power failure.
The area where you insert that is located right here on the side. You remove this plug to gain access to the connection point for that manual crank handle. Now, internally, the unit features heat treated gears to provide smoother, quieter operation and greater strength. We're looking at precision needle bearings in high load areas to create low friction and promote longer life. Also, it has the die-formed base.
This is adaptive for quick mounting applications. That's designed to be a universal mount and it does work in a variety of situations or for a variety of applications. The casing is a high-impact, weather-resistant case, provides excellent protection for internal components. It's also safer than open reel models. Right here on the front, we have the brushed stainless steel front plate for superior rust resistance. The product's made in the USA. When it comes to the load capacity, we're looking at about 1,500 pounds. Double Line capacity is 2,200 pounds and that rating is based on 10-foot of pull. The current draw, 70 amps at 12 volts. Electric wenches should be used intermittently, so the maximum continued runtime is . continuous run time is four minutes. For this unit, gear ratio is 189-to-one, and when it comes to your load speed and feet per minute, no load full reel is 16 feet per minute. Full load full real is 4.5 feet per minute. It's a really nice winch. Again, you got the handheld remote right here, allows you to control the in and out functions from a safe distance. You got your wiring harness, fuse protected. Really, the last thing I want to go over is just the measurements here of the unit and the base. We're going to take a look at the mounting plate. Measures around 8 3/4 inches that direction. Then side to side, this direction. It measures around 3 and . inaudible 00:03:54 say about 3 7/8 inches side to side. When it comes to the overall measurements of the unit, if we take a measurement of the overall length . I'm going to measure from the back of the unit to the front of the unit, and I'm getting a measurement of about 10 3/4 inches. The overall height, tallest point, which is right here at this point, I'm going to say that that measures about 8, maybe 8 1/4 inches tall. Then the overall width, going edge to edge . to the outer edge of this handle here. I'm going to say that's about 8 1/4 inches wide. That's going to do it for today's look at the Dutton Lainson StrongArm electric winch.
