Went online, ordered product, got confirming and shipping emails and received the winch.
Went as smooth as I would hope for.

Looks like a good heavy winch.
Want to
use it to make a winch jack.

Great Winch... Just as described. Quick shipping and great communication. Thanks!

by:

I haven't installed it yet but, it looks like a good product. The gentleman I spoke with also was great.

by:

Works great, built well! A great purcha se.

by:

I installed this on my boat to help me raise and lower a centerboard. Works great

by:

Even though it is more winch than I reallyneeded, I can highly recommend this unit. In the application I am using them, they needed to be mounted to a wall to raise and lower some heavy lighting units so the worm gear really makes that convenient. As over-built as this is they should last for many years.

I can also highly recommend the people at etrailer.com. The product was shipped the next day (I placed the order late at night) and they have been very helpful in keeping me informed on the arrival of the units that were backordered. Thanks guys!

Have one on my maple evaporator hood to lift up to clean. These are for hanging pole so we will see as seasons open. They work great!

by:

I haven't actually used this winch, but it looks like it is as advertised. It is much bigger though than I originally thought. It looks like the measurements are correct on the page, but it is much more imposing than I had anticipated. Overall though, it looks like a solid winch.

by:

The product was exactly what I expected! The shipped was very fast and the tracking ability helped.

by:

Good price.great product.fast shipping.excellent packaging..worked great for application..

by:

exact replacement for sailboat centerboard winch thanks !

by:

excellent productI bought this worm gear winch to use on a ham radio crank-up tower. It works great using only two fingers. I would reccommend this winch to anyone . It is well built and works great under a load with only two fingers!Well worth the money.

by:

Manual hoist was perfect for my intended use. I assembled a lift for my full-sized fiberglass pickup bed cap (abt 300 lbs). Very well built unit...lifted cap with no effort utilizing 30:1 ratio. Price was good considering alternatives. The best part of the etrailer experience was the customer service. Amazon could learn a thing or two. Absolutely outstanding communication and product knowledge. I even asked it there were any discounts and they gave me 5% off. Product was well packaged and arrived within 3 business days. I'll definitely shop etrailer again.

by:

The product is in great condition and etrailer.com sent it faster at no cost. Great service and thank you for a great product.

by:

Perfect winch for replacing the keel winch on our small sailboat. Excellent service from etrailer.

by:

I got the hand winch today and it looks great.
It will do the job perfectly
Thanks again "etrailer"

The application for the winch is one that required the handle on the top of the winch to keep from having interferrence with the cranking handle. The gear ratio is quite different in that it takes more cranks of the handle to make a full revolution of the spool but with a tip from the manufacturer to use a 1/2" drill instead of the handle it makes set up time much faster and easier.

I ended up purchasing two of these Dutton's. I have a smaller Alumucraft Boat so I used these two winches to raise my boat out of the water at my dock. It was by far cheaper than a sling lift kit. Unfortunately I have very shallow water at winter pool and this worked perfect to get the boat up out of the water. Great Service, Great Product, easy to use, what else can I say.

by:

A rock-solid piece of kit. I called Dutton-Lainson and they helped me understand the set-up process. It is now mounted on Yakima racks on the top of my truck cap and will be used for single-handed stepping and unstepping the mast of a sailboat. It is slow, but very steady. Pleased as punch.

Picked up this winch to use primarily for camper shell storage in the garage. Maybe lift other lighter items as needed. I went for the worm drive for its controlled release and hold ability. The winch fit the bill perfectly. My only minor gripe is that the site doesn't mention that a cable fastener isn't needed (such as DL 24361) and if I remember correctly there aren't instructions in the box on how to affix the cable. There is a handy how to vid on this site but took a few minutes of digging to find.

I purchased this winch for a lifting system for my 8’ fiberglass pickup truck canopy. The worm drive winch was easy to install and I used 1/8 inch steel cable to rig the lift system for the canopy. My canopy weighs just over 200 LBS and it is very easy to load and install the canopy on my truck. The winch is designed for cable and the best feature is that when you release the handle of the winch it stays exactly where its at. It’s a great winch and I would recommend it for any items in it’s weight range.

  • Comparing Dutton-Lainson Brake vs Worm Drive Hand Winches
The main benefit of a worm gear winch like the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL10970 over a brake winch like the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL74FR is that worm gear winches don't have a minimum load requirement. If you're consistently over the minimum load requirement then I recommend using a brake hand winch as it will be faster.

  • If Handle of Worm Gear Winch is Let Go Does Winch Handle Move
Worm gear winches by design are brake winches so if you let go of the handle it hold the weight in the exact position. Since it's a screw that rides on a gear the release of the handle does not force the handle to move and it actually locks it in place. The lowest rated version of a worm gear winch is the part # DL10954 which has a 1,500 lb capacity and is already setup to be a ceiling hoist like you are wanting as well. I attached a review video for this for you to check out as well.

  • Is a Strap Reel Available for Dutton-Lainson Model WG2000 Winch?
I took a look at each of the parts we carry for Dutton-Lainson winches such as your # DL10970 and went on to search elsewhere and unfortunately I could not find a reference to that part anywhere, nor was I able to locate a strap that is recommended to be used with that winch. That winch is designed to be used with cables and I recommend instead of modifying that winch you instead get one designed for use with a strap such as the Dutton-Lainson # DL11002.

  • Is the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL10970 Salt Water Resistant for Marine Applications
The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL10970, is made of laminated steel gears and a steel base, which is powder coated for some protection, but it is susceptible to the elements and corrosion. Instead, a better option would be the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch, # DL14730. This winch has a Zinc plated yellow chromate TUFFPLATE finish has three times the corrosion resistance of standard zinc plated trivalent chrome process and 30 percent greater corrosion resistance when compared to...

  • Recommendation for a Worm Gear, Brake or Trailer Winch for a Mushroom Harvesting Trolley
There are a few things to determine before we can make a recommendation that will work well for your Mushroom Harvesting Trolley. First, how do you want to control the load that you are using the winch for? A trailer winch controls the load as it is being pulled in, but free spools out. A hand brake winch, like the one you referenced, controls the load coming in and when in free spool the load can be controlled by manipulating the hand brake. A brake winch, or worm gear winch controls...

  • Can the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL10970 be Used with a Strap
The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL10970, is designed for a cable no wider than 9/32 inches. If you had a strap that narrow, it could work, but the winch is not really designed for that application. A comparable winch that is rated for use with a strap is the Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch, # DL14725. This winch has a drum capacity that can handle a strap 38 feet in length.

  • Can The DL10970 Hand Winch be Used to Secure the Load to the Trailer
The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear winch is designed to only turn when the handle is turned. That being said, it is NOT designed to hold a load on a trailer. If you use the winch to pull a car on a trailer, the car should then be strapped to the trailer before transporting it. I would also disconnect the winch as to not keep tension on the cable when the car may bounce on the trailer as it is transported.

  • Will Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10970 Work to Hoist Fishing Kayak
The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10970 that you referenced is a great solution for helping to unload your 200 pound fishing kayak and suspend it in the air. The winch features a 2,000 pound weight capacity and can be used with winch cable like # DL24104. Worm gear winches like this one work really well for hoisting objects since they don't have a free wheel option and the load can't reverse the direction of the winch. I have attached a short video demonstration on this winch that you...
