Video Transcript for Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch - Brake Hand Winch - DL14881 Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to take a look at the Dutton Lainson Two Speed Hand Winch with the handbrake, tough plate finish and a 3500 pound weight capacity. Now, this is a heavy duty winch. It's designed for horizontal pulling, so it's ideal for boat trailers, other pulling applications. This winch happens to include this handbrake for manually controlling the load release, which is perfect for boat trailers with a heavy boat or a steep ramp. The handle to crank the drum is a ratcheting handle. You can hear it ratcheting, has a nice ergonomic grip on it to hold onto the handle. This is a quick attach handle, which means you can easily change from the high speed to the low speed for heavier loads. inaudible 00:00:40 is by pushing in on the spring loaded handle clip, removes it, push it into install it and it'll slide right on and lock into place.

Again, if you need to move it back, push it on the handle clip just like that. Slides off, slide it back on and it'll lock into place. It's very quick to remove from one gear to the other. They do use high carbon steel heat treated gears, and it has the zinc tough plate finish on the winch. The tough plate finish has about three times the corrosion resistance of a standard zinc plating, and about 30% greater corrosion resistance when compared to powder coating. On the hub drum itself, does use permanently lubricated bearings on the shaft.

This one does happen to have a reversible ratchet plunger, right back here you can see. This can be switched to allow the cable to wind off of either the top or the bottom of the reel.Basically what that means is I'll show you here. When you ratchet, it's going clockwise. You can see if you pull up on this plunger, turn it 180 degrees and release it, it'll change into going counterclockwise. Then if you pull up on it, only go 90 degrees and keep it like that, it'll give you the free wheel position.

That's when you use your handbrake. The handbrake, when it's in the free wheel, inaudible 00:01:55 controlling the load release and then once you release it back into gear. This part is made in the USA. A few specs on this, the gear ratios, they would be for the high speed and the low speed. Right now, it's on the top shaft, which is the high speed. It's a six to one gear ratio.

What that means is for six revolutions of the handle will give you one revolution of the drum. If you move it to the lower shaft, which is the low speed, that's a 12 to one gear ratio, which means 12.1 revolutions of the handle for one revolution of the drum. Now, the drum hub diameter right in here is one and 5/16th of an inch. Maximum drum capacity, now this winch is for cable only. You can use either a 3/8th inch diameter cable, 37 feet long will work, and 7/32nd diameter cable and 106 feet long will fit in here. This does come with a cable keeper. If I turn it to this way, you can see this part right here that I've attached. It's a nut and a bolt with a cable keeper on it. What that is for is when you go to attach your cable to this, you run this through here, put it under that, tighten it down and that'll hold it into place as you start to install your cable onto your drum.Capacity on this again is 3,500 pounds. Handle length, center to center, is nine and a half inches. The base dimension, measure the overall base length from this end to this end, and that's going to be right at eight and a half inches long. Overall width right at five and 5/8th inches wide. You can see on the bottom of the base has multiple mounting holes to fit your application.Again, just to go over a few features on this. We're going to go ahead and reverse it this way, so you can see we crank it clockwise. If we pull it up, go 180 degrees, that'll change it to counterclockwise. Then, the quick change handle, just push in on that spring loaded handle, put it on, take it off, slide it right on. Simple as that. Then, your handbrake, when you go into the free wheel position, you just hold down on the handbrake and release it as you need. It gives you control hold release. That should do it for the review on the Dutton Lainson Two Speed Hand Winch with the handbrake, tough plate finish and a 3500 pound weight capacity.

I bought this winch to mount in an enclosed trailer for vehicle recovery. I didnt want an electric winch because I knew it would not be used frequently and didnt want to deal with a battery. I was skeptical about the pullung power it would provide. In use however, I was able to drag with ease, a 2500 pound vehicle into the trailer with one of the vehicles wheels locked up. In low gear the winch is slow, but dang it will pull. So that the winch could be removed easily, I mounted it to a skid that is anchored to the front two tie downs in my trailer. This way when not needed it can be stored in the front of the trailer, or removed entirely. The best part, no batteries. Also, nothing to go bad from sitting idle for a while. 562809

I have not used the winch yet, but bought it to replace a Fulton 3700. The new winch is built much better than the Fulton winch. The gear switch is a plunger style that goes up and down when you crank the handle. Seems to be more sturdy, than the flip handle that the Fulton has. This product is made in America and it shows. The Fulton is not made in America and you can tell. I am very impressed with the owners manual that covers every aspect of installing and using the winch safely. I suggest viewing the video on this site and you will see what an impressive winch they make. 220771

Ask the Experts about this Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Winch?

  • Recommended Electric and Manual Winch for Car Trailer
  • Most Car trailers will utilize the electric winches that have much more power and strength. For a hand winch, I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch, TUFFPLATE Finish, Two Speed with Direct Drive - Hand Brake - 3,500 lbs. # DL14881. This will only give you that max capacity of the winch on the single layer of cable around the drum and it will be a lower capacity with each additional layer of cable. I recommend the Fulton Galvanized Winch Cable with Hook - 50' x 7/32" - 5,600 lbs...

  • Boat Winch Recommendation for a 4,500 lb Boat
  • When it comes to choosing a winch for a boat trailer, there are a few general rules we can use. The boat-size-to-winch capacity is generally 2 to 1. With good rollers and short winching distances, the ration can increase to 3 to 1 and with wooden bunks and long winching distances, you will want to reduce the capacity to 1 to 1. So basically, you will want to look at the type and condition of the bunks on your trailer to choose the best winch. The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch, # DL14825,...

  • Availability of 2-Speed Winch Compatible with 50' of Cable
  • The Fulton High-Performance 2-Speed Trailer Winch # F142412 that you referenced can take a max of 24' x 7/16" rope. Since you are needing 50' for cable I recommend going with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14881 which is rated for up to 3,500 lbs and is compatible with up to 37' for 3/8" cable or 106' for 7/32" cable. If you can get by with a 2,000 lb winch then the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14730 is another option as it can take up to 58' of 9/32" cable.

  • How Do I Select a Hand Winch for My 8,000 pound Boat Trailer
  • Finding the right capacity winch for your boat trailer is fairly simple but you have factors that must be taken into consideration. Boat-size-to-winch capacity is generally 2 to 1. With good rollers and short winching distances, you could increase the ratio to 3 to 1. With wooden bunks and long winching distances, reduce the ratio to 1 to 1. Special consideration should be given to pontoon boats and other boats with special hull designs. By my calculations the Dutton-Lainson Hand...

  • Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch, TUFFPLATE Finish, Two Speed with Direct Drive - Hand Brake - 3,500 lbs. The similarly rated Fulton F2 # FW32000101 comes with a strap. It is rated for 3,200 pounds but is not a brake winch. • The Duttton-Lainson Brake Winch you referenced, part # DL14881, would be a great choice for raising and lowering a 400 lb radio tower. The winch has plenty of capacity for that weight, and the integral brake will engage as soon as the handle is released, preventing the winch from freewheeling while lowering the tower. The load will raise or lower by turning the winch handle in the appropriate direction, with no need to engage or disengage a lever. The winch cable is sold separately....

  • On the Dutton-Lainson winch # DL14881, the maximum drum capacity for a cable is 3/8 inches in diameter and 37 feet long. I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson and he said that you could use a synthetic cable as long as it is rated high enough. The cable you use has to be rated 1-1/2 times higher than the winch capacity. In this case that is 5,250 pounds. If the cable has a hook at the end that hook must be rated 1-1/2 times greater than the cable. So that would be 7,875 pounds. I...

  • Mounting Post Recommendation for Winching Boat Trailer Out of Water
  • When determining the mounting height for installing a winch you want to choose a height that will allow the winch to pull as level as possible relative to the ground it's used on. You will also want to choose a post that will have enough capacity for the amount of weight you will be winching. A tree or stump is not a recommended place to mount a winch. Normally in these situations, people mount the winch on a steel post that is held in the ground with concrete in order to support the weight.

I recommend the Fulton Galvanized Winch Cable with Hook - 50' x 7/32" - 5,600 lbs # FWC7500100 for your application. The # DL24844 winch is a single speed and has a drum hub diameter of 3-1/8 inches. Because of the lower gear ratios # DL14881 offers, the load would be able to be drawn in quicker than with the gear ratio of # DL24844.
