Video Transcript for Feature Breakdown: Fastway Universal Coupler Lock for 1-7/8", 2" and 2-5/16" Couplers

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Fastway Universal Coupler Lock. The universal design is going to protect most trailers from being towed away, so it's designed to provide maximum security for your unattended trailer. That's going to protect it from theft. It's going to use a multi-step uniball that fits into any size ball coupler. Now this piece is a solid construction. It's not hollow like similar designs and models, and the shackle has a really nice unique bend.

This is a reversible design that allows it to snug up tight to most type of couplers or coupler latches including all the ones that you see here on the table such as A frame, straight channel, round tunnel, flat plate and surge type couplers. It's also going to accommodate a variety of latching mechanisms such as trigger, pin, thumb and wrap around yoke latches. It works great on all the ones that you see here on the table, a really nice universal design that's going to provide maximum security to your unattended trailer. The unit features a tube key lock cylinder that provides better security than standard key mechanisms. It's a lot harder to pick, and it's more difficult to duplicate keys. It's also going to feature an anti-drill pin that discourages attempts to drill out the lock.

The unit is also going to feature a bolt-blocked locking system to prevent thieves from prying the lock open. Inside this hole right there there's going to be a small bolt that engages the shackle. Right now it would be in the unlock position, and you can see how that comes out just a little bit. It doesn't take much to secure the unit, but that bolt that runs through there engages the grooves on the shackle to keep it from being pried off of the trailer coupler. Now when it comes to the construction we're looking at hardened steel construction. When it comes to the shackle it's going to provide maximum cut resistance, chrome-plated finish, does a great job at resisting rust and corrosion.

Then we're looking at a solid die-cast, corrosion resistant housing that's very strong and very durable. Two keys are included per lock, they are numbered. The keys are going to be unique to the universal lock that you choose. This is going to fit 1 7/8 inch, 2 inch and 2 5/16 inch ball couplers. You just need to make sure that the coupler width does not exceed 4 1/2 inches, the shackle diameter is a 5/8 of an inch and the unit is going to be covered with a limited lifetime warranty. I want to show you how it installs and how easy it is to use.

What you'll need to do is separate the 2 components, so just move it to the unlock position. It also has a nice dust cap that protects that lock opening. It's going to do a great job at keeping out dirt and moisture. When you're ready to use it, all you need to do is make sure that the coupler is in the open position. The ball portion goes in there. Then all you got to do is secure it just as if you're hooking up to your hitch ball and then install the shackle. You need to determine which way is going to work best for your application. For this one I want to make sure that the point is pointing back towards the trailer. It is a universal design, that way you can adjust it however you need to use the lock to fit your application the best. Then we move it to an unlock position, allow that shackle to go down as far as possible. Move the key to the lock position, and it removes from the core. Place it over the dust cap, and that's on there. It's not going to come off. The only way to get it off is to use one of the 2 keys to unlock the unit. That's going to do it for today's look at the Fast Way Universal Coupler lock.

  • Can I Use 5/8" Pins Instead Of Bolts For The Demco Trailer Coupler DM14040-81
Hello Lee, that is a good question. We do not recommend using 5/8" pins to hold the Demco # DM14040-81 coupler into the channel. The manufacturer specifies that grade 5 mounting bolts must be used in order to achieve the full 21,000 lb weight capacity. Using pins instead of bolts will reduce the weight rating to an unknown amount, and you will risk equipment failure. Even though you will only be towing around 10K I cannot in good conscience recommend using pins instead of bolts. For added...

  • Can Fastway Universal Coupler Locks Be Keyed the Same
I confirmed with Fastway that yes, if you order multiple of these coupler locks with the same key code, they will be keyed the same. For example the Fastway Universal Coupler Lock # FA86-0015-306 uses Key 306 while the Fastway Universal Coupler Lock # FA86-0015-312 uses Key 312. As long as your ordering multiple coupler locks using the same numbered key you will be fine. I have have also included a review video for additional information on the coupler lock.
