The NitroFill inflation process filters out oxygen to ensure that this tire-and-wheel assembly is filled with 95 to 99.9 percent pure nitrogen. Nitrogen-inflated tires maintain pressure better than tires inflated with standard air. This makes them ideal for RVs and trailers that are driven infrequently or sit in storage for long periods of time. Other benefits of consistent tire pressure are better fuel economy, improved braking and handling, decreased chance of tire failure, and longer tire life.

A tire inflated with standard air, which contains oxygen, is prone to fluctuations in pressure due to loss of air over time and ambient temperature changes. Nitrogen-inflated tires don't experience these fluctuations for a couple reasons. First, nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, so they are less likely to permeate a rubber tire. Second, nitrogen is a dry gas, so it won't allow condensation to build inside the tire. A tire inflated with standard air may have moisture in it, which means it is more likely to be affected by ambient temperature.

In addition, the moisture that can collect in a tire inflated with standard air will contribute to corrosion of the wheel and deterioration of the rubber tire from the inside out. A nitrogen-inflated tire-and-wheel assembly is less likely to experience this type of decay. Less moisture in the tire also means reduced running temperatures.

If necessary, you can top off the tire with standard compressed air. But to maintain the benefits of nitrogen, the tire must be refilled with nitrogen.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Hi there, heavy haulers. Today we're going to be taking a look at Westlake's Radial Trailer Tires with Silver Rim Assembly. These are available in two different sizes; either 235/85/16 or 235/80/16. The 85/16s are going to have a load rate of G and the 80 is going to have a load rating of E. Our G rated tires have 14 plies with a maximum load of 4,080 pounds at 110 PSI. These are the ones we've currently got installed.

The E rated tires have a 10 ply rating with a maximum load of 3,520 pounds at 80 PSI. With our G load rated tires, we'll have 13/32 of tread and with the E load rated tires you'll get 10/32 of tread. So with the G rating you're going to get a little bit more meat.Another thing I wanted to point out while we're looking at the tread here, is you see the small little raised section between the treads here and then you'll see there's nothing there. These are your wear bars. If your tire wears down to where the tread is gone and you've hit that small bar there, that is an indication that your tire needs to be replaced.You'll want to make sure you choose the one that best matches your trailer.

Typically, the tire size that you had on it before and the same load rating is usually what you're going to want to replace it with unless you have upgraded your trailer to withstand more weight. Regardless of which tire size you get, they're both going to have 16 inch rims with an eight on six and a half bolt pattern. And they'll both feature a steel, silver powder coated wheel, which will help protect it against rust and corrosion.If we take a look at our valve stem here, it is a solid all metal, high pressure valve stem and you'll notice the cap on the end here is green, which indicates that they are filled with nitrogen. Nitrogen is more stable than typical air that you put in here. Regular air does contain a large percentage of nitrogen, but since there are other gases mixed in, as temperatures change there's more fluctuation in the pressure inside the tire.

Keeping it purely nitrogen minimizes the amount of fluctuation with temperature changes resulting in more consistent tire pressure.Now just because they come prefilled with nitrogen doesn't mean that you have to fill it with nitrogen. You could just add regular air to it. If you do add regular air you are going to lose some of the benefits as you are going to be introducing more gases to it. But the fluctuation is pretty minimal in comparison and you are going to have more fluctuation with air but it's really not that big of a deal as long as you're checking your tires frequently, which you should be. If you are adamant about making sure that it stays 100% pure nitrogen, a lot of your repair shops around the area, especially your automotive manufacturers, carry nitrogen there and you can get them to fill it up.

There is sometimes a fee involved with that.Regardless of which size tire you get, they're both going to have an L speed rating which gives you a maximum of 75 miles per hour and they're all going to come with a two year roadside assistance from the manufacturer. One of the things I wanted to point out on our lug stud holes on our rim here, is that they are beveled, which helps center the tire onto your hub, which just makes it rotate in a better circular motion. If it wasn't centered, you can get some vibrations from it which could prematurely wear the tire, potentially cause damage to other components depending on how bad the vibration is. This is also an eight on six and a half bolt pattern, so you want to keep that in mind.Now before we install our new tires, I wanted to give you a look at the old ones to show why we're going to be replacing them. You'll see here that our tread pattern, we've got wear on the inside edge here and this is typically caused by a camber issue, so you could have issues with your wheel bearings or a bent axle that can cause that. This tire over here has a much more even wear across it, which is what you want to see. But if you notice here we've got a spot particularly in this section that is worn. This is typically an indication either that the trailer has sat for a long time which has made this flat so every time it goes around it doesn't wear properly in this section because it's not round. It could also be by a imbalance in the tire because if this is heavier than other parts of the tire when it comes down, it comes down with more force. So it wears this section even more.If you do have this, these are signs that you may have other issues that you'll want to repair when you put your tires on because you don't want to just put new tires on and end up with the same wear pattern that is prematurely going to ruin those new tires. I don't have one as an example here, but another reason you might want one is because maybe you had a blowout. And since this is a tire and rim assembly, it's got everything you need to just pop it on. And when you have a blowout, depending on how long you drove on that tire that had a blowout, you could have potentially damaged the rim to where it no longer seals on the bead or it is misshapen to where it's going to cause excessive vibration. Getting a whole new rim and tire is going to remedy that whole situation.We've gone ahead and addressed all the issues that we've got with our trailer's suspension and axles and everything, so we're ready to put our new tires on. We're going to go ahead and put our jack underneath and that's how we're going to be lifting it up to do so. Now with your axles, it is important that you don't jack underneath the axle, particularly in the center. If you are going to jack under the axle, you want to make sure you're doing it where your suspension is. Maybe you got a leaf spring pack underneath, you want to put it underneath those leaf springs.We've got a bracket that goes around our axle and you can see it here. I'm going to be putting the jack up and hooking it right on that so that way we don't bend our axle because these axles aren't like the axle that's in the back of your truck. You have a differential back there and that axle is significantly more robust on the housing because it is a drive axle. This is not a drive axle, these just are meant to be pulled. They just really are axles and bearings. Now that we've got an appropriate spot where we can lift it, we just really need to get it up off the ground. We're not going to lift it too high.I do want to also point out if you look over at the opposite side, you can see that I've chocked the tire. You want to make sure you chock the opposite side of your trailer as well. If you chock this side it might not do you any good because when you lift up, we have multiple axles here, we lift up on this tire, our rear axle is probably slightly coming off the ground as well. That's why we chocked the opposite side. Once you've got it jacked up, you always want to make sure you put a jack stand underneath the frame to support it in the event of a failure on your jack.Now that we're off the ground, we can take our socket and remove the tire. The size socket you need is probably going to vary depending on your trailer. On ours we're going to be using a 7/8 inch socket and we're just going to remove all of these. When removing the lug nuts, there is no particular order that you need to do it in, so we're just going to go around and take them all off. If you do not have a gun like we have here, or an air powered impact and you're doing this all by hand, then before you jack your tire up, you'll want to just hit all of these nuts with your hand tool. Just maybe a half a turn, just to break them loose because once you get it up off the ground, the tire's going to want to spin and it's going to be hard to do it with regular hand tools.That's our last lug nut removed. We're just going to set these aside as we are going to be reusing them. We'll then slide our tire off and just roll it off out of our way. Now that we're ready to put it on, just rolled the tire over here to get it set up. And depending on how heavy it is, one of the things you can do is put a pry bar underneath of it to lift it up. This one here is really not too heavy, so I could just lift it up. Another thing that I'll commonly do if it's really heavy and I don't have a pry bar, I'll just roll the tire up on my knee and that gives me the little boost that I need to get it up onto the hub. Now again, this one's not very heavy so you could do it by just lifting it.Now we're just going to reinstall our lug nuts. When you go to tighten them down, you want to make sure you tighten them down in a crisscross pattern. If it's a five lug set up, they call it a star pattern, but since we've got eight here, we're going to be doing essentially a plus, rotate and then another plus. And the reason we want to tighten it in this plus pattern is so that way it draws it down evenly and we don't have our rim assembly cocked onto the hub. If you saw, it's a cross there and then we just rotate and cross again.Now we can remove our jack stands and then lower it down. We can then repeat that same procedure for any remaining tires that you have, whether you just have one on the other side or you have maybe a double or triple axle. We've now completed installing all the wheels and tires on our trailer and this is where we want to torque them all down. We want it back on the ground so that way our trailer doesn't want to rotate and the wheel doesn't want to move when we're trying to torque it. You'll then want to torque it to your trailer manufacturer specifications.And that completes our look at Westlake's Radial Trailer Tires with Silver Rim Assembly.

Just installed these so treadlife is not known but they look good. Bigger than anticipated, huge compared to the 4.80/ 12 they replaced. Had to modify fenders and just hoping to have enough clearance. Installed on single jet ski trailer made by Comfab.

Roughly 3,000 miles driven on these tires and wheels with no issues and no visible tread wear a great product in my opinion would recommend to anyone
