The Nitrogen Advantage

Nitro Fill Logo

The NitroFill inflation process filters out oxygen to ensure that this tire-and-wheel assembly is filled with 95 to 99.9 percent pure nitrogen. Nitrogen-inflated tires maintain pressure better than tires inflated with standard air. This makes them ideal for RVs and trailers that are driven infrequently or sit in storage for long periods of time. Other benefits of consistent tire pressure are better fuel economy, improved braking and handling, decreased chance of tire failure, and longer tire life.

A tire inflated with standard air, which contains oxygen, is prone to fluctuations in pressure due to loss of air over time and ambient temperature changes. Nitrogen-inflated tires don't experience these fluctuations for a couple reasons. First, nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, so they are less likely to permeate a rubber tire. Second, nitrogen is a dry gas, so it won't allow condensation to build inside the tire. A tire inflated with standard air may have moisture in it, which means it is more likely to be affected by ambient temperature.

In addition, the moisture that can collect in a tire inflated with standard air will contribute to corrosion of the wheel and deterioration of the rubber tire from the inside out. A nitrogen-inflated tire-and-wheel assembly is less likely to experience this type of decay. Less moisture in the tire also means reduced running temperatures.

If necessary, you can top off the tire with standard compressed air. But to maintain the benefits of nitrogen, the tire must be refilled with nitrogen.

Hub-Piloted Wheel

This wheel is hub piloted, which means that it centers on the hub, not the lugs. The wheel requires the use of flange nuts (sold separately) for installation.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Westlake Tires and Wheels - Tire with Wheel - LHAS210 Review

Today we're going to look at the Westlake 215 75R17.5 radial tire in a load range H. On this 17 1/2 silver solid center wheel. With 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern. This tire wheel assembly is ideal for trucks, buses, and trailers. The tire to use on this is a Westlake radial tire. It's constructed with double steel belts, double polyester ply's for a nice long life. It is a radial ply tire which is great for highway use.

This large of tire they actually stamp it re-groovable on the tire. Basically that means it's, can be re-grooved for additional mileage but you do want to check with your local laws because federal and state laws could apply for re-grooving tires. This tire is also, or this assembly is nitrogen filled. You can notice it has the green valve cap which indicates that. Nitrogen will help maintain tire pressure longer than standard air. It will help prolong the life of the tire and even the wheel. The wheel is a sturdy steel wheel.

Has a solid center design. They do use a silver powder coat finish over e-coat primer over the front and even the back of the wheel. This helps resist rust. This wheel is hub piloted wheel. Which means it requires the use of flange nuts when attaching this to your axle.

Those we do sell separately on our website and they are usually listed on this product page as a related product. But basically hub pilot means it will center on this hub and then your studs will come through. Basically what you'll notice is, . and the reason you can tell this is a hub piloted wheel, if you look where the lug holes are, there's no bevel or taper to the holes. They do use the flange nut. This tire wheel assembly does have complimentary road side assistance for 2 years.

Has flat tire service available 24 hours, 7 days a week, anywhere in the US, Canada, or Puerto Rico. This assembly does meet the D.O.T. or Department of Transportation specifications. The tire does meet the federal motor vehicle safety standards and the wheel does meet the SAE J1204 standards. A few specs on this, starting with the wheel. The diameter on this wheel, which is always measured inside to inside, is going to be 17 1/2 inches. The width on just the wheel is 6 3/4 inches. The wheel does have a bolt pattern of 8 on 6 1/2 inches. The measurable pattern on a wheel like this that's an even number of lugs all you have to do is pick one hole, measure from the center of that hole directly across to the center of the hole right across from it. On this wheel it would measure 6 1/2 inches. 8 lugs, 6 1/2 inch wheel. As I mentioned it does use the lug nut size of 5/8 by 18 flange nut. The weight capacity on just the wheel by itself is 6,005 pounds. The pilot hole diameter, which is the large hole here on the center wheel goes over the hub on your trailer, diameter of that opening is 4.76 inches. This wheel does have a slight positive offset which is .31 inches. Basically the offset is usually where this, . the back of the wheel is, the mounting surface, is in relation to the center-line of the wheel. Positive means that center, that mounting surface will move to the front of the wheel, which will pull the wheel and tire closer to the vehicles. So this does have a positive .31 inch offset. The tire size on this, which will be stamped on the sidewall, is 215 75R175. The R means that it is a radial designed tire. Section width is 8.3 inches. Overall diameter from the very bottom to the top when this is inflated is 30.2. This tire is a load range H, which means it's a 16 ply rated tire. Does have a maximum load capacity of 4,805 pounds at 123 psi. One last thing I do want to mention is most all your new trailer type tires are going to have a speed rating on them. The speed rating is always designated by a letter. Where that is, is if you look right after the size we went over, there's two numbers which is the load index and then you'll see a letter J. Speed rating J means that it has a 62 mile per hour speed limit. But that should do it for the review on the Westlake 215 75R17.5 radial tire in a load range H. On a 17 1/2 inch silver solid centered wheel. With the 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern.

  • Explanation of Trailer Tire/Wheel Offset
Most of the trailer tires will have what is called a zero offset. That means that the direct center of the wheel and tire is measured to where the wheel mounts to the hub face. If you remove your tire and wheel and measure from the back edge of your tire to that hub mount/back side of the center bolt plate on your wheel and do the same from the front of the tire to that back side of the bolt plate on your wheel they should be equal which is a zero offset. A positive offset would...
