Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Don't buy these tires. I purchased these as a cheap tire to put on a boat trailer that I rarely use. The tires arrived extremely warped and distorted. It was impossible to get the bead to seat on the rim. I tried using a big air compressor, I tried using a strap around the tires, I tried using the explosive method, I tried using the cheater tank, I took them to professional tire shops. I ended up having to put inner tubes inside these tubeless tires just to get them to seat on the bead. I would have been much better ahead to have not incured the $40 cost of the intertubes, and also not have incurred the hours of frustration and running around to tire shops. Don't buy these tires, it's false economy. Spend more money and get a premium quality tire. I'm very happy with E-trailer. I'm just not happy with these tires.

I have a full set of bias ply tires on my Road King torsion axle trailer (2 axles - 4 wheels). As I have not bought this brand before let's wait and see until I have a couple of thousand miles on them before fully signing off on an opinion. For the time being I'll give them a "GOOD".

These tires with rim came in on time and un-damaged. They fit my trailer and are still in use today. I like the ease of ordering on line and had no hiccups. When ready to buy tires for my trailer again I will certainly buy them from etrailer.com

As tires go it will take some time to provide a full review. I put these on my 19ft toy hauler. Price was excellent and they arrived way before I expected. Each tire was individually boxed. I really liked that ! No big problems with balancing. I got the bias ply because the tires see some off road use . I had been warned that buying tires online for bargain pricing will get you old tires that had been shelved for a few years. NOT SO WITH THESE ! Tires are new and protected by the packaging. So far so good. Dave

Very pleased with this transaction. Sara D at e-trailer helped me decide on the tires that I needed and took the order. The four tires were delivered three days later. They were individually boxed and arrived in excellent shape. They are now mounted on my trailer and ready to go.

Review from a similar TM Bias Ply in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I have had these tires on a P/U camper for a year now and I am very satisfied. I have pulled it to Co. from Tx. and have had now issues with them. I like the fact that they are rated at 81MPH and can be pulled safely at 70 to 75 MPH. When purchasing tires it is important that you find a tire to that will preform. You can find tires in this size cheaper at big box stores but you will not have the peace of mind you have with this tire from etrailer. This is the second set of tires that I purchased from etrailer in this load range and speed range. I use my P/U camper a lot. I will continue to purchase from etrailer. I have had no problems with delivery or costumer service. They say what they do and do what they say.

Comments
This tire has performed as advertised. Great tire!! When it comes time to replace I will be using the same tire from etrailer. Customer service is the best. Thank you etrailer. P.S. if you use this tire keep the recommended air pressure 90Psi.

Review from a similar TM Bias Ply in Trailer Tires and Wheels

These tires have been great. I ordered them for a light weight trailer that I purchased and modified to carry my kayak. I belong to a kayaking group and we go all over Florida to kayak and being able to pull my kayak versus carrying it on the top of my car has been a body ache saver. I would highly recommend getting these tires.

I haven’t even opened the box yet. But let me tell you WHY I purchased these tires. I’ve had two blowouts on my golf cart trailer. Yes, I run it fast. Usually around 70-75 mph. And these tires are rated at over 81 mph! I’ve got to give them a try.

Comments
Great after 1 Year. Actually, I’ve not given much thought to my trailer tires since I put these on! I guess that says it all.

Review from a similar TM Bias Ply in Trailer Tires and Wheels

They are alright in my book. They held up to decently high loads and they have good treadware. I put 40,000 miles on them and only had 2 flats dude to nails. Still have yet to ware one out all the way. They only thing I would like better is on one of my tires had some belting show before I even put it on. It was molded far offcenter and inside the tread valley you could see the nylon

Review from a similar TM Bias Ply in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Overall I am happy with my purchase of these tires. I wanted the higher highway speed rating (M 81 mph) and that is what I got. I rate my satisfaction at 85%. Happy with cost. Happy with quicknest of filling my order and arrival time of the tires. A little less than 100% happy because the tires are already a year old (DOT 2619). That's one less year that the comfort zone of a six year tire. I understand LIFO and I can live with it.

Review from a similar TM Bias Ply in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Quick and simple ordering process; I chose free shipping, thinking I'd get this pair of tires in 2 weeks, but they arrived in 6 days and it was easy to check their progress from halfway across the country. As for the tires: these are an exact match for those that came with my dual axle trailer, which we are using for timber and milling work in the Midwest--some 1500 miles away, so these bias ply tires have seen a load of interstate miles--currently 22,000-- as well as off-road timber work, and they have held up well. My trailer manufacturer has moved to radial tires (supposedly better for the highway), but I was pleased to find these priced right at etrailer. Class operation; will order from them again.

Comments
No problems this set is right at 18,000 miles about 98 highway and interstate use back and forth to Midwest and twice to East Coast. Should replace the original pair on the other axle which are getting smooth. Will do that at etrailer, of course. Thanks.

Review from a similar TM Bias Ply in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Seems like a good product. Came way over packaged but arrived in good shape. I gave 4 stars because its hard to rate something that I haven't had time to truly test out. In 3 to 5 years I can give a full honest review of the tires. Until then u can only give 4 stars.

  • 15 inch Trailer Tire Recommendation for 3500 lb Axle Hauling Tractors and Implements
Bias ply tires do better for agricultural applications like what you have. The highest rated 15 inch trailer tire we have is the part # TTWSF22515D which is a bias ply tire in size 225/75D15 that has a weight rating of 2,540 lbs at 65 psi. This would be way more than needed for a 3,500 lb axle.

The H78-15ST tire size is the same as the 225/75-15 tire size like the part # TTWSF22515D which is bias ply. I would recommend the radial version of this tire # TTWTRTM2257515D over the one you referenced as it is a bias ply. Radial tires run cooler and have more flexible sidewalls for better ground contact. The Taskmaster tires also have a higher speed rating at 81 mph which is nice since most tires are only rated for 65 mph.

  • Can a 215/75-15 Trailer Tire be Replaced with a 225/75-15 Trailer Tire
You might be able to use a 225/75-15 tire in place of a 205/75-15 tire. First, the wheels need to be the right size. If the width of the wheel is 6 or 6-1/2 inches where the tire sits then the 225 will fit. To get an accurate measurement the tire would have to be off the wheel. The overall width would be about 1 inch wider at most. The 225 is also going to be wider and taller than the 205. It will be 1.3 inches taller and 0.8 inches wider. You will need to make sure you have enough clearance...

For a tire in the same size and Load Range as the # TTWSF22515D that you referenced that would be better for highway use for a trailer I would recommend the part # TTWTRTM2257515D instead as this is a radial tire. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. A radial tire will normally run cooler than a bias ply tire, especially when the tire is under a load. A tire that runs cooler will last longer. This is a trailer...

We recommend about 3 inches from the top of the wheel to the fender on a trailer. A little more wouldn't hurt but I would not recommend any less than 3 inches. Trailer suspension has what is termed 'deflection' which is the amount of flex a trailer will experience when on rough roads or when hitting potholes so you do not want to get the wheel close enough to risk hitting if you hit a rough patch on a road. • Which Runs Cooler a Bias Ply or a Radial Tire
Flex can create heat, but due to the construction of bias ply tires (stiffer sidewalls and different ply angle), more heat is created with a bias-ply than a radial. It's basically about friction. The tire is going to flex as it travels down the road. But a tire that is more difficult to flex (bias ply), will create more friction as it is forced to flex therefore it will create more heat.
