Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

They are alright in my book. They held up to decently high loads and they have good treadware. I put 40,000 miles on them and only had 2 flats dude to nails. Still have yet to ware one out all the way. They only thing I would like better is on one of my tires had some belting show before I even put it on. It was molded far offcenter and inside the tread valley you could see the nylon

Only second time ordering from etrailer. Experience was great both times. I live in a small mountain town, could not get correct size tire. Called etrailer, no long wait for a difficult to understand sales desk. Got tire in 4 days.

Review from a similar Bias Ply in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I haven’t even opened the box yet. But let me tell you WHY I purchased these tires. I’ve had two blowouts on my golf cart trailer. Yes, I run it fast. Usually around 70-75 mph. And these tires are rated at over 81 mph! I’ve got to give them a try.

Comments
Great after 1 Year. Actually, I’ve not given much thought to my trailer tires since I put these on! I guess that says it all.

Review from a similar Bias Ply in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Overall I am happy with my purchase of these tires. I wanted the higher highway speed rating (M 81 mph) and that is what I got. I rate my satisfaction at 85%. Happy with cost. Happy with quicknest of filling my order and arrival time of the tires. A little less than 100% happy because the tires are already a year old (DOT 2619). That's one less year that the comfort zone of a six year tire. I understand LIFO and I can live with it.

I have had nothing but good experiences with etrailer. My 5 tires arrived quickly and they were fresh stock. As usual, each tire was individually boxed. They mounted and balanced good. The tech support was very courteous and helpful answering my questions and getting my order submitted.

I have had these tires on a P/U camper for a year now and I am very satisfied. I have pulled it to Co. from Tx. and have had now issues with them. I like the fact that they are rated at 81MPH and can be pulled safely at 70 to 75 MPH. When purchasing tires it is important that you find a tire to that will preform. You can find tires in this size cheaper at big box stores but you will not have the peace of mind you have with this tire from etrailer. This is the second set of tires that I purchased from etrailer in this load range and speed range. I use my P/U camper a lot. I will continue to purchase from etrailer. I have had no problems with delivery or costumer service. They say what they do and do what they say.

Seems like a good product. Came way over packaged but arrived in good shape. I gave 4 stars because its hard to rate something that I haven't had time to truly test out. In 3 to 5 years I can give a full honest review of the tires. Until then u can only give 4 stars.

Review from a similar Bias Ply in Trailer Tires and Wheels

At the time of this review the tires have about 900 miles on them. Most of the miles in the 60-70mph range. Purchased these tires for the 81mph speed rating. The 90psi air pressure usually has to be checked and some air added every few weeks. Over all the tires seem to be very good tires thus far. The previous tires had 7+ years of service. I am hoping these tires do as well.

Tires are holding up well. I am very satisfied with the tread wear. Tires are smooth at all speeds.

These tires with rim came in on time and un-damaged. They fit my trailer and are still in use today. I like the ease of ordering on line and had no hiccups. When ready to buy tires for my trailer again I will certainly buy them from etrailer.com

Quick and simple ordering process; I chose free shipping, thinking I'd get this pair of tires in 2 weeks, but they arrived in 6 days and it was easy to check their progress from halfway across the country. As for the tires: these are an exact match for those that came with my dual axle trailer, which we are using for timber and milling work in the Midwest--some 1500 miles away, so these bias ply tires have seen a load of interstate miles--currently 22,000-- as well as off-road timber work, and they have held up well. My trailer manufacturer has moved to radial tires (supposedly better for the highway), but I was pleased to find these priced right at etrailer. Class operation; will order from them again.

Comments
No problems this set is right at 18,000 miles about 98 highway and interstate use back and forth to Midwest and twice to East Coast. Should replace the original pair on the other axle which are getting smooth. Will do that at etrailer, of course. Thanks.

Very good value. Broke Springs on a small center console tender trailer, thought OH boy how am I gonna find parts for this. Searched on-line. Found etrailer and BAM = problem solved. Got springs, shackles, bolts, even an entire spare and tire for a couple hundred bucks and THEY ALL FIT and at least as good quality as the thing was build with. Excellent and pretty quick shipping and delivery for heavy stuff.

These tires work as expected. I was not able to mount them myself at home (I mount my own motorcycle tires), but a local tire shop handled that just fine for a small fee. I trailer my bikes to race tracks, and have had no issues with these, wet or dry roads. Of course, I'm not flying along when pulling a trailer.

Still working fine.

Tires are great, maybe best 12" available. But etrailer flattens them for shipping and t was not able to get them to return to shape, even with heat. Had to take to tire shop for install. But I expect great service from them.

Review from a similar Bias Ply in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Don't buy these tires. I purchased these as a cheap tire to put on a boat trailer that I rarely use. The tires arrived extremely warped and distorted. It was impossible to get the bead to seat on the rim. I tried using a big air compressor, I tried using a strap around the tires, I tried using the explosive method, I tried using the cheater tank, I took them to professional tire shops. I ended up having to put inner tubes inside these tubeless tires just to get them to seat on the bead. I would have been much better ahead to have not incured the $40 cost of the intertubes, and also not have incurred the hours of frustration and running around to tire shops. Don't buy these tires, it's false economy. Spend more money and get a premium quality tire. I'm very happy with E-trailer. I'm just not happy with these tires.

After one year of use I probably have 3000 miles on these jet ski trailer tires. They were the highest speed rated Tire of the size I could find. They have done well. I remember being a little freaked out when I got them in the mail because three of them fit in a box the size of a small slim TV and they look like bicycle tires uninflated. spent an additional $40 having them professionally mounted at a local Goodyear dealer.

Bought this instead of radial based on E trailer advise. It performed very well on rough Mexican roads 4400 kms. Showing wear signs but that's likely normal on small rims. Highway at 60 mph no issues. My friend shredded 2 radial trailer sidewalls on one two hour rough Mexican dirt road, construction rocky section so I was glad I followed etrailers recommendation.

This is a replacement tire. I used the same make and designation to match other trailer tires. Pep Boys did the mounting for about $17 on the old rim (install, check balance, valve stem and old tire disposal). These newer tires have the speed rating on them with an excellent 81 MPH. Which is better than the competitors with the same tire designation. The other manufactures had a speed rating of 65 MPH. The five star rating is based upon the cost, timely deliver and that it mounted and balanced without any issues. Thanks etrailer!

I called etrailer and ordering these tires was fast and simple. I chose these tires as they have a higher speed rating than other brands of the same size. All three Tires arrived in a large box and I took them down to have them mounted as these size tires are very difficult to mount without an Air Blast nozzle. I watched the guys at the tire shop try to inflate them like a normal Tire and they were having a hard time they broke out a large hose with some type of attachment and held it against the bead and blew air into the tire and then they beaded up. I have not put many miles on the tires so I cannot speak as to the quality and longevity. I was expecting tires made recently however the DOT numbers on the tire indicated they were 2016 so these were two years old already upon arrival.

I had to order 2 new trailer tires and wanted the same brand that was on it already. I discovered etrailer.com and noticed they carry the exact tire I was looking for. I was kind of in a hurry for the tires and was hoping they could get them to me quickly. They do have super fast shipping and the tires showed up just in time. I've ordered lots of tires in my lifetime and this is the first time I've had tires delivered in a box. Each tire was in it's own box. I thought that was pretty cool. To me, it shows they care about their product. Thanks for the fast shipping and the extra care you take delivering tires.

From the initial order through the delivery at my front door, the process could not have been easier. The tire was delivered in a solid cardboard container preventing any damage in shipping. Mounted the next day and back on the road we were. Etrailer has my highest reccomendation and will receive my business from here on out.

  • Replacement Tires for 2001 Ranger Boat Trailer with F65/14ST Tires
The best modern day replacement tire size for a F65/14ST is an ST205/75-14. This new size will be about 1.5" larger in overall diameter and about .5" larger in width. That said, you only need to account for an increased diameter of .75" and increased width of.25". If this does not put you outside of the recommend tire clearance (1" between frame and tire/3-4" between tire and fender) then I recommend using the Taskmaster ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire part # SF20514C. The tires you have on your trailer now have a radial ply construction which is great for long highway hauls but if you plan to go off-roading then you are going to want to switch to a bias ply construction which will still wok just fine on the highway but it has a stiffer sidewall that will be needed for going over bumps off-road. I recommend the Taskmaster ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire part # SF20514C which is an excellent option that has an aggressive tread pattern for better traction...

That's a long time to have your original tires. We recommend replacing your tires every 5 to 6 years regardless of the mileage on them. Radial tires do generally run cooler and wear better than bias tires. With that being said if the bias tires are working for you then it might be best to stick with it. Especially to keep the cost down and not replace your spare. However, depending on how old it is, you might want to replace your spare anyway. Tires will break down over time, especially...

I recommend keeping the same 205/75-14 size you have but unless you're predominantly driving on rough terrain I'd replace the bias tires with radials. Radial tires flex more than bias tires so they make better contact with the road. This creates better traction and tread wear. They also run cooler which helps them last longer. On the other...

Your trailer tire size F78-14st is an older tire size. The new label for that tire size is ST205/75D14. They are the same tire basically, but different size label. Your tire size is likely 14 inches instead of 15 inches because to measure the diameter of your tire, you do not measure the lip of the wheel. You only measure the part of the wheel the tire has contact with, also called the bead seat. With your tire size in mind I have two tire recommendations for you. If you do more highway...

  • Size 205/75-14 Trailer Tires for Off-Road Use
Since you mentioned you are traveling on gravel and rocky roads, the best option is to go with a 205/75-14 bias tire as opposed to a radial tire. The reason is, the cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, whereas cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle. This results in a stiffer sidewall for bias tires and the ability to handle rougher roads better than a radial tire. For a 205/75-14 bias trailer tire you have a couple options, depending...

The D in your existing tire size means it's a bias tire and the R stands for radial. Mixing radial tires with bias tires could result in uneven tire wear because they radials are more flexible.
