Premium Trailer Contender Radials

This radial ply tire from Taskmaster is constructed with double steel belts and double polyester cords for increased durability. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Unlike standard trailer tire tread, which has solid, continuous ribs, the tread on these Premium Trailer Contender radials has ribs with sipes. Siping is a process in which thin grooves (or sipes) are cut into the rubber of the tire. The grooves channel water away from the tread so that the tire makes better contact with the road. This feature greatly improves traction during wet, snowy, or icy conditions.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Review of Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - PTC35175

Today, we're going to take a look at the Taskmaster Premium Trailer Contender S-T two 35 75, our 17.5 radial trailer tire in a load range J. Now this is a premium radial tire. It's great for highway use and it is constructed with double steel belts, double polyester cords for nice long life. It is bake tested to ensure that the rubber holds up over time and they do use nylon tread firming belt overlay to help prevent tread separation. They do use tread depth bars like you'll see in passenger car tires to where you can look and gives you a quick visual indication of how your tread is wearing. This is an extensively tested.

Tread pattern provides maximum traction. If you notice on the tread pattern itself, there'll be breaks in the tread pattern and this will help channel water away from underneath the tire to improve traction during wet snowy or icy conditions. Now, this is a rugged tread designed for increased carrying capacity. This is a special trailer tire design. It'll couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire and it is created specifically for trailers it's not intended for use on any other vehicles. This tire does meet the DOT Department of Transportation specifications, and it will exceed your federal motor vehicle safety standards.

This tire is designed to fit on a 17 and a half inch by six and three quarter inch wide wheel, the tire size, which will be stamped on the sidewall, S-T for special trailer, two 35 75 R 17.5. The RL designate that it is a radial design tire. Section width on this tire is 9.2 inches, overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 31.4 and this is a load range J which means it's an 18 ply rated tire. The maximum load on this tire, if it's used single tire application is 6,005 pounds at 125 PSI and if it's used as dual tire application, it's 5,675 pounds at 125 PSI. Tread depth on this is a very deep, 1930 seconds of an inch and the last thing is most all the new trailer tires are coming through with speed ratings and the speed rating is designated by a letter designation and where that is on the tire is if you see right where we went over the size, if you go right after it, there'll be two numbers for the load index and then at the end of the letter L. Speed rating L will mean that it's 75 mile per hour speed rating, but that should do it for the review on the Taskmaster Premium Trailer Contender S-T two 35 75 or 17.5 radial trailer tire in a load range J..

Note- 4 star is only because I have no long term experience with them. These tires appear to be built well. They are uniform in structure- no obvious sidewall or tread irregularities. They pull straight and true in the short trip I have run them. They did take quite a bit of weight to balance, but no more than some of my truck tires. Mounted on a 12,000 lb toy hauler that has a 14,000 lb GTW rating.

Comments
1 year and 5000 miles later the tires look great and wear evenly. If it were not for the pandemic it would have twice the miles. The trailer pulls like a dream. I had this set balanced which improves wear and reduces stress. They run the same temp as the old tires- 140* at 70mph in 95* sun drenched asphalt. Over the winter there was no appreciable pressure loss which shows among other things that the liner on these tires is solid.

I'm impressed by the design and construction, straight and squared corners, plenty of stiffness in the sidewalls. I was replacing 'LT' rated tires and these definitely seem superior.

I don't tow often so I don't like to spend a lot on tires. The tires these replaced were the factory tires that came on the trailer when I purchased the trailer in 2000 and had less than 1200 miles on them. (There is a story behind why I have a trailer I literally never use) Two of them blew out sitting in the yard. So I purchased 4 of these and had them installed right before a 1550 mile trip. (and yes, one trip longer than the miles I had put on the trailer in the last 20 years. On that trip, I had no problems what so ever with the tires. Pulled great, tracked well.

Tire is overall very solid with good tread and no irregularities in the sidewalls. The M speed rating is better than what came on the trailer but I have no plans to drive 81 mph. Even though I don't have that many miles on it I expect it to hold up well.

Ask the Experts about this Taskmaster Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • What 235/75R17.5 Radial Trailer Tire With a J Load Range do you Recommend
When deciding between the Premium Trailer Contender 235/75R17.5 Radial Trailer Tire part # PTC35175 and the Provider 235/75R17.5 Radial Trailer Tire part # P35175 I would go with the Contender. There are two reasons for this. First I like the tread design of the Contender better for on road use since it is more in line with traditional trailer tires and secondly the Contender starts with 19/32" tread depth and the Provider start with 17/32". I do not think that either is a bad tire...

  • Can 235/75R17.5 Trailer Tires Work With 12,000 lb Axles
We don't offer super single tires so I can't speak to that, though I believe those are generally automotive tires and you will absolutely want "ST" or - special tires for your trailer, and we do have ST235/75R17.5 trailer tires: - Provider 235/75R17.5 Radial Trailer Tire # P35175 - Premium Trailer Contender 235/75R17.5 Radial Trailer Tire # PTC35175 Both of these are load range J trailer tires which have a 6,005 lb capacity per tire when inflated to their max psi so they will absolutely...

  • Best Trailer Tire To Replace 245/75-17.5 Tire On Car Hauler
I recommend Premium Trailer Contender 235/75R17.5 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range J part # PTC35175 to replace the 245/75/17.5 tires on that axle. You do want to replace both tires on the same axle with these because the tread is about 10mm thinner then the 245/75/17.5 tires that you have.
