Premium Trailer Contender Radials

This radial ply tire from Taskmaster is constructed with double steel belts and double polyester cords for increased durability. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Unlike standard trailer tire tread, which has solid, continuous ribs, the tread on these Premium Trailer Contender radials has ribs with breaks. These breaks allow water to run off to the sides so that the tire makes better contact with the road. This feature greatly improves traction during wet, snowy, or icy conditions.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Review of Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - PTC23516E

Today, we're going to take a look at the Taskmaster Premium Trailer Contender ST 235/80R16 radial trailer tire in a load range E. Now this is a premium radial tire. It's great for highway use. It is constructed with double steel belts, double polyester cords for nice long life. It is baked tested to ensure that the rubber holds up over time, and then they even use a nylon tread firming belt overlay to help prevent tread separation. It does use tread depth bars like you see in passenger car tires, where they're actually be able to give you a quick visual indication of how the tread is wearing.

This is an extensively tested tread pattern; provides maximum traction. If you look on the tread pattern, the blocks, they do have breaks in the tread pattern here, which you'll channel water underneath from away from underneath the tire to help improve traction during wet, snowy or icy conditions. And this is a special trailer tire design, which will couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. And it is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on any other vehicles. This does meet the DOT Department of Transportation specifications, and it does exceed your federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Few specs on this, this tire will fit on the wheel size of 16 inch by six inches wide 16 inch by six and a half inches wide and 16 inch by seven inches wide. The tire size, which will be stamped on the sidewall is ST for special trailer, 235/80R16. The R will designate that it's a radial design tire. Section width on this is 9.3 inches overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 30.8, and this is a load range E tire, which means it's a 10 ply rated tire.So the maximum load on this, if it's used in a single tire application is 3,520 pounds at the 80 PSI. If it's used in a dual tire application, it's 3,080 pounds at 80 PSI.

Tread depth on this is 11/30 seconds of an inch. And the maximum speed rating, all the new trailer tires are coming through with speed ratings now, and they do label it by a letter designation on the sidewall. Right here, if you see where the tire size is right after, you'll see two numbers for the load index. And then at the end is the letter M. Speed rating M will mean this is 81 mile per hour tire.

But that should do it for the review on the Taskmaster Premium Trailer Contender ST 235/80R16 radial trailer tire, in a load range E..

I don't tow often so I don't like to spend a lot on tires. The tires these replaced were the factory tires that came on the trailer when I purchased the trailer in 2000 and had less than 1200 miles on them. (There is a story behind why I have a trailer I literally never use) Two of them blew out sitting in the yard. So I purchased 4 of these and had them installed right before a 1550 mile trip. (and yes, one trip longer than the miles I had put on the trailer in the last 20 years. On that trip, I had no problems what so ever with the tires. Pulled great, tracked well.

Review from a similar Premium Contender in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Note- 4 star is only because I have no long term experience with them. These tires appear to be built well. They are uniform in structure- no obvious sidewall or tread irregularities. They pull straight and true in the short trip I have run them. They did take quite a bit of weight to balance, but no more than some of my truck tires. Mounted on a 12,000 lb toy hauler that has a 14,000 lb GTW rating.

Comments
1 year and 5000 miles later the tires look great and wear evenly. If it were not for the pandemic it would have twice the miles. The trailer pulls like a dream. I had this set balanced which improves wear and reduces stress. They run the same temp as the old tires- 140* at 70mph in 95* sun drenched asphalt. Over the winter there was no appreciable pressure loss which shows among other things that the liner on these tires is solid.

Review from a similar Premium Contender in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I'm impressed by the design and construction, straight and squared corners, plenty of stiffness in the sidewalls. I was replacing 'LT' rated tires and these definitely seem superior.

Review from a similar Premium Contender in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Tire is overall very solid with good tread and no irregularities in the sidewalls. The M speed rating is better than what came on the trailer but I have no plans to drive 81 mph. Even though I don't have that many miles on it I expect it to hold up well.

Ask the Experts about this Taskmaster Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Recommended 235/80-16 Trailer Tires For Tandem Axle Trailer Towing 13,500 lbs
We can get you the correctly rated 235/80-16 trailer tires, and the key to getting the tires with the right load range is to ensure that the total capacity of the four tires exceeds the total capacity of your loaded trailer. You said you will be towing a 9,000 lb truck with a 4,500 lb trailer, which is a total of 13,500 lbs. So to exceed that capacity you will need load range E 235/80-16 tires, and I highly recommend an option from Taskmaster: - Premium Trailer Contender ST235/80R16...

  • Can etrailer Mount and Balance Trailer Tires
We don't have a way to mount tires here so we can't do that. You'll need to have the tires like the part # PTC23516E you mounted locally to the rim you purchase. Trailer tires don't typically get balanced either. Instead they line up the heavy spot on the wheel with the light spot on the tire which gets the setup mostly balanced.

  • Replacement Tires For Trailer With 215/60R16 Tires
The closest size tire we carry to the 215/60-R16 is a ST215/75R14. The ST215/75R14 part # AM10229 has a section width of 8.5" and outer diameter of 26.8". Compared to the 215/60R16 that measures 26.16" in diameter and has a 8.46" section width. However the ST215/75R14 only fits a 14 inch wheel not a 16 inch wheel. The closest size tire we have to a 215/60-R16 that fits a 16 inch wheel is the ST235/80R16 tire part # PTC23516E. The ST235/80R16 has a section width of 9.25" and an outer...

  • Replacement for 235/65R16 Tires
Tires that are size 8.75-16.5 are not trailer tires, they are LT (light truck tires) and have a different wheel diameter than your 235/65R16 tires so you should not use them as replacements. Instead, I highly recommend the Premium Trailer Contender ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire # PTC23516E which has the same 16 inch wheel diameter and is load range E with a 3,520 lb capacity when inflated to its max 80 psi. I have added a link to a video review of this tire for you to check out.

  • Highest Capacity and 10-Ply Rated ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire
Yes, the 2830 lb rating on the Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire part # LHWL304 is the highest rated capacity and load range (load range E) we offer in 15 inch tires. The Westlake is a 10 ply rated tire and one of the higher quality brands of tires we carry because of its tread design. The Westlake tires are constructed of double steel belts and polyester cords with short broken up tread ribs in the rubber. The shorter tread ribs create more traction compared to tires with long continuous...
