Durable, Corrosion-Resistant PVD Finish Is Environmentally Friendly

PVD Finish

The highly corrosion-resistant finish on this steel wheel is applied through a physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating process. This process occurs in a vacuum environment so that the aluminum coating binds to the steel at a molecular level. As a result, the coating is harder, more durable, and more wear resistant than chrome plating.

Compared to hexavalent and trivalent chrome plating methods, the PVD process creates a finish that withstands the effects of water, flying debris, and other elements for a longer period of time. The aluminum-coated wheels performed for more than 168 hours in salt spray tests, up to 500 hours in water immersion tests, and up to 40 lbs in impact-resistance tests. They won't pit or peel like chrome-plated wheels, and they resist the effects of any chemicals that may be on the road, such as magnesium chloride or salt during icy or snowy weather.

In addition, the PVD coating process is an eco-friendly alternative to chrome plating, which is extremely toxic to the environment.

Improved Torque Retention Technology

Beveled Stud Holes Front and Back

The automotive-rated center disc is raised and the stud holes are beveled and uncoated for better clamp force retention. This technology helps the wheel stay tight against your hub without the need for constant retightening.

Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Tire with Wheel - AS15B645BMPVD Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Taskmaster ST205/75D15 bias trailer tire in a load range C on this 15-inch modular steel wheel with the black PVD finish and a 5 on 4 1/2-inch bolt pattern. This tire and wheel assembly is ideal for boat trailers, stock trailers, utility trailers and even campers. The wheel is a sturdy steel modular design wheel. When we say modular, that's the wheel that has the round holes all the way around the wheel. This wheel has the nice PVD finish on it, which is extremely corrosion resistant. The PVD stands for Physical Vapor Deposition and it's a coating process that creates a nice sleek black finish that's harder and more durable than a chrome plating. It has a tough wear-resistant coating, it won't pit or peal and it does resist the effects of any chemicals that might be on the road like magnesium chloride or salt during any icy or snowy weather.

The excellent corrosion resistance comes from a salt-spray rating of more than 168 hours. The technique is an environmentally friendly technique that will bind the coating to the wheel at a molecular level and if you'll notice, the coating on it is a very thin coating and it's done on the front and the back of the wheel. The wheel also has ITR technology, which is Improved Torque Retention. This is designed to help keep the wheel securely in place on your trailer. Right where the stud holes are, this is right where the lugs will hold your wheel to the trailer hub, they are beveled to give you better clamp force retention. The tire that's mounted on the wheel is a Taskmaster Bias Ply tire.

It is constructed with strong nylon cords. It does have the stiffer side walls, which allow the entire tire to flex easier. It also provides a nice smooth ride on uneven surfaces, which you might encounter in off-road and agricultural use. It does give you the tread depth bars like you'll see on passenger or light truck tires, that'll give you a quick visual indicator of the tread wear. This whole assembly does meet the Department of Transportation's specifications, it does exceed the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. A few specs on this, starting with the wheel.

The wheel is going to be the diameter, which is 15 inches, that's measured inside to inside. The width on the wheel is 6 inches wide, again, inside to inside. The bold pattern on this wheel is a 5 on 4 1/2-inch bolt pattern and on a wheel that's an odd number of lugs, in this case, 5, what you can do if you want to measure the bolt pattern, is just pick one of the lug holes, which is this one, or any one, if you're going to take this one and then measure directly from this hole to either one of these holes but when you measure it, you want to measure from the center of the starting hole to the outer edge of whichever hole you go to. On this one when you measure, it will be 4 1/2 inches so 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. The wheel does use a wheel lug size of 1/2 inch by 20. The weight capacity on just the wheel is 2,830 pounds.

Pilot hole diameter, the large hole here in the center of the wheel, goes over the hub on your trailer, that measures 3.3 inches. The tire that's mounted on this wheel. It's stamped, the size is stamped on the side, ST for Special Trailer, 205/75D15, the D means it's a diagonal belt design, which is a bias ply tire. Section width would be 8 inches. Overall diameter, which is from the bottom to the top when it's inflated, is 27.1. Now the tire itself is a load range C, which means it's a 6-ply rated tire, has a maximum load capacity of 1,820 pounds at 50psi and one last thing is most all the trailer tires are now coming with a speed rating stamped on the tire. On this one if you look, we'll find it, it's right . there it is. It's down by the wheel, right here and it's stamped on there 101M. The 101 is the load index. The M, the letter designates the speed rating and an M means it's 81 miles per hour. That's also listed there in parenthesis, 81 miles per hour. The maximum speed rating on this tire is 81 miles per hour. That should do it for our review on the Taskmaster ST205/75D15 bias trailer tire in a load range C on this 15-inch modular steel wheel with the black PVD finish and the 5 on 4 1/2-inch bolt pattern.

This is a very nice wheel and tire. The finish on the wheel is as nice as any I have seen. I will be using this a spare on my dual axle trailer. I foresee no special problems with it. Watch the video on this product, for the man explains it perfectly.

Review from a similar Black PVD Bias Ply in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Very nice wheels , Look sharp and clean . The taller sidewall on bias ply tires have more shock absorption than most radials in my experience. My boat trailer has a very stiff torsion axle so bias tires work best for me .

Ask the Experts about this Taskmaster Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Are Pre-Mounted Trailer Tire/Wheel Combination Products Dynamically Balanced Like Automobile Tires
The tire/wheel combination products that we offer come from the manufacturer already pre-mounted. The tire's low spot is matched to the rim's high spot when they are mounted together. This is not the same as an actual dynamic tire balancing as you would have done when you buy new tires for your automobile but it does provide enough balance for a trailer tire. Certainly you could have trailer tires dynamically balanced by a shop that has the required equipment but it is not absolutely...

  • Why Do Some Trailer Tires have the Letter R in the Size and Others the Letter D
The difference between the letters D and R on a trailer tire size is to show the different tire's construction. D stands for bias ply and R for radial. The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, and the cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. A radial tire flexes more...
