The Nitrogen Advantage

Nitro Fill Logo

The NitroFill inflation process filters out oxygen to ensure that this tire-and-wheel assembly is filled with 95 to 99.9 percent pure nitrogen. Nitrogen-inflated tires maintain pressure better than tires inflated with standard air. This makes them ideal for RVs and trailers that are driven infrequently or sit in storage for long periods of time. Other benefits of consistent tire pressure are better fuel economy, improved braking and handling, decreased chance of tire failure, and longer tire life.

A tire inflated with standard air, which contains oxygen, is prone to fluctuations in pressure due to loss of air over time and ambient temperature changes. Nitrogen-inflated tires don't experience these fluctuations for a couple reasons. First, nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, so they are less likely to permeate a rubber tire. Second, nitrogen is a dry gas, so it won't allow condensation to build inside the tire. A tire inflated with standard air may have moisture in it, which means it is more likely to be affected by ambient temperature.

In addition, the moisture that can collect in a tire inflated with standard air will contribute to corrosion of the wheel and deterioration of the rubber tire from the inside out. A nitrogen-inflated tire-and-wheel assembly is less likely to experience this type of decay. Less moisture in the tire also means reduced running temperatures.

If necessary, you can top off the tire with standard compressed air. But to maintain the benefits of nitrogen, the tire must be refilled with nitrogen.

Steel Lug Nut Inserts

This aluminum wheel comes with steel inserts in the lug nut wells. The inserts are pressed into the aluminum, and they help prevent the holes from wearing down over time. This ensures that the wheel stays secured to your trailer hub and that you won't have to constantly retorque the lug nuts.

Westlake Radials

This radial ply tire from Westlake is constructed with double steel belts and double polyester cords for increased durability. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Unlike standard trailer tire tread, this deep, rugged tread channels water away so that the tire makes better contact with the road. This greatly improves traction during wet, snowy, or icy conditions. Because of this, the tire is specifically designed for off-roading on uneven terrain such as mud, sand, and grass, although it performs well on highways and other paved roads as well.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Lionshead Trailer Tires and Wheels - Tire with Wheel - LH66FR

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Westlake ST235/75R15 Off-Road Radial Trailer Tire in a Load Range D mounted on this 15 inch Gray Liger Aluminum wheel with the 6 on 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now, this tire and wheel assembly is ideal for campers and trailers that'll be going off-road in mud or uneven terrain. This tire has a nice deep rugged tread, let me just zoom in here, so you can see a little bit better. This deep rugged tread will channel water and mud away from the tire to help improve traction during any of those off-road adventures. Now, this is a nitrogen filled tire, it'll help maintain the tire pressure longer than standard air, and it'll help prolong the life of the tire and the wheel, and the way you can tell that it's nitrogen filled is if you go to where the valve stem is, if you noticed, they have a green cap on as the valve stem cap, that green cap does indicates that this is filled with nitrogen.

The wheel it's mounted on is a nice aluminum wheel, it's very durable, lightweight, and rustproof, it is a Liger Series design, which is six spoke design, and if you noticed it's in gunmetal gray, and then it has the machine face on the edge of the spokes and even on the lip. Now, they do use a nice automotive-grade clear coat finish on the front of the wheel to help protect it from any scuffs and scratches, and also, I wanted to show you in the lug nut wells, where your lug nuts tightened down, they do use steel inserts, which will help keep that wheel securely in place on your trailer hub, prevents the holes from elongating or wearing down, so it eliminates the need for constant re-tightening of your lug nuts. Now, the tire is a Westlake Radial Tire, it is constructed with double steel belts, double nylon plies, and it does use a nylon tread firming belt overlay to help prevent tread separation, and it is a radial ply design tire, so it is great for highway use. This is an ST tire, which stands for special trailer tire, has the sturdy sidewalls, so that it can handle heavy loads, and it is created specifically for trailers, it's not intended for use on other vehicles. They do offer complimentary roadside assistance with this for two years, has flat tire service available 24/7 anywhere in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico, and this assembly does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation Specifications.

The tire itself will meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, and the wheel will meet SAE J1204 standards. Now, if you noticed, this wheel does not come with a center cap, if you do want those, we do sell those separately on our website. What I would recommend is make sure when you buy a center cap that the diameter of that center cap is 4.25 inches, 'cause that's the pilot hole diameter of this right here where your cap will go through. Few specs on this, the diameter on the wheel is 15 inches, the width on just the wheel is six inches wide. The bolt pattern on this wheel is a 6 on 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern, and if you wanna measure that on a wheel, that's an even number of lugs, like in this case, six.

It's pretty easy, because your lug holes are directly across from each other, so when you measure it, you just pick any hole, let's say this one, and you'll measure from the center of this lug nut hole to the center of the one right across from it. On this one, it'll measure 5 1/2 inches, so it's a 6 lug, 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern. The wheel lug size this wheel uses is a 1/2 inch by 20, weight capacity on just the wheel is 2,830 pounds, and the tire size, that'll be stamped on the sidewall, ST for special trailer, 235/75R15, the R means that it is a radial tire. The section width on this tire is 9.3 inches, overall diameter from the bottom to the top is 28.9. We mentioned it is a Load Range D tire, which is an eight ply rated tire, so it does have a maximum load capacity of 2,910 pounds at 65 psi, and the last thing I do wanna mention is most all the new trailer tires are coming through with speed ratings stamped on them, and they stamp it on the sidewall using a letter designation, and where you'll find it is if you go right by the size we just went over, right under it, it'll say speed rating L, and it'll say 75 miles per hour, so this has a 75 mile per hour speed rating.

But that should do it for the review on this Westlake ST235/75R15 Off-Road Radial Trailer Tire in a Load Range D on this 15 inch Gray Liger Aluminum wheel with the 6 on 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern..
