Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for All About the Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Tire w/ 15" Series T09 Aluminum Wheel

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 radial trailer tire in a load range D, and it's mounted on this 15 inch Sendel series T09 black machined aluminum trailer wheel with the 6 on 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now this tire wheel assembly is ideal for boat trailers, utility trailers, and campers. The wheel is a durable corrosion-resistant Sendel series T09, which is a six bolt aluminum wheel. You can see it has a black finish on it and then a machine finish on the face and lip. The front and the back of the wheel are clear coated for excellent corrosion resistance.

A few dimensions on the wheel itself, the diameter of the wheel is 15 inches. The width on just the wheel six inches wide. The bolt pattern on it is a 6 on 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern. And if you want to measure the bolt pattern on this with a wheel that's an even number of lugs, like in this case, six, it's pretty easy because if you look at the lug holes, they're directly across from each other. So all you have to do is get a tape measure and measure from the center of, pick any hole, measure from the center of that hole directly across to the center of the hole right across from it.

On this, it'll measure 5 1/2 inches, so it's a 6 on 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now if you notice, this wheel does not come with the center cap. If you do want a center cap, we do sell those separately on our website. You do wanna make sure to get a center cap that'll have the same diameter as the pilot hole here, 'cause when you install your center cap it'll go through this hole. The diameter on this pilot hole is 3.75 inches.

This does use a wheel lug size of 1/2 inch by 20, and the weight capacity on just the wheel is 3,200 pounds. Now the tire that's mounted on it, it is a Kenda Karrier special trailer radial tire. That special trailer tire design has double steel belts, full nylon plies to combine for superior function and long life. Does use a silica-infused tread. And if you look at the tread design, you can see the cuts that are on the blocks.

Those are called sipes and they reduce hydroplaning. This gives excellent handling in off-pavement situations. We mentioned it's a ST, which is a special trailer tire, has the sturdy sidewall so it can handle heavy loads and it is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on other vehicles. The tire size, which will be stamped on the sidewall right here, you can see ST, for special trailer, 225/75R15, the R means that it is a radial tire. Section width on this tire, 8.6 inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 28.5. Load range on this is a D, which means it's an eight-ply rated tire. So it does have a maximum load capacity of 2,540 pounds at 65 PSI. And this assembly does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation, specifications. And the last thing I do wanna mention, it does come with a speed rating, which is stamped on the sidewall and it's stamped with a letter designation. And where you'll find that is right after the tire size, you'll see two numbers for the load index and then the letter M. Speed rating M will mean this has an 81 mile per hour speed rating. But that's gonna do it for a look at this Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 radial trailer tire in a load range D mounted on this 15-inch Sendel series T09 black machined aluminum trailer wheel.
