Determining the Bolt Pattern
The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.
To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)
On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)
Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

Hello everybody, this is jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Kenda Karrier ST145 R12 S-Trail radial trailer tire in a load range E and it's mounted on this 12-inch gunmetal aluminum trailer wheel with the 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now this tire and wheel assembly's ideal for stock trailers, utility trailers, campers. The wheel is a gunmetal five spoke aluminum AM01 series wheel. If you notice, has a nice machined face on it and it's very durable, lightweight, and rust proof. They do use a clear coat finish on the front and even on the back of the wheel, protects from scuffs and scratches.
Now one of the nice features I like on this wheel is they use steel inserts where the lug nut wells are, and that's designed to help keep the wheel securely in place on your trailer hub. Basically when you go to put this up on your hub, you put it over the wheel bolts, put your lug nuts on, when you torque 'em down, those steel inserts prevent those holes from elongating or wearing down, so it helps eliminate the need for constant re-tightening of the lug nuts. Few dimensions on this, the wheel diameter is 12 inches, width on just the wheels four inches wide. Now the bolt pattern on this wheel is a 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. And if you wanna measure that on a wheel, it's an odd number of lugs, like in this case, five.
What you have to do is pick any hole, let's say this one, and then you're gonna measure from that hole directly across to either one of these holes. But the trick is you measure from the center of the starting hole to the furthest edge of the hole that you measure to. So on this one it'll measure 4 1/2 inches. So that means it's a five lug, 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now the wheel lug size that's used on this is 1/2 inch by 20.
The weight capacity on just the wheel is 1,520 pounds. Now if you notice this wheel does not have a center cap, we do sell those separately. If you do want one, you just need to make sure you get one that has the same diameter as this pilot hole right here and that would measure 3.19 inches. The tire on this is a Kenda Karrier S-Trail radial tire, does have double steel belts, full nylon flies, and they combine for superior function and long life. The tread on it is a computer-generated tread design and they use premium rubber compound materials that gives you superior traction in wet or dry conditions.
The tire is an ST, which is a special trailer tire, has sturdy sidewalls so they can handle heavy loads and it is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on other vehicles. The tire size, which will be stamped on the sidewall, ST for Special trailer 145 R12. R means that it is a radial tire, section width 5.8 inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's in flight, it's 21.4, and this tire is at load range E, which means it's a 10-ply rated tire, so it has a maximum load of 1,520 pounds at 80 PSI. And the last thing I do wanna mention, trailer tires now do put a speed rating on it and it's with a letter designation on the sidewall. And where you'll find that is right down here along the wheel where the tire size is listed. Right after it you'll see a number and then a letter M. Speed rating M means this has an 81 mile-per-hour speed rating and this tire and wheel assembly does meet the Department of Transportation specifications. But that's gonna do it for a look at the Kenda Karrier ST 145 R12 S-Trail radial trailer tire in a load range E mounted on this 12 inch gunmetal aluminum trailer wheel.
