Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

WAS SO HAPPY, I ADDED A VIDEO TO MY EXTENSIVE CHANNEL, ALL ABOUT THE REPLACING OF MY TIRES AND RIMS. IT EXPLAINS IT ALL. IF MY BOAT CAN'T MAKE IT TO TE WATER. I'M OUT OF BUSINESS THAT DAY.

Nice product. Arrived on time in excellent condition. Product description says the wheels are “hot dip galvanized” but they look too smooth and pretty for that. I suspect they are electro-galvanized and maybe have a polymer varnish on top. Honest descriptions are important to maintain trust with customers. Big question in my mind is How much zinc is there?

Comments
Thank you for the review! The manufacturer says that their wheels are hot dipped galvanized and not electro galvanized. They dip the wheel and completely submerge it to ensure the entire surface area is covered. The said they are not sure of the zinc content.

The galvanized loadstar wheels are perfect fit and tires are already mounted. I order from etrailer with confidence knowing that the products are high quality and fit the specialty needs of trailers and towing. Prices are competitive, communication is very good and delivery is prompt. Will order again as needed.

I've been boating for the better part of 20 years and for the majority of that time I've made most purchases at local marinas and shops. When I did a simple search for a common tire I was amazed by the difference in price between my local shop and etrailer.com. The reviews looked were overwhelmingly positive so I went for it. I was absolutely amazed by the service, price and incredibly fast delivery time. Also, the tracking system was another major factor in making me feel very comfortable with etrailer.com. I'm back on the site tonight to purchase yet another tire as a spare because the other two look so good!! etrailer... you've earned my business and my trust!

Great product. Just what I needed. Matched with a Fulton Spare Tire Carrier. A happy customer... mostly with the customer service of etrailer. Very professional... received trailer products on multiple orders recently. Fast delivery and outstanding follow-up and support from etrailer staff. Would highly recommend this company and their products for your trailer needs.

Bought for our travel trailer. Galvanized looks nice on the trailer. Were cheaper than the white rims, but still great quality. Tires are really nice as well. They came in in their own boxes. They arrived in good shape. I will definately be back when I need tires for my car trailer! Love the service and fast shipping. Was not my first time ordering with etrailer, and won't be my last! Great quality stuff. Best prices around!

You folks did it again! On time and looking fine. Thanks etrailer

Although my trailer tires looked just fine, and had virtually no wear,my rims were so rusted they were leaking right thru the metal. I came across these tire with rim combos, and they were such a great price I just had to replace all 4.The quality of the tires and the rims are better great one year later.

Comments
After a year now and the galvanized rims look perfect and the tires as well. Great quality folks

  • Replacement Wheel and Tire for a 26-Ft. Travel Trailer
Your dry weight and payload come out to 7396 pounds. This being a travel trailer, you probably have two 3500-lb axles. As such, each tire will need to have a capacity of at least 1750 pounds, so the tires will need a load range of C or higher. For your ST205/75D14 tires, we have options for load ranges C and D. However, your current tires are bias, and the only load range D that we have are radial, so C will be our option for you. I recommend the Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire...

  • Do Trailer Wheels And Tires Require Balancing?
Our trailer tire and wheel packages do not come balanced as they do not require it. Trailer wheel and tires are designed to support heavy loads and generally not looked at for a smooth vibration free ride. That is the same reason you virtually never see shocks on a trailer. Vehicles that carry passengers will have the wheels balanced to provide a smooth ride for the passengers inside the vehicle as well as provide a smoother ride for the suspension and steering components. Since trailers...

The 205/75-14 tire size indicates that it is for a 14 inch wheel. According to our resident tire expert, the listed diameter of a wheel is measured from bead to bead where the tire rests against the lip of the wheel. If you are measuring the face of the wheel, you have to account for the half inch or so of lip on each end. Our tire expert went out to the warehouse and measured a 14 inch trailer tire and came up with the correct 14 inch diameter when measured in the location on the...

  • Are the Trailer Wheel and Tire Combos Already Balanced
Every tire and every wheel has a high (heavy) spot and a low (light) spot. When the manufacturers mount the tires on the wheels, they try to offset the tire high spot and the wheel high spot to provide some balance. However, to achieve an actual balanced tire, you would need to take them to a tire shop and have them professionally balanced.

  • Replacement Tire and Wheel Size ST205/75D14 for a 2010 Trailmaster Boat Trailer
Yes, tire and wheel combo # AM3S450 will fit your 2010 Trailmaster boat trailer. This is basically an exact match for what you have. The D in the size (ST205/75D14) indicates a bias ply tire. If there was an R instead of a D that would indicate a radial tire. You always want the all the tires on a trailer to be the same construction type, either all bias or all radial. If you did end up needed a radial you would want tire and wheel combo # AM32156.

  • Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire, part # AM32156 Recommendation for Boat 4200 lb w/ Trailer
The main difference between a radial ply and bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords underneath the tire are run in different directions. On a bias tire, the cords run at a 32 degree angle from the direction of travel and on a radial tire, the cords will run at 90 degrees from direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. Because of the construction of a radial tire, the tire has more flex and will allow for more ground contact. That will improve...

The 3-7/8 inch measurement is the backspacing for the tire and wheel combo # AM3S450. Sort of an easy way to determine backspacing on a wheel with a zero offset is to take the width, 6 inches, divide by 2 to get 3 inches, then add approximately 1/2 inch for the lip to get 3-1/2 inches. It will get you close but the most accurate way is to remove the tire from the wheel, lie a flat board or yardstick across the wheel, then measure from the mounting surface to the bottom of the yardstick or board.
