Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The 3 trailer tires I received appear to be in good shape, however, no where on the etrailer.com website did it state that I would be purchasing tires that were manufactured between 2 and 3 years ago. I just assumed the tires would be at least within 1 year of the manufacture date. When I spoke with a Customer Service rep about this issue she said I could return the tires, but the shipping would be at MY cost. With all of the other on-line trailer stores available on the web, I don't think I'll be purchasing anything else from etrailer.com. 641254

Comments
Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured a year or even more before we received them. With the exception of the Goodyear Endurance, these tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they can sit in a warehouse for months until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can easily take months. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years from the date of purchase, assuming theyre not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The product warranty begins at the date of purchase, not the date of manufacture.

Great wheels and tires. Much nicer looking than the standard steel wheels, and with aluminum you don't have to worry about rust. The tires did very well at highway speeds. I would definitely recommend these to anyone considering them. I had an excellent buying experience with etrailer.com and will be buying from them again. • Difference Between Galvanized and Aluminum Wheel
We have Loadstar 185/80-13 bias tires and wheels, and they are essentially the same weight; the difference is that the galvanized wheel # AM3S334 is steel with an 8-spoke design and is made to resist corrosion. Galvanized wheels are often the type of wheel that people with a boat trailer might use. The Loadstar with an aluminum wheel # AM3S339 has a star spoke pattern and is clear coated on both sides. Each has a load range D with a wheel capacity of 1,660 lbs and speed rating of 81...

  • Recommended Lug Nut Specs for 1/2 Inch Studs and 13 Inch Aluminum Wheels
The lug nut torque on aluminum wheels is normally not the same as you get to larger wheels, but on 13 inch wheels they will be the same. Most specs say to torque 1/2 inch nuts on 13 inch wheels to 75-85 lbs. My recommendation is to torque the lugs on your wheels # AM3S339 to 75 foot lbs.

  • Does the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Trailer Tire with 13 Inch Wheel AM3S339 Need Balanced
It is not required to balance trailer tires/wheels therefore you do not need to have the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Aluminum Wheel part # AM3S339 machined balanced before use. If you like, you can take the above wheel/tire to a shop to have them balanced for you but make sure they use stick-on weights as the trailer will most likely chuck any clamp-on weighs off.

  • Difference Between ST185/80R13 and ST185/80D13 For Picking Out Spare
The difference between the letter R and D in the tire size you mentioned has to do with the construction of the tire. R stands for radial and D stands for Bias Ply. The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, and the cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. • What is Better for Salt Water: Chrome Lug Nuts or Stainless Steel Lug Nuts
It actually matters greatly! Chrome is not all that corrosion resistant. Stainless steel on the other hand is light years ahead of chrome as far as corrosion resistance. Since you are at the Gulf Coast and salt water stainless steel is the way to go. I do not know the size you need but some examples of stainless steel lug nuts include # AM90070 or # KALN1375S for 1/2"-20 threads (very common). On aluminum wheels regular lug nuts won't work well because they are not long enough to stick...

The Kenda Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Aluminum Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM3S339 has a max speed of 81 mph so the speed mixed with the ambient heat likely had a strong factor. If your tires weren't inflated to 65 psi cold prior to the trip that would also have an impact. This is a great tire and wheel so 7 years likely has taken a toll as well. The tire has a width of 7.2 inches and an outer diameter of 24.4 inches so if looking to upgrade size you will...

  • Can a Load Range D Trailer Tire be Used in Place of a Load Range C
The difference between load ranges is the plies, ply rating, and capacity. Going to a higher capacity or load range is fine so you can replace a load range C with a Load range D. Like you said, we have # AM3S339 which is a 185/80-13 on an aluminum wheel. If your existing wheels have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern then this tire and wheel combo will fit. The wheels we offer from Americana (like the wheel used on the # AM3S339 you mentioned) and HWT all have a zero offset, unless stated otherwise in the product description. A zero offset wheel would have the wheel mounting pad centered on the width of the rim. A positive offset moves the tire closer to the trailer, a negative offset moves the tire away from the trailer. • Availability of a 185/80-13 Tire and a 13 Inch Wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern
I spoke with my trailer tire and wheel expert and he stated that the pilot hole diameter is not an issue with a trailer wheel of this size. You can use a wheel with a pilot diameter between 2-1/2 to 4 inches. The reason is that the wheels this size are stud piloted and not hub piloted meaning that they do not rely on the hub to center the wheel. So for 13 inch wheel and tire with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern you can use Loadstar, # AM3S331, # AM3S334, or # AM3S339.
