Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Recommended ST175/80D13 Trailer Tire w/ a 4 Lug Wheel
Hey Tom! Not sure where you're getting the 3.25" or the 2.75" center to center distance, but with the exception of the item # AM20208 which is a 4 on 9.44, all of our 4 lug wheels measure 4" on center. For a ST175/80D13 Tire with a 4 lug wheel, I recommend the Loadstar item # AM3S120. This is a load range c tire with a 1,360 lbs capacity. It has a top speed of 81 mph.

  • What is the Offset Of the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Aluminum Wheel
The Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Aluminum Wheel # AM3S101 has a 0 offset.

  • Larger Tire and Wheel Size to Fit on Trailer with 4 on 4 inch Bolt Pattern
The biggest wheel size with a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern is the tire size ST175/80-13 like the part # AM3S101 that you referenced. This would be right at 4 inches taller than what you have now and would take up about 2 inches of the available fender space.

  • Recommended 13 Inch Tire and Wheel with 4 on 4 Inch Bolt Pattern
The bolt pattern of all of our wheels with 4 lugs are 4-on-4 inches meaning the holes are 4 inches on center apart. It sounds like that is what you have but you say the Loadstar ST175/80D13 # AM3S130 has a bolt pattern too small. Do you mean the wheel width? The wheel width on that one is 4-1/2 inches from bead seat to bead seat. When you add the tire, the width is 6.6 inches total. If this is the issue, we have some wheels that have a 5 inch width like # AM22322HWTB but all of the...

  • 13 inch Trailer Tire and Wheel Combos with 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern and 2.8 inch Pilot Hole
The pilot hole on a wheel for a trailer only matters if the wheel secures to the hub using lug bolts instead of lug nuts or if the hole size is too small to fit over the hub. One of our 13 inch tire and wheel combos with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern does have a 2.8 inch pilot hole. It is # AM3S101. I have linked a video review of it for you.

  • Backspacing of Loadstar ST175/80D13 AM3S101
The backspacing of S3101 tire and wheel part # AM3S101 is 3 inches which is the distance from the wheel mounting flange of the hub to outside edge. This can be used with standard lug nuts and wheel bolts for trailers like the part # AM90049.

  • Tire with Aluminum Wheel for 4 Lug Trailer Hubs
The Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3H300 have a nice fat look as you mentioned. There isn't a similar look for 13 inch wheels, so if you want that fat look with nice aluminum wheels you would need to use the smaller wheels you already referenced. For your 13 inch options, you can't use the fat tires, so I recommend using the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Aluminum Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range B # AM3S101. This is...

  • Recommended Replacement Wheel/Tire Combo for Thule Adventure 1500 Trailer
The 145/80-13 is an automotive tire. We recommend using trailer tires on a trailer, because they're built with thicker sidewalls that do a better job of withstanding the vertical load applied by the trailer. The # AM3S101 is a ST175/80-13 Load Range B tire mounted on a 13 x 5 aluminum rim with a 4 lug on 4 inch bolt circle. Each tire has a 1100lb weight capacity, so you'll have plenty of capacity. Keep in mind that if the trailer capacity is lower than the tire's load rating, you'll need...

  • Old trailer rim
If you somehow got a tire for a 13 inch wheel to fit a 14 inch rim I cannot safely recommend that you drive with that setup. Usually, a 175/70-13 is a passenger car tire. The closest fit for a trailer tire size would be a 175/80-13. For a rim and tire with that size that would fit your 4 on 4 bolt pattern I would recommend the part # AM3S040. This has a pilot diameter of 2.65 inches. The only other option for if you have a different pilot diameter would be the # AM3S101 which has a pilot...
