Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Capacity of Trailer Axle that Measures 1-3/4 inches in Diameter
Based on the diameter of your axle you most likely have a 2,000 lb axle capacity. So 4,000 lb since it's a tandem axle trailer. Upgrading to a 13 inch wheel and tire like the part # AM3S030 would be a great option as long as you have the room for the additional height of 24.1 inches.

  • What Is The Metric Size Conversion For The A78-13 ST Trailer Tire Size
The replacement size for the A78x13ST original tire is the ST175/80-13. The overall diameter is 24.1 inches and the overall width is 7 inches. You might want to measure on your trailer to make sure you have the clearance for the ST175/80-13 size. The Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13 inch White Wheel, # AM3S030, you have referenced is a bias tire on a 13 X 4-1/2 white wheel. The tire is a Load Range B, which means it is a 4-ply rated and has a maximum load of 1,100 lbs. at...

The 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire # AM30670 has a diameter of 20.7" and a width of 4.9". As long as you have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern you can look at the Castle Rock ST205/75R14 Radial Tire w/ 14" Liger Aluminum Wheel # CR39ZR if you are upgrading. This tire is 26.14" in diameter which will be just under 3" taller in your fender. It is 7.99" wide which will be 1.5" closer inside your fender which still gives you plenty of clearance. The aluminum wheels are also much better at displacing heat...

  • Smallest Size Tire Available to Fit on a Trailer for Storage
The smallest rim size that will accommodate 10 inch brake assemblies is 13 inches. Our smallest diameter tire that fits a 13 in rim is 175/80-13 sized tires. The diameter of a 175/80-13 sized tire is about 24 inches. We carry the tire by itself, like # AM1ST74, on a rim with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, # AM3S030, and on a rim with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, # AM3S050.

  • Can 6.50-13 Tire Be Used As Spare For 175/80-13
Hi Peter; I would not use a 6.50-13 tire as a spare for your 175/80-13 tires. This is an obsolete tire size so if you found a 6.50-13 it is likely a very old tire that won't be reliable. It will also have a different outer diameter. You could get by on it for a very short distance in an emergency to get a replacement or repair if you had to absolutely had to use it. However, it would be best to just get a new tire that is the same size like the # AM3S030 you looked at so you don't have...

This is our largest wheel tire combo available with a 4 lug pattern wheel. This tire has a 1,360-lb maximum load at 50 psi. If the wheel size on your boat trailer is 6-1/2 inches wide overall by 13 inches then you can use either ST175/80-13 tires and wheels such as # AM3S160 or ST185/80-13 tires and wheels such as # AM3S334. These tire and wheel combos come with galvanized wheels so they are great for marine applications like boat trailers. They also both have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. • Can Larger Tires and Rims be Used Without Changing Hubs?
You can certainly change the sizes of your tire and rim without changing hubs as long as your new rim has the same bolt pattern as your current hub. For example, the Loadstar # AM3S030 has 13" wheels and would fit a hub with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. In addition, you will also need to make sure there is enough clearance between the top of your tires and fender; it is recommended to have about three inches between the two.

An ST175/80-13 tire will likely work in place of your 6.50-13 tires. They fit on 13 inch diameter wheels that are 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 inches wide. Wheel width is not the overall width but the width on the inside where the tire sits. If your 13 inch wheels are 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 inches wide then the 175/80-13 tires will fit. We have both bias ply and radial tires in this size. I have included a link to all of the tire only option in a 175/80-13 for you.
