Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

p>Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Tires and rims look good , shipping was right on . Over all very satisfied

One year and several thousand miles later, these have done well as an upgrade from 15” wheels on our 12k lbs 36 foot RV travel trailer.

by:

The tires look great and perform well. Paul was able to get me the wheels in two days which was excellent because I was pressed for time. When the wheels arrived one of the Center caps had broken off in transit but Paul was quick to make it right and the replacement cap came free of charge and quickly enough that I got it before I had to hit the road.

Swapped out the steelies and low speed tires the trailer came with for the lighter aluminum wheels with higher speed tires. They tow great behind the sidecar and look a treat.

by:

Wheels/tires set are as advertised and shipped in reasonable time. Good quality.

I upgraded my 15’ jon boat trailer wheels to these radial load range D, replacing the bias ply load range B. I couldn’t be more pleased, not only do they look great, but with the extra weight I put in the boat I have peace of mind knowing it’s rolling on better rubber. I also ordered a spare tire mount and now have.a spare using one of the original tires.

I built my" tool shed" on a Triton aluminum trailer. I wanted doors on three sides. I do a lot of volunteer work at a Bible camp and it involves hauling my tools to the job. The trailer had 12x 4 inch wheels and I wanted something I more substantial to carry the load. I ordered the wheels and tires from etrailer. They came on time and we're exactly what I wanted. I have purchased other items from etrailer, and highly recommend this company

by:

Got these to replace the cheap pizza cutter tires that came with my Sea Doos. So much better and look great! Feel much safer towing with these tires compared to the other ones. Super fast shipping and excellent packaging. Got new lug nuts and center caps as well. Love etrailer!

by:

Very nice tire and wheel combo. Used to replace and upgraded on my Jayco Qwest Pop-up. Only compliant and VERY minor one, I spent more time removing stickers and labels from the wheels & tires than it took time to mount them :-) but overall highly recommended !!!

My 1st Jon Boat, transformed it from a dingy Ugly Green to what you see now, custom 3 phase paint and custom built decking and carpeting, added Garmin ECHOMAP UHD, painted the trailer and needed the get rid of the worn out Bias-Ply Tires that originally came with the boat when I purchased it. Decided to purchase the 12 inch Kenda tire and 12 inch aluminum HWT Wheel from etrailer I had a very good experience with the live rep over the phone while processing my order. My tires and wheels arrived in a timely manner and none of the aluminum wheels were damaged upon delivery. Will definitely make future purchases from etrailer! The tires rode well at 75 mph on the highway for fishing trip. Thanks etrailer!

While we do not have wheels that are both 17-1/2" AND 6-On-5.5" bolt pattern. I might have some options. If you want 6-5.5 pattern, the largest I can offer is 16" wheels like the West Lake # AM34969B radial tire with a sporty aluminum wheel. You might need to carefully measure your wheel/hubs to double check your wheel configuration. I have attached a link about measuring your lug pattern.

I believe you meant to type that you have 2 inches of clearance between the wall/frame of your trailer and the inside of your tire's sidewall. Now if you were to go with a Kenda ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 16" HWT Aluminum Wheel 6 on 5-1/2 - LR E - Black # AM34969B the overall width difference in tire sizes would be .9 of an inch total which gets split on either side of the wheel so you'd end up losing a total of .45 of an inch of clearance between the tire and the trailer. The first thing you will want to know is the lug bolt pattern on the hubs you have on your trailer. I have attached a helpful article that explains how to measure your wheel to determine the bolt hole pattern. If your trailer is being used on the road a lot then radial tires can be the best tire because they tend to run cooler than bias-ply tires. All 3 of the 16 inch wheel/tire combos we offer have a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. The 16 inch wheel/tire combo I recommend is the Karrier ST235/85R16...

As long as you have the needed wheel well and trailer frame clearance for a larger tire and wheel, you can certainly move up to a 16 inch tire on your 2004 Enclosed Trailer. Generally speaking you will want to have at least 3 inches from the top of the tire to the fender to accommodate for suspension travel. • Replacement 16-1/2 Inch Diameter Wheel for a Boat Trailer
I do have an option for you but we do not currently have any trailer wheels that are 16-1/2" diameter x 8" wide with a 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern. The closest option we have to this is the Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel part # AM20720DX which is 16-1/2"diameter x 6-3/4" wide and has a 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern. • ST235/80-16 Trailer Tire and Wheel Recommendation for a Toy Hauler Trailer
So there is a lot going on here. First you should know that trailer tires are constructed differently than passenger vehicle tires. Trailer tires, with ST in front of the size, are built with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load whereas passenger vehicle tires are built for more lateral forces (because they have turning axles). This is why passenger vehicle tires should not be used on trailers. The main reason trailer tires see more blowouts is because people under inflate...

  • Could the Taskmaster Wheel and Tire TA39VR Replace a 8.75x16.5LT Tire
If your current wheels have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern the part # TA39VR would bolt up to your hub. If the capacity of this wheel/tire (3,520 lbs at 80 psi), is more than you would need then this would work well for you. Since you have a 6k axle and each these wheel/tire combos have capacities that are more than half of what you would need you should be fine. What is nice about this setup is that they are rated for 81 mph. Most trailer tires are limited to 65 miles per hour. Nothing...
