Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels - ST235 80R16 LR E Radial 16" Aluminum Wheel - AM34964

Hi, everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com, and today, we're gonna take a look at this Karrier ST235/80R16 Load Range E Radial Trailer Tire with 16-inch aluminum wheel on an eight on 6 1/2-inch bolt pattern. Now, this Kenda Karrier radial tire is a special trailer tire design that couples the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. This has been created specifically for trailers, so it's not intended for use on other vehicles. The double steel belts and full nylon plies combine for superior function and long life. The computer-generated tread design and premium rubber compound materials provide superior traction in wet or dry conditions. Now, as I mentioned, the tire size, as stamped here on our tire, is ST235/80R16, and the section width is 9.4 inches, and the outer diameter when inflated is 30.9 inches.

This is a Load Range E, meaning that it has a 10-ply rating, and the maximum load is 3,500 pounds at 90 PSI. For dual tire applications, it is 3,197 pounds at 90 PSI. This has a speed rating of M, indicating the maximum speed of this tire is 81 miles per hour. Now, moving on to the wheel, this aluminum wheel is durable and rustproof, and it features an attractive five-star spoke pattern with the front and back of this wheel sporting a clear coat. Now, this wheel has an offset of -8 millimeters.

The mounting surface of the wheel sits inside of the rim's center line, and that negative offset ensures that the wheel is positioned farther from your trailer frame. The rim dimensions, and just measuring the inside diameter here of our wheel, that's gonna be, again, 16 inches, and the width of this wheel is seven inches wide, and our bolt pattern, as I mentioned before, is eight on 6 1/2 inches, and of course, that means we have eight bolt holes with 6 1/2 inches from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side, so that's where we get our 6 1/2-inch measurement. Now, the wheel capacity is 3,200 pounds. The wheel stud size is 1/2 inch by 20, or 9/16 of an inch by 18. The center cap is sold separately, so if you pick one of those up, just make sure that it fits the pilot diameter of 4.9 inches.

Now, this tire and wheel assembly does meet the Department of Transportation specifications, and the wheel itself has a lifetime warranty against structural defects. Well, that's gonna conclude our brief look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me..

Perfect, exactly what I ordered. Arrived promptly and in new condition as expected. The tires even had the correct sidewall specified pressure on arrival. I’ve done business with etailer before and experienced a manufacturer defect with a product and the issue was resolved and a new product sent the same day. Your outstanding customer service is what keeps me coming back. Thanks for being a customer service oriented business! The only negative to these wheels is now I need to paint my trailer to keep it from looking like crap!

Great service from etrailer, the wheels & tires look great. The only disappointment was the manufacturer put stickers on the face of the wheels that was hard to clean off.

Review from a similar Karrier Aluminum in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I receive the tire and wheel package from Ups in one box. everything was packaged correctly with no damage. I replace the tires and wheels that came with my ultra tow trailer. This package is awesome the tires are about 2"wide and higher the the China bombs! We will be taking the trailer on a trip of 5000 miles later this summer I was concerned with the old tires and wheels I have no concerns with the new package. Oh they also look awesome !

Great wheels I got two of these to upgrade the tires for a 40x48 trailer. If you are looking for an update I would suggest to go with this. I wish they would have put the stickers on the back of the rims as the stickers do not come off clean.

The rims and tires is 5 stars, I am disappointed with the ship time. It shouldn’t take 2 weeks to ship something, if you have these items on stock.

Beautiful wheels. Tires look well mad. Good purchase price.

Comments
I have had these tires for one year now. The wheels still look great and the tire wear has been excellent. Tires seem to be real smooth while towing down the highway. Highly recommend them.

Review from a similar Karrier Aluminum in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Purchased two tire and wheel sets to replace a Load Star bias wheel and tire on my Peterson boat trailer prior to a long trip. The wheels appeared well made and good quality, and after riding a in the rain showed very little to no road dirt. Trip included four hours each way on interstate at 70 mph. The tires worked extremely well – less trailer wobble at speed, smoother trailering, improved handling of pot holes and road bumps, less perceived rolling resistance, less road noise, improved MPG (about 1.5 mph from prior trip), and a better trailering experience. The ordering experience from etrailer.com was excellent. The order shipped immediately. I was well informed during each step. The set was delivered neatly in a well packed box and was ahead of schedule.

Review from a similar Karrier Aluminum in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I bought these tires and wheels prior to a "Big Out West" camping trip, including the Grand Canyon and other national parks, during the summer of 2021. I bought 5 of them for my 6500 pound GVWR Rockwood Roo camping trailer; two axles plus a matching spare. Yes, I opted for the aluminum wheels; I was tired of the cheap steel wheel look, and steel wheels always seemed to start rusting by the time the first set of tires need to be replaced. That trip included nearly 6000 miles of towing, everything from long interstate stretches to mountain passes. For the record: I ran the rig through a CAT scale near the beginning of the trip, so I know I had slightly over 5000 pounds on the two trailer axles, which is well within the published rating of the tires. The tires and wheels did great. No problems at all. The tread is wearing evenly, and at a rate I’d expect for how I’m using the tires. These are my first aluminum trailer wheels, so I was careful to re-torque the wheel lugs regularly; they’ve been fine. I just returned from another shorter trip over the July 4th holiday of 2022, including about 1000 towing miles. I expect many more miles from these tires and wheels.

Nice tires and rims!! They came in a timely manner. They were bolt on ready. (minus the dang little warning stickers that leave goop wherever they were stuck) When ordering, I paid attention to the Load Rating. Never even thought that they would be SPEED rated?!?! So, I purchased tires that are rated at 65 MPH! But they have the correct Load Rating!! So, just a heads up, don’t make my mistake. check the Load AND Speed ratings BEFORE you buy!!! etrailers updates and follow up are excellent. Since the Speed Rating was my mistake, I did not check in with Customer Service. But my guess would be, based upon current experience, Customer Service is problem just as good as the rest of the services!

Thank you for the prompt delivery of the spare tire/wheel I ordered for my double triton pwc trailer. I am headed out on a trip next week and wanted to make sure I had a spare tire for the trailer with me just in case.I ordered it a little late and was not sure it would arrive in time. But etrailer.com shipped it immediately and it arrived in a couple days, exactly 1 week before my trip. A perfect fit and look also! Thank you etrailer.com

Review from a similar Karrier Aluminum in Trailer Tires and Wheels

The tires I received were all manufactured on different dates. The tires are all over a year and a half old and have no sheen on sidewalls. The sidewalls are already fading from black to grey. Two of the rims have slight damage on the edge from when the tires were mounted. etrailer customer service did offer to go through the process of sending them back and exchanging the order. I am traveling before this can realistically take place. I will need to spend that money again before I get a refund so I will have tires before I leave. After I took the survey I was informed someone would call me back to discuss my concerns. that was on 04/07/22 as of 04/08/22 that has not happened.

Comments
I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you. There will be a variety of manufactured dates on the tires that we carry. Tires have a 2-year extended warranty from the date of purchase, not the date of manufacturing.

I give it 5 stars based of off the ease of working with etrailer and the look of these wheels. I have had to replace tires every time I have made a coast to coast run. This is with the trailer at 80 % of its max load. I am hoping that these load D tires will carry the load. I will update my review when I return.

Comments
Outstanding. Ran the same set for the entire year with very little tread wear.

Review from a similar Karrier Aluminum in Trailer Tires and Wheels

This is the first boat & trailer that I have purchased in over 30 years so I had a lot to learn, again! Living in NM, a boat hasn't been a priority but enjoyed boating years ago and took the chance. I know that tires on any vehicle are extremely important but even more on a trailer that you are pulling. I have a 42' 5th Wheel RV and a 30' Horse trailer so this one is much smaller. The boat is only 15' and just over 900 lbs. but blowouts are no fun at all no matter the size of the trailer. These tires are 10 ply E-rated with great chrome wheels and look terrific. I quickly learned that C & D rated tires are the norm on small boat trailers but finding the higher E-rating should be well worth it in the long run. Brandi at etrailer answered all my questions on specs and even placed the order for me on the spot. She was just terrific, also knowledgeable, and willing to spend time getting any answers that she was uncertain about before she would give an answer. She did a great job and the tires were here in just a few days. She gets 10 Stars! Just to make certain, I had the wheels/tires balanced and installed at my local tire shop and even they were impressed with the quality of the tires. Time will tell on performance of the tires, but right now I would say that these tires and wheels should be well worth the investment.

Hello, after finishing installing spare tire rack, I end up with a problem, I will need to different size of wrenches. The nuts that came in kit are to small simply because of aluminum rim deep holes! By the video this is a set up for a flat steel rim, I was wondering if you could provide longer nuts for the aluminum rim. I'm send you at least 2 photos to help explaining my problem. I believe this rack may not be the most proper for this kind of rim, thank you

Comments
Because the vast majority of folks use a steel wheel for their spare tires, neither we nor Dutton-Lainson have a readily available off-the-shelf solution for your issue, but I believe I have a solution for you. Your best bet would be to use a longer carriage bolt, along with a nylon fender washer followed by a steel washer secured by the nut. The nylon fender washer will prevent the steel washer and nut from scratching that nice aluminum rim. Youll want the washers to be larger in diameter than the hole. I ran this by the folks at Dutton-Lainson, and they agreed that it sounded like a good solution.

Wheels and tires made it my house within 3 days of order. Wheels have a great finish and look great. (I probably should have grabbed the chrome lugs too, but they look great regardless) I really think it added value to my trailer. My racing buddies have given me many compliments.

These wheels look great a year after install. I have since purchased a spare to match as well.

The tires I got are a year old based on the dot stamp and the rims have a thick coating of dust. I contacted etrailer cs and was told it is common for them to sell tires this old. The dust will wipe old but it clearly demonstrates how long they sat around the warehouse Very disappointed

Comments
I spoke with our Tire expert. The DOT of a tire being from one year ago should not cause any issue for the lifespan of the tire, which does not begin until the tire is installed and the heat builds up inside the tire. We have all of our tires located in a climate controlled warehouse, so they are protected from all of the elements.

I have purchased wheels and tires for two kayak trailers from these folks and I can tell you this...quality is great, price is fair, but the customer service will blow you away. THIS is the type of company I want to deal with, and I will gladly pay a premium to do so. Fortunately with etraielr you don't have to pay a premium, you get the outstanding customer service AND great prices. I would HIGHLY recommend this company.

Upgraded my Ultra-Tow aluminum utility trailer. Excellent wheel/tire combo and great improvement from the white stock steel powder coated wheels. Can also now fit my 3/8" Pewag security chains through the wheel cut-outs. Shipped in expected time frame and packaged in a manner that prevented any damage. Only complaint is the oval label stuck on the face of the wheel. It warns you to only use soap & water and not chemicals on the wheel but the adhesive used for the label is so strong I had to use the chemical Goo Gone to remove the residue, talk about irony. They could have stuck this label on the back side of the wheel or use a less aggressive adhesive.

Exact fit for my triton LT jetski trailer (just had to trim the plastic 12" oem fender with a small knife to avoid rubbing). Excellent built quality. Tires and wheel come mounted and air prefilled ready to mount. These are radial tires just like your car, prefilled to about 50psi from factory. I even purchased an extra spare one !. ** Must have **

Great looking product and only slightly more expensive than standard wheels. Fit perfect, service was excellent and got the wheels/tires in just a couple of days. Haven’t technically used them yet, but will be taking our first trip in a few weeks. This was the final piece of my complete camper remodel, it really adds a nice finishing touch. I’ve also ordered the center wheel caps and lug nuts (not in picture). For the price, I think the new wheels visually add a ton of value to my camper by giving it a high-end look for a minimal cost. VERY pleased and plan on ordering a third for a spare. [Thumbs up]

  • Can 245/75-16 Tires Replace Tire Sizes 7.00-15LT and 235/75-15 on a Gooseneck Trailer
To determine if you will have enough room to install larger tires, you will want to determine how much space you have available with your current tires. A 245/75-15 tire will have a width of approximately 9-5/8 inches and an overall diameter of 30-1/2 inches. This tire size will be about 1 inches taller than the 7.00-15 tires and about 2 inches taller than the 235/75-15 tires. They will also be wider than the 7.00-15 tires by about 2-5/8 inches and wider than the 235/75-15 tire by about...

  • Offset of Wheel/Tire Combo # AM34964 Does it Include Center Cap and Lug Nuts
The offset of a wheel refers to the distance between the mounting surface of the wheel that touches the hub and the center line of the wheel. A negative offset will move the tire away from the trailer, while a positive offset will move the tire closer to the trailer. The AM34964 you referenced has an offset of negative 8 mm, which means the mounting surface is closer to the trailer. This means the center line of the wheel will be further from the trailer.
