Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Hands-On with the Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Tire w/ 16" Series 04 Aluminum Wheel

Jeff: Hello, our buddy, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today. We're going to take a look at this Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire in a load range E on this 16 inch high spec series 04 five spoke aluminum trailer wheel with the eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern. Now this tire wheel assembly is ideal for boat trailers, stock trailers, utility trailers, and campers, the wheels are aluminum wheel it's very durable, lightweight, and rustproof. It is a high spec series 04 design, which is the five spoke design and has the machine face and the lip on it with the silver accent. The front end, and even the back of the wheel are all clear coated for protection.

Now this wheel does use the ICF technology, which is Improved Clamp Force. It's designed to help keep your wheel securely in place offers a Bulletproof joint, which is created between the wheel and the hub when it's properly installed. So it eliminates the need for constant re-tightening of the lug nuts. The tire on this is a Kenda carrier radial tire uses double steel belts, full nylon plies to combine for superior function and long life. And the radial ply tire is great for highway use. They do use a premium rubber compound material to help disperse heat.

And this tire is an ST tire, which means Special Trailer tire has the sturdy sidewalls so they can handle heavy loads. It is created specific for trailers. It's not intended for use on any other vehicles. Now this tire with somebody does meet the DOT department of transportation specifications, a few measurements on this, the wheel, the diameter on the wheel, which is measured inside, inside is 16 inches, the width on just the wheel by itself is seven inches wide. Now this wheel does have a bolt pattern of eight on six and a half inches. And if you want to measure that on a wheel, it's an even number of lugs in this case, eight, it's pretty easy because the lugs are across from each other.

So you just pick any one of the holes. Let's say this one and you'll measure directly across to the hole right across from it from its center of this hole, to the center of the hole that you measure to. So on this wheel, it'll measure six and a half inches. So it's an eight lug six and a half inch bolt pattern. The wheel lug size issues is a half inch by 20 or nine 16 by 18.

Weight capacity on the wheel is 3,200 pounds. And the pilot hole diameter, which is the large hole here in the center of the wheel, that is 5.15 inches. Now this wheel does not come with the center cap.If you do want one, you just need to make sure the center cap you purchase does fit the pilot hole diameter of 5.15 inches. Now this wheel does have a slight offset of a positive five millimeters. And basically what the offset means is that this mounting surface, instead of being directly at the center of the wheel, which would be zero it's moved, the mounting service will move 5.5 millimeters towards the front, which would pull the wheel and tire inside a little bit. Tire size which is stamped on the tire right here is ST for Special Trailer, 23580R16. The R means it's a radial design tire section width on this tire is 9.4 inches overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 30.9 inches. And this tire is a load range, E which means it's a 10 ply rated tire, does have a maximum load capacity of 3,500 pounds at 90 PSI. And the last thing I do want to mention is most all the new trailer tires are coming through with speed ratings and the speed rating is stamped on the tire and a letter designation. And it's usually by the tire size. So right here where the sizes after it, you'll see two numbers for a load index. And then the letter M is stamp their speed rating M will mean that this is an 81 mile per hour tire speed rated tire. That should do it for the review on this Kenda Karrier, ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire in a load range E on this 16 inch high spec series 04, 5 spoke aluminum trailer wheel with the eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern.
