Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I needed brakes, hubs and seven tires and a spare for my 18k 3 axle trailer retrofit from mobile home parts to standard trailer parts. Developed a plan and shopped for parts and materials over a two week period. Concluded that etrailer had what I needed simply by going to their website I called them a number of times to confirm what I found. I ordered material in three stages. All three shipments came to me a day early. Material was exactly what I ordered. I now have a fundamentally new, good looking trailer. etrailer people without exception were knowledgable and helpful.

- AM32680

Great wheel/tire package for the price! The wheel seems well constructed and painted, and the tire has held up nice so far. I've only trailered and launched my boat once since putting these new wheels and tires on, but I'm happy with their performance so far. They shipped individually in their own cardboard box, so they were well protected. They also came pre-inflated at 65 PSI, but I upped that to 70 PSI for my 6000-pound boat & trailer combined weight. The sidewall info on the tire states a max PSI of 80.

Great replacement trailer tires and whe els

- AM32680

Exactly what we needed for our trailer. Delivered very quickly which was what we were hoping for!

Natalie answered my call for help, She asked me when do you need the tire and wheel? I replied "yesterday" ! She said OK! Then she said they would send it free shipping! I said lets do that! I placed this order on Monday morning, I received it on Wednesday late afternoon! THIS WEEK! These people are absolutely AMAZING! The day before I had a blowout on my portable emergency back-up generator. My tire and wheel was destroyed! I had it towed to my friends shop. I called my friends at Associated Power in Wilmington CA," Greg" recommended I did, they saved my life! I highly recommend them and I am now they're newest good will ambassador. They are good, friendly down home good people. Thanks, Natalie !!!!!!

- AM32680

Thank you for the excellent service with delivery. The tires were a perfect match. I put them on myself. The trailer pulls great with the new tires!

- AM32680

Ordering a spare tire for my camper could not have been easier. etrailer had the right tire I needed for a great price plus unbelievable free shipping.

- AM32680

Fine looking name brand tire on a pristine white wheel with a blue and a red pin stripe, that's a very nice touch. I purchased this for a spare on my camp trailer. You should always have a spare, spares are good, spares comforting, spares are smart -be smart. If you have a spare already, go check it out and make sure it is still serviceable, dead tires can look ok at a glance so make sure it is young and vibrant and up to the 70mph task when needed. Be safe and replace it if there's any doubt.

- AM32680

The tire and wheel looks good. However the mounting bracket is very small, weak and cheaply made. It is hard to imagine that this bracket will hold up. Also the bracket was not packaged correctly and arrived bent. The bracket was overpriced for what it is. You really need to add a heavy duty mounting bracket.

I will have our customer service team teach out to you. I see that you had purchased part # EM77316
Erickson Spare Trailer Tire Bracket Kit
which is a wing nut based carrier. We do not carry a heavier duty wing nut style carrier however if you have a bumper that you can use we do have a heavier duty u bolt style carrier part # TR-2

As always, i received my tire/wheel in 2 days, now that's service at a great price! Thank you.

- AM32680

Great looking rim and tire package and just as good was the super fast free U.P.S. delivery!

- AM32680

Tire came today and was exactly as expected! Worked great, looked great.

- AM32680

I am very happy with the business etrailer dose. I am a repeat customer and will be. The tire arrived to my expectation and has been in service since.

- AM32680

So starting out with 5 stars since I just put the wheels/tires on and do not have any miles on them. They came right on time and only 7 months old (according to the DOT date). Looks great on the RV and looking forward to rolling down the road next weekend!

- AM32680

Delivery was very fast, tires were as described. So far I have had no issues with the tires or wheels.

- AM32680

Awesome, was delivered when they said it would be.

- AM32680

Way to easy ! The tires mounted on the new rims were delivered to my door on the date promised. Prices are fair to excellent and a super deal when combined with free shipping. I had both new tires mounted on my 5th wheel an hour after delivery and am ready to head for elk camp.

Still working great a year and 8K miles later. I did use paste wax on the rims to try and protect the paint for a longer time period.

- AM32680

Just installed these last night and they appear to be great. Tires arrived 2 days early in great condition and exactly as described. Will update review if I encounter any issues during use. First purchase from and I am very impressed.

Still happy with them for the price. One of the wheels is rusting out a little bit after just one winter, but overall, still happy.

- AM32680

Installed and ready for travel . Costumer service, delivery and product all excellent. Thanks.

- AM32680

Just put 4900 mills on them with a trip Maine to Texas and back to Maine. No issues always making sure the cold pressures were in specifications. They are wearing perfectly even

- AM32680

Great tire. Over 12k miles on them with an overweight 30ft toy hauler/trailer. Spend the extra money to get this load E tire if you don't want to change tires every 1k miles like I did with load D tires. This product comes in the box ready to go. I didn't even need to add any air pressure. Very conveniant and costs about the same as putting a tire on your old rim with mounting, balancing, and a new high pressure valve stem. Keep in mind that rims have there own weight rating. Yours may not be rated for load E if you are replacing load D tires.

- AM32680

Great packaging, I liked how each wheel/tire was boxed. Needed 6 wheels and tires for a trailer I had purchased and these filled the bill nicely. Removed from the boxes and installed. No fooling around with getting wheels and tires separately. After a year of towing on these they have held up great with no issues. Thanks Etrailer!

  • Choosing Bigger Tires to Increase Trailer Ground Clearance
It depends on how much clearance you currently have around your wheels. Ideally, you should have 3 inches minimum clearance between your fender and your wheels and an inch minimum between your sidewall and trailer frame/wall. As your wheel size increases, your clearance decreases so please measure with that in mind. You current tires are 225/75/R15 similar to # AM32680. As you can see, this tire has an outside diameter of 28.4". Going up two inches would bring you to a wheel and tire...

Trailer tire and wheel packages like the Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2" - Load Range E # AM32680 do come with the high side of the tire matched to the low side of the wheel, but when it comes to balancing trailer tires, it's really not necessary.
