Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I give it 5 stars based of off the ease of working with etrailer and the look of these wheels. I have had to replace tires every time I have made a coast to coast run. This is with the trailer at 80 % of its max load. I am hoping that these load D tires will carry the load. I will update my review when I return.

Outstanding. Ran the same set for the entire year with very little tread wear.

Hello, after finishing installing spare tire rack, I end up with a problem, I will need to different size of wrenches. The nuts that came in kit are to small simply because of aluminum rim deep holes! By the video this is a set up for a flat steel rim, I was wondering if you could provide longer nuts for the aluminum rim. I'm send you at least 2 photos to help explaining my problem. I believe this rack may not be the most proper for this kind of rim, thank you

Comments
Because the vast majority of folks use a steel wheel for their spare tires, neither we nor Dutton-Lainson have a readily available off-the-shelf solution for your issue, but I believe I have a solution for you. Your best bet would be to use a longer carriage bolt, along with a nylon fender washer followed by a steel washer secured by the nut. The nylon fender washer will prevent the steel washer and nut from scratching that nice aluminum rim. Youll want the washers to be larger in diameter than the hole. I ran this by the folks at Dutton-Lainson, and they agreed that it sounded like a good solution.

Great looking product and only slightly more expensive than standard wheels. Fit perfect, service was excellent and got the wheels/tires in just a couple of days. Haven’t technically used them yet, but will be taking our first trip in a few weeks. This was the final piece of my complete camper remodel, it really adds a nice finishing touch. I’ve also ordered the center wheel caps and lug nuts (not in picture). For the price, I think the new wheels visually add a ton of value to my camper by giving it a high-end look for a minimal cost. VERY pleased and plan on ordering a third for a spare. [Thumbs up]

Wow! Great website, great service, great product and great price! I buy from internet sources on a regular basis and have never had an experience better than my etrailer.com purchase from start to delivery. etrailer.com came highly recommended to me from friends and social media groups. Now I join them in spreading the good news. I purchased a set of tires and wheels for my 2017camper. The Karrier Load range D steel belted radials mounted on aluminum wheels are a great upgrade from the nylon ply load range C tires on steel rims that came with my camper. I give etrailer.com the highest marks for price, service and delivery.

Thank you for the follow up. Yes I like the tires and wheels. They look great and have held up to the Northeast Ohio winters. They are on a duck hunting/fishing boat trailer so they see all sorts of weather. This is a 1982 boat and 1983 trailer I drug out of the weeds and rebuilt from a new axle up. I converted a roller trailer to bunks. Rebuilt and remodeled the boat and painted. I bought the wheels to match my truck.

Purchased two tire and wheel sets to replace a Load Star bias wheel and tire on my Peterson boat trailer prior to a long trip. The wheels appeared well made and good quality, and after riding a in the rain showed very little to no road dirt. Trip included four hours each way on interstate at 70 mph. The tires worked extremely well – less trailer wobble at speed, smoother trailering, improved handling of pot holes and road bumps, less perceived rolling resistance, less road noise, improved MPG (about 1.5 mph from prior trip), and a better trailering experience. The ordering experience from etrailer.com was excellent. The order shipped immediately. I was well informed during each step. The set was delivered neatly in a well packed box and was ahead of schedule.

I wanted to upgrade the wheels on my RV trailer. I did my research on the internet and I found these good-looking wheels that were matching all the dimensional numbers and had an improved load range (upgrade from C to D). As soon as I placed the order, George kept me informed about the status, all the way until they were delivered to my home. The same evening I put them on my SCAMP trailer and they look awesome. Even my wife was impressed once she saw them installed.

Very quality product, product was represented accurately, nice 5 spoke aluminum wheels. Suggestion: Do not put those two stickers on front of wheels. Thirty minutes each to remove and not scratch wheel. I would always use e-Trailer in the future.

I am in the process of painting my trailer -hope to send photos later. I luv the video descriptions of each item. “Best place to buy trailor tires and accessories!” 5 star Customers service. I purchased 5 of these tires to replace old bias ply tires on a tandem axle boat trailer. The trailer carries at 19.5 ft. Stratos center console fishing boat. The tires have performed perfectly over the first year of ownership and appear to be very high quality. The wheel is really nice looking and gave my older trailer a nice face lift. I would recommend these wheels and tires... great combination.

First off what can i say, Kudos to George and staff. The tires and rims that i order are not like the photo. They look a lot BETTER. They ride great on my boat trailer. I have a 2010 avalanche with the 5 spoke polished aluminium rims, almost a perfect match. I received them in an expeditious manner. I Also purchased the matching chrome lugs nuts. I am also going to get the chrome Bearings Buddy Bearing Protectors. Received a lot of complement from friends and neighbors who saw the old white rims, and they really like the new ones. First thing they say is that they match the truck rims (Ya) (Boat is white with gray silver metallic trim) Perfect match. ENOUGH SAID .......

Sorry to say that our dealer included a trailer with our boat purchase, that had ugly wheels and tires that were UNDER-rated for the weight of that boat and trailer. They said no better rated tires existed in that size. WRONG! ETrailer has better tires and nicer looking wheels. Now we have more confidence when pulling our "rig" down the road.

- AM31998

Delivery was prompt. I also bought stainless steel hub covers and SS lug nuts to match. I mounted a pair on my camper for a 1500 mile mountain trip. Every time I stopped, they were barely warm. The trailer tracked well and rode smoothly, which minimized trailer induced motion in my tow vehicle. etrailer weight matches the tires and wheels, and my local tire shop only had to balance one of the three (I ordered a spare). I have no complaints and would order again.

  • How To Fix 205/75-14 Tires Rubbing On a Boat Trailer
The most likely scenario you are experiencing is that the previous owner of the trailer installed a new tire size that is larger than the size that was originally equipped and the fenders are designed to be used with. Therefore, you are experiencing contact between the tire and fender. The recommended clearance between the top of the tire and bottom of the fender is around 4" as this will allow for the proper amount of suspension travel. • Do Aluminum Wheels Run Cooler than Steel
Aluminum does do a much better job at dissipating heat than steel, so to answer your question an aluminum wheel would run cooler than a steel one. In a trailer rim application this really wouldn't be much of an issue though and wouldn't offer you any benefit. Rim heat isn't usually a concern on a trailer so using an aluminum wheel isn't offered as a recommendation for helping remove heat. The real benefit to aluminum wheels is that they don't rust and they are typically lighter weight.
