Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Perfect, exactly what I ordered. Arrived promptly and in new condition as expected. The tires even had the correct sidewall specified pressure on arrival.

I’ve done business with etailer before and experienced a manufacturer defect with a product and the issue was resolved and a new product sent the same day. Your outstanding customer service is what keeps me coming back. Thanks for being a customer service oriented business!

The only negative to these wheels is now I need to paint my trailer to keep it from looking like crap!

Very fast shipping thanks for using UPS. Wheels look great.

Purchased two tire and wheel sets to replace a Load Star bias wheel and tire on my Peterson boat trailer prior to a long trip. The wheels appeared well made and good quality, and after riding a in the rain showed very little to no road dirt. Trip included four hours each way on interstate at 70 mph. The tires worked extremely well – less trailer wobble at speed, smoother trailering, improved handling of pot holes and road bumps, less perceived rolling resistance, less road noise, improved MPG (about 1.5 mph from prior trip), and a better trailering experience. The ordering experience from etrailer.com was excellent. The order shipped immediately. I was well informed during each step. The set was delivered neatly in a well packed box and was ahead of schedule.

by:

I give it 5 stars based of off the ease of working with etrailer and the look of these wheels. I have had to replace tires every time I have made a coast to coast run. This is with the trailer at 80 % of its max load. I am hoping that these load D tires will carry the load. I will update my review when I return.

Outstanding. Ran the same set for the entire year with very little tread wear.

Hello, after finishing installing spare tire rack, I end up with a problem, I will need to different size of wrenches. The nuts that came in kit are to small simply because of aluminum rim deep holes!
By the video this is a set up for a flat steel rim,
I was wondering if you could provide longer nuts for the aluminum rim.
I'm send you at least 2 photos to help explaining my problem.
I believe this rack may not be the most proper for this kind of rim, thank you

Comments
Because the vast majority of folks use a steel wheel for their spare tires, neither we nor Dutton-Lainson have a readily available off-the-shelf solution for your issue, but I believe I have a solution for you. Your best bet would be to use a longer carriage bolt, along with a nylon fender washer followed by a steel washer secured by the nut. The nylon fender washer will prevent the steel washer and nut from scratching that nice aluminum rim. Youll want the washers to be larger in diameter than the hole. I ran this by the folks at Dutton-Lainson, and they agreed that it sounded like a good solution.

Great looking product and only slightly more expensive than standard wheels. Fit perfect, service was excellent and got the wheels/tires in just a couple of days. Haven’t technically used them yet, but will be taking our first trip in a few weeks. This was the final piece of my complete camper remodel, it really adds a nice finishing touch. I’ve also ordered the center wheel caps and lug nuts (not in picture). For the price, I think the new wheels visually add a ton of value to my camper by giving it a high-end look for a minimal cost. VERY pleased and plan on ordering a third for a spare.
[Thumbs up]

by:

The tires I got are a year old based on the dot stamp and the rims have a thick coating of dust. I contacted etrailer cs and was told it is common for them to sell tires this old. The dust will wipe old but it clearly demonstrates how long they sat around the warehouse Very disappointed

Comments
I spoke with our Tire expert. The DOT of a tire being from one year ago should not cause any issue for the lifespan of the tire, which does not begin until the tire is installed and the heat builds up inside the tire. We have all of our tires located in a climate controlled warehouse, so they are protected from all of the elements.

I wanted to upgrade the wheels on my RV trailer. I did my research on the internet and I found these good-looking wheels that were matching all the dimensional numbers and had an improved load range (upgrade from C to D). As soon as I placed the order, George kept me informed about the status, all the way until they were delivered to my home. The same evening I put them on my SCAMP trailer and they look awesome. Even my wife was impressed once she saw them installed.

by:

Seems to be a good tire. I used it as a spare and I needed it one day. When my original wear out, I will get another and put the two on the trailer. The wheel looks good too.

by:

It does exactly what I needed it to do. Easy to mount and have not really thought about it since. Great delivery, service, and follow up from etrailer

by:

Shopped for good looking wheel with high quality tire for SeaRay 180 on ShoreLander trailer and found these. Were not immediately available but I received them on the projected date. Have not used yet on highway but definitely have a quality feel to them so far. Also always appreciate the free shipping.
Thanx etrailer

by:

Wow! Great website, great service, great product and great price! I buy from internet sources on a regular basis and have never had an experience better than my etrailer.com purchase from start to delivery.

etrailer.com came highly recommended to me from friends and social media groups. Now I join them in spreading the good news.

I purchased a set of tires and wheels for my 2017camper. The Karrier Load range D steel belted radials mounted on aluminum wheels are a great upgrade from the nylon ply load range C tires on steel rims that came with my camper.

I give etrailer.com the highest marks for price, service and delivery.

by:

Great price, well made, perfect fit. Still look new after almost full season of use

by:

These Rims and tires really gave my 16' Lund boat a nice sporty look. Definitely a good upgrade from the original basic white rims.

by:

Run on small camper.Wheels still look new, tires run cool for the speed. Going to purchase the same for my boat trailer.

by:

This combination exceeded expectations. The quality of load star D load rated tire and aluminum wheels have given this Tracker set up an awesome look. Quality at a great price compared to others.

by:

They are all awesome and when I need to replace him I will purchase the same ones from a trailer

by:

First off what can i say, Kudos to George and staff. The tires and rims that i order are not like the photo. They look a lot BETTER. They ride great on my boat trailer. I have a 2010 avalanche with the 5 spoke polished aluminium rims, almost a perfect match. I received them in an expeditious manner. I Also purchased the matching chrome lugs nuts. I am also going to get the chrome Bearings Buddy Bearing Protectors. Received a lot of complement from friends and neighbors who saw the old white rims, and they really like the new ones. First thing they say is that they match the truck rims (Ya) (Boat is white with gray silver metallic trim) Perfect match. ENOUGH SAID .......

by:

Thank you for the follow up. Yes I like the tires and wheels. They look great and have held up to the Northeast Ohio winters. They are on a duck hunting/fishing boat trailer so they see all sorts of weather. This is a 1982 boat and 1983 trailer I drug out of the weeds and rebuilt from a new axle up. I converted a roller trailer to bunks. Rebuilt and remodeled the boat and painted. I bought the wheels to match my truck.

by:

Wheels look good, I needed a tire that would last

by:

Tires arrived quickly, they appear to be top quality as I ordered. Always great service from etrailer.com.

by:

I purchased 5 of these tires to replace old bias ply tires on a tandem axle boat trailer. The trailer carries at 19.5 ft. Stratos center console fishing boat. The tires have performed perfectly over the first year of ownership and appear to be very high quality. The wheel is really nice looking and gave my older trailer a nice face lift. I would recommend these wheels and tires... great combination.

by:

Great tire & wheel.

by:

Sorry to say that our dealer included a trailer with our boat purchase, that had ugly wheels and tires that were UNDER-rated for the weight of that boat and trailer. They said no better rated tires existed in that size.

WRONG!

ETrailer has better tires and nicer looking wheels. Now we have more confidence when pulling our "rig" down the road.

by:

Love the rims and tires putting them on I. About 40 minutes!

  • Does the Trailer Tire and Wheel Combo # AM31998 Come Balanced
The wheel and tire combos that we sell come from the manufacturer with some balancing. They line up the heavy spot in the tire with the light spot on the wheel but they are not balanced on a machine with weights. Any tire shop with the proper equipment can balance the tires completely for a nominal fee. I have included some helpful links for you to view.

  • Aluminum Vs. Steel Trailer Wheels
The big advantage aluminum has over steel is corrosion resistance and being lighter weight. Steel is a stronger metal, but if the aluminum wheel has the rating to work for you setup it would be a better choice. We do not carry Carlisle brand tires. All things being equal between the size and load rating I am sure the Carlisle brand would be similar to the Karrier tires. Going to a higher load range certainly would not hurt, but if your trailer does fine with load range C and you have...

  • Can New Wheels Have a Larger Hub Bore than Wheels Being Replaced
If you're purchasing the Kenda Karrier # AM31998 you referenced these are lug centric wheels. This means they center on the hub using the lug nuts instead of the hub bore. With this being the case it is not a problem to buy new rims that have a slightly larger hub bore. If you are purchasing different wheels and they are hub centric, meaning they center on the hub bore, you will want to buy wheels with the exact same hub bore.

  • Do Aluminum Wheels Run Cooler than Steel
Aluminum does do a much better job at dissipating heat than steel, so to answer your question an aluminum wheel would run cooler than a steel one. In a trailer rim application this really wouldn't be much of an issue though and wouldn't offer you any benefit. Rim heat isn't usually a concern on a trailer so using an aluminum wheel isn't offered as a recommendation for helping remove heat. The real benefit to aluminum wheels is that they don't rust and they are typically lighter weight.
