Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Video Transcript for Review of Americana Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - AM1ST97

Today we're going to take a look at the Kenda Loadstar ST 225/75 D 15 bias trailer tire in a load range E. Now this is an ST tire which stands for special trailer tire. It is a bias ply tire. It's great for off pavement and agricultural use. It is designed to work only with trailers. It is constructed of durable nylon cords, has a nice computer generated tread design and premium rubber compound materials, give you superior traction in wet or dry conditions.

And this tire does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation, specifications.A few specs on this, the tire size which will be stamped on the sidewall, it's going to be ST for special trailer, 225/75 D 15. The D stands for diagonal belt which tells you it's a bias ply tire. Section width on this tire is going to be 8.6 inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 28.1 and this tire is a load range E, which means it's a 10 ply rated tire. So it does have a maximum load capacity of 2,830 pounds at 80 PSI.And the last thing I do want to mention is most all the new trailer tires are coming through with speed ratings on them.

And a speed rating is always stamped on the sidewall and it's designated by a letter designation. So right where the size was right after that, down here, you'll see two numbers for the load index and then the letter M. Speed rating M will mean 81 mile per hour speed rating. But that should do it for the review on the Kenda Loadstar, ST 225/75 D 15 bias trailer tire in a load range E.

Review from a similar Loadstar Bias in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I ordered these tires for my boat trailer as I have a family fishing trip to go on. And to my surprise they sent me two different size tires. Now I am in a bad situation because I have to take the time that I don’t have to call and explain to these people ( if I can get ahold of a person and not a computer) how they messed up my order. Then send the wrong one back and wait for the right one. In the meantime spend more money at a local tire shop for a cheap tire to get me through my trip. Then when the right tire comes in spend even more money having it installed.

Review from a similar Loadstar Bias in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I was surprised to get an invitation to review these tires about a year after purchase. That is a pretty rare commitment to quality and that makes me a pretty big fan of etrailer that's for sure!
When I originally purchase these I recall they were on a back order and took some time to come in, but etrailer was communicative throughout and honored the price at the time of the order even though tire prices were skyrocketing at the time and had gone up considerably by the time they were able to ship. They really are a class act.

As for the tires they are great too!

I had purchased a couple of sets of load range C tires (4.10-8) on rims locally at a big box store prior to this set and had a bunch of problems. They'd air themselves down because of poor fitment to the rim, and dry-rotted and checked within a year of being on the trailer.

These tires on the other hand are excellent in every way. They fit the standard 8" rims properly and hold air and a year later they still look great. They have good side to side traction and handle loading very well. They seem to wear like iron. They are well balanced.

I used these as an up-grade option over 4.10-8 Load Range C tires mounting them myself (I've got a manual tire machine) on the same rims after carefully measuring for clearance on the trailer. This was a good choice for me as even though I don't try to overload the trailer these slightly larger tires provide a better ride under a full load and generally are a tougher tire and better riding.

They travelled 1,300 to KY from MD and back shortly after I mounted them. While in KY I helped my Mom take down an entire garden shed, hauling it, everything that was in it, and a lot of other junk to the landfill in my small trailer (multiple trips). There were times where if I wasn't overloading the trailer, I was definitely at the bitter edge. I felt a lot more confident with these shoes on the trailer than I ever had with any other.

All in all these tires have my confidence and my recommendation!

Very narrow (where the rubber meets the road). Narrower than my previous purchases/use of 'Loadstar' and 'Carlisle' tires. More appropriate for a motorcycle

Review from a similar Loadstar Bias in Trailer Tires and Wheels

The last time I purchased this tire it was to be used as a spare. Recently had a tire go bad and decided to buy a new tire to match the spare I had and put both on the trailer. Both of the tires on the trailer are now the Kenda ST175/80D13 tire. Lets see how they hold up. Good looking tire. We will see if I can give a 5 star rating after some time on the ground.

Comments
Its been a year, and they look the same as when I installed them. No visible wear, and probably 2000 miles on them. I will bump my rating up to 5 stars.

Review from a similar Loadstar Bias in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I purchased these to replace the tires on my boat trailer. They fit the rim but seemed slightly smaller than the tires I took off. The only other thing I noticed is that the tires were made a few months apart and had slightly different lettering. The font or design was different between the two. Since I only had one on each side, it didn’t really matter. Nobody will ever notice it. The tire was as described and should fit the need perfectly. I have already pulled it a few times but nothing heavy, just a couple hundred pounds max including the trailer.

Comments
So far, so good. Still holding air and track great down the road.

Super fast shipping and good phone help as per etrailer!
Tire tech had some problem getting one of the tires
mounted due to its being compressed for shipping
purposes. Maybe a note should be added in listing about this issue
or video of technique used to assist the tire tech.
Thanks

Review from a similar Loadstar Bias in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I got this tire for my utility trailer because my old ones dry rotted out and finally started leaking after 28 years. I first replaced the spare and then the two on the trailer.
These Kenda tires came in holding good tire and bead shape, not twisted or mangled. I was pleased with that. The went on the rims really easy. I do it by hand using motorcycle tire irons. I also replaced the valve stems. I recommend these Kenda tires.

Tire was shipped fast. No hassle. Good quality. Price was competitive compared to the competitors. This tire is hard to find and it cost a lot for being so small.

Nice fresh rubber and larger diameter than the dry rotted tires I removed. Date code on tires less than 6 months old. Installed with two tire spoons and a lot of soap. As ever fast shipping, good prices and excellent service from etrailer.

Tires show no signs of age. They hold air great. As good as the day I installed them. Good product.

Best trailer tire on the market in my opinion. I installed these tires on my ATV trailer about a year ago and I see no signs of wear yet.

Awesome, no visible wear yet, several thousand miles on them.

I used these on my ATV trailer...The Load Range D makes a huge difference over the Load range C sidewalls. No more bouncing or swaying from sidewall flex. It really improved the ride quality of the trailer and are much tougher than most other trailer tires offered for a 13 inch rim.

Review from a similar Loadstar Bias in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Replacing my 14 year old tires with the same exact Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire on my pontoon boat trailer. Seem to be a good tire that has held up well. Rated for 87mph, which is great. While I don't drive that fast while towing, it's nice to know I have an extra margin for safety and heat distribution. Be sure to pay attention to Load Range. Mine requires E for a 10'' tire on a single axle trailer. Less than that would not be safe for my application. 1,650 lbs per side so 3,300lbs total. My package weigh is probably close to 3,000 lbs, so D would not be safe for my use. While I did have issues trying to order this tire last year with supplies issues, my recent order was filled promptly with fresh 2022 tires. Etrailer is great with communication and answers to questions.

  • Determining The Correct Capacity Tires For A 12K Keystone 5th Wheel Trailer
Blowing five tires in a year definitely isn't normal. Taking the pin weight of your fifth wheel into account when figuring out the load range for your tires is pretty common but I'd definitely recommend increasing the load range going forward to prevent these blow outs. I recommend going with the Kenda ST225/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1ST97, which has an E Load Range and can support a maximum load of 2,960lbs at 80 psi. These higher rated tires should have no issue handling the weight...

  • How To Stop Off-Road Trailers From Blowing 235/75-R15 Tires
I do have an option for you but a higher load range won't do you any good. The issue is that you're running radial tires which are great for highway but perform poorly off-road. I'd recommend simply switching to a bias ply, the Kenda ST225/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM1ST97. This way, you don't have to worry about fender clearance either as it's usually not as simple as just raising the fender. If you want new wheels as well, you could pair these with the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer...
