Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

  • Replacement Tires For Utility Trailer That Uses ST205/75D14
I can certainly help you out with that. If you just need replacement ST205/75D14 tires for your utility trailer then I recommend the Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire - Load Range C # AM1ST86. These are rated at 1,760 lbs each, translating to 3,520 lbs per axle which exceeds your trailer's GVWR of 2,990 lbs per axle per your photo. If you want the replacement wheel and tire combo so that you don't have to go to the tire shop to get them installed, you can go with the Loadstar ST205/75D14...

  • Difference Between Trailer Tires ST205/75D14 and ST205/75R14
Tire designations ST205/75D14 and ST205/75R14 are both for special trailer tires with a 205mm width, 75-percent aspect ratio and that fit a 14-inch wheel. The difference between them is the tire's type of construction. The ST205/75D14 tire is a bias ply type with a Load Range D rating. This size/grade tire has a weight capacity of 2,100-lbs at 65 psi. Lower capacity C- and B-rated tires in this size offer weight ratings of 1,760-lbs at 50 psi and 1,430-lbs at 35 psi, respectively. For...

  • Modern Size Replacements Needed for 7.00 x 14 Tires on Boat Trailer
The closest modern tire size to the 7.00 x 14 size you mentioned would be a ST205/75-14. The two load range C tires we offer are part # AM1ST86 in bias ply and # AM10234 in radial. The ST205/75-14 is about an inch larger in diameter and 3/4 of an inch wider than the tires you currently have. The load range C bias ply tire in that size is rated for 1,760 lbs at 50 psi. The radial is rated a bit higher at 1925lbs at 60 psi. For optimal tire performance and to realize the full load bearing...

  • Recommended Tires for Pop-Up Camper
The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10235 would be an excellent radial tire for your camper. We also have the Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1ST86 which, like your original tires, is a diagonal bias tire. The bias ply tire has a slightly lower weight rating (1,760 lbs at 50 psi). I usually recommend using a radial tire over a bias tire. Because of the construction of a radial tire, the tire has more flex and will allow for more ground contact. That will improve...

  • Upgrading Trailer Tires to a Higher Load Rating Radial Type for Extra Safety Margin
A tire of size 215/75-14 can be mounted to a 14-inch wheel with width of 5-1/2, 6, 6-1/2 or 7-inches. A narrower 205/75-14 tire can mount to many of these same wheel widths: 5-1/2, 6 or 6-1/2-inches. Moving to a higher load-range rating will give you extra safety margin and it will also allow that heavier tire to run a little bit cooler under the same load than a lower-rated tire would. The Kenda radial tire/wheel you referenced, part # AM3S455, is a great radial tire option (in Load...

  • Can Kenda Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire, Part # AM1ST86, Be Used as New Mobile Home Tires
The Kenda Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire, Part # AM1ST86, is not a one-time-use tire. It is specifically designed for routine use on a trailer and is not intended for use on other vehicles. This bias trailer tire is built with the stiff sidewall needed to support its Load Range C weight rating. It can carry a maximum load of 1760 lbs at 50 psi inflation pressure, making a set of these suitable for use on a 3000-lb-rated trailer axle. I have included a link to a helpful article...

  • Recommended 205/75-14 Tires for Off-Road Trailer
The tires you have on your trailer now have a radial ply construction which is great for long highway hauls but if you plan to go off-roading then you are going to want to switch to a bias ply construction which will still wok just fine on the highway but it has a stiffer sidewall that will be needed for going over bumps off-road. I recommend the ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM1ST86 which is an excellent option that has an aggressive tread pattern for better traction off-road....

  • Benefits of Changing to Larger Diameter Radial Trailer Tires on Travel Trailer
Changing to a larger diameter radial tire from a smaller bias ply type can offer several advantages. In general radial trailer tires run cooler than bias ply tires, especially when the tire is under a load. A tire that runs cooler will last longer. A bias ply tire has a stiffer sidewall than a radial, a feature that might be useful for off-road applications, but for highway operation a radial tire will flex more, and provide better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. • Can Kenda K558 205/75D14 AM3S440 Replace Kenda K550?
Both the Kenda K558 and the K550 you purchased are Bias ply tires, so as long as your old tire is also an ST205/75D14 tire, you can use the # AM3S440 you purchased without any issues. The only time mixing tires is an issue is if they're a different size, or if you mix radials and bias ply tires. Since both are bias ply, and I'm assuming you purchased the same size, you'll have no issues.

Yes, you can replace ST205/75R14 LRC tires with ST205/65R14 LRD tires. The difference is that LRC stands for load range C and has a capacity of 1,760 lbs at 50 psi. The LRD stands for load range D and has a capacity of 2,100 lbs at 65 psi. Please note that going to a higher capacity tire does not allow the trailer to carry more weight.

  • When to Replace a Trailer Tire Based on Date of Manufacture
Trailer tires that are not yet installed and that are kept in a controlled environment will not suffer significant deterioration after only a few months. In a typical retail environment tire inventory will cycle through every 3 to 9 months. Tire compounds are formulated to withstand the heat that is generated in use. They will actually deteriorate less when driven than when left unmounted. This is true even if they are kept in a controlled environment. However, if a tire was manufactured...

  • Size 205/75-14 Trailer Tires for Off-Road Use
Since you mentioned you are traveling on gravel and rocky roads, the best option is to go with a 205/75-14 bias tire as opposed to a radial tire. The reason is, the cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, whereas cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle. This results in a stiffer sidewall for bias tires and the ability to handle rougher roads better than a radial tire, so here is what you'll need: - Load Range C - 1,760 lbs Per Tire: Loadstar...

The replacement for the F65-14ST tire you mentioned would be a ST205/65-14, which is kind of an oddball size that we don't carry. The closest equivalent we carry would be 205/75-14. The tire you currently have is 24.6 inches in diameter, and 7.4 inch section width. The ST205/75-14 is 26.3 inches in diameter and 7.8 inches wide which is about a 1/2 inch wider and 1.7 inches larger in diameter. We have the 205/75-14 available in a bias-ply or a radial tire. Yes, the narrower ST205-75R14 tire will fit in place of an ST215-75R14, It is important for all of the trailer tires to be the same size and construction type (bias ply or radial). Using different sizes can cause tracking problems and lead to premature and/or uneven tire wear. Ideally you would replace all of the tires at the same time. There is a difference in width for the ST215-75R14 (8.4") # AM10234 and the ST205-75R14 (7.8") ex: # AM1ST86. You can replace all tires with the ST205-75R14,...

  • Recommended Replacement ST215/75R-14 Tires for Boat Trailer
The 'LT' would indicate a tire for a light truck. 'ST' or Special Trailer tires are manufactured differently from tires for passenger vehicles. The tire sidewalls will be thicker and can typically handle heavier loads and higher pressures. Therefore, we don't recommend using LT tires on a trailer. For a ST215/75R-14 tire in a load range C, I'd recommend part # AM10229. For a higher D load range tire, go with the Taskmaster # TTWTRTM2157514D, which provides a 2200 lb capacity at 65 psi....

  • Can a Wider Tire be Installed on a Jayco Jay Flight Trailer?
Upgrading to a wider wheel is a pretty common thing to do as there tends to be more aluminum options in the 15 x 6 wheels. The only real issue that comes up is spacing from the sidewall of the tire to the inside of the fender or frame. As long as putting a wider wheel, like the Aluminum Sendel Series T02 Machined Trailer Wheel - 15" x 6" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM22653, keeps at least 1 1/2 inches of space, you will be good to go. I usually tell people to make sure they also have at least 3...

I can give you a pretty good idea based on the dimensions of the spindle. Based on the dimensions you listed you have an 84 spindle which would mean you have between a 2,000 and 3,500 lb axle. If the hub is a 6 lug hub then it would be 3,500 most likely. Otherwise if 5 lug then it could fall anywhere between 2,000 and 3,500. If the B rated tires have a high enough capacity there's no reason you need to go with a C rating but there's also no reason you can't. It won't hurt anything. The F78-14 size is the same as today's 205/75-14 metric size. For C rated tires in that size I recommend # TR20514 for radials or # AM1ST86 for bias tires. They're both rated for 1,760 pounds at 50 psi. I couldn't tell by your picture if your current tires are radial or bias. Radial tires have less heat build up and therefore...

Since you are not replacing all of your tires, I do not recommend to use a ST205/75R14 to use as a spare because it is not a good idea to mix radial and bias ply tires. The D in your existing tire size means it's a bias tire and the R stands for radial. Mixing radial tires with bias tires could result in uneven tire wear because they radials are more flexible.
