Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for HWT Tires and Wheels - Wheel Only - AM22657 Review

Today we're going to review part number AM22657. This is the HWT 16" by 7" Series 03 Silver Modular Aluminum Trailer Wheel with an offset and the 6" on 5-1/2" bolt pattern. This wheel is very durable, corrosion resistant, aluminum construction, very light weight. The design is the Hi-Spec Series 03 which is the modular design, which is very attractive. When they say modular design that's the one that has the round holes all the way around the design of the wheel. If you notice the face of this wheel and the lip is all machine polished. They do clear coat the front and even the back of the wheel to protect that finish.

It does give a nice shine to it. It's a very attractive wheel. This is a high quality wheel that meets the Department of Transportation specifications. A few specs on this. We'll start with the diameter. The diameter is measured inside to inside.

This would be 16". If we take a tape measure, set the ruler on that, you can see it's right at 16". The width, the same way is inside to inside, or bead seat to bead seat, it's right at 7", so 16" x 7". The bolt patter on this wheel is a 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern. If you want to measure a bolt pattern and the wheel has an even number of lugs, all you have to do is pick one of the lug holes, we'll pick this one, and you'll measure from the center of this hole directly across to the center of the hole right across from it. We'll take our tape measure and we'll do the same thing.

If we go center to center, you can see is 5-1/2", so 6" on 5-1/2" bolt pattern. This wheel does use a lug size of either 1/2" by 20" or 9/16 by 18'. Pilot hole diameter which is the large hole here in the center of the wheel, that goes over the hub on your trailer, diameter of that opening is right at 4.25". The weight capacity on this wheel is 3,200. The last thing on this wheel, this wheel does come with an offset and it is a negative 8mm. The offset on the wheel is always measured the mounting surface.

Normally on a trailer wheel this mounting surface is right at the center line of the wheel. When it's there it's a 0 offset and a lot of our trailer wheels are like that. Some of them will have a minor offset. This one actually has a negative 8mm. What that's saying is this mounting surface right here, from the center line of the wheel, if it goes back toward the trailer, that mounting surface moves, is mounted this way on the wheel back, that's a negative. If it would go toward the front that's a positive. This one actually is negative 8mm so it's 8mm mounting surface from the center line, 8mm back toward the trailer. Since this mounting surface moves toward the trailer, this will move the tire away from the trailer. That should do it for the review on part number AM22657. This is the HWT 16" by 7" Series 03 Silver Modular Aluminum Trailer Wheel with an offset and a 6" on 5-1/2" bolt pattern.

eTrailer.com Customers Service Prevails! Purchased 5 HiSpec Series 3 Modular wheels to replace previously ordered Dexstar steel wheels that had lateral runout issues. This is my 2nd set of Hi-Spec aluminum wheels in the last 8 yrs, and these are really satisfying right out of the box due to the quality of casting, machining / close tolerances, and clear coat that seems to really hold up well here in the Central Texas sun. Only issue I had was the valve stem recess diameter was too small for my brass HD / high pressure valve stem hold down washers. At this price, why settle for heavier steel wheels and the increase in rotational mass or chance OEM production truck & SUV wheels with the occasional, but inevitable right hand side curb rubbing / side loading on a loaded trailer. These wheels were 6.5 lbs each lighter than the 25.6 lb steel wheels. 324629

Great value for an aluminum trailer wheel. I converted to 16" wheels from 15" using this wheel on my enclosed trailer. It has the same lug pattern as my OEM steel 15" wheel. Excellent finish and runs true hence very little weights required to balance wheel & tire. 7" rim width lets you install a larger tire with a higher load range rating. i.e. greater safety and tire life . I recommend this HWT wheel for trailer applications. 282816

Have used these alloy wheels with great success. The finish still looks as it came out of the box. Have put approximately 6,000 miles on the wheels and new Michelin with any problems. They are a great product and value!

The lug nuts I recommend for the Aluminum HWT Hi-Spec Series 03 Mod Trailer Wheel w/-8mm Offset - 16" x 7" Rim - 6 on 5-1/2 # AM22657 are based on the lug stud size and finish preference. I recommend using the Americana Trailer Wheel Lug Nut - 13/16" Diameter - Stainless Steel - 1/2" - 20 # AM90054 for 1/2 inch lugs or Chrome Trailer Wheel Lug Nut - 1/2" (Each) # 12CLN. • Can 16" Passenger Wheel Be Used on Cargo Trailer
A passenger vehicle aftermarket wheel can be used on a trailer as long as whatever offset it provides doesn't negatively affect trailer or wheel well clearances and the bolt pattern matches your hubs. The stance against using passenger wheels on trailers isn't quite as strict as using passenger tires (which I definitely don't recommend). If the wheel physically fits onto the hub without issue and it's properly rated for the trailer weight this is okay to do. With that being said...

I would be shocked if your customer's wheel hub used different studs but it would be worth checking first.

The Forest River website does not indicate specifications for their 2009 Cardinal 30TS 5th wheel, however the wheel/tire size on all of their current Cardinal Series RVs is 235/80R16E, and the stock hubs and rims are all 8-on-6-1/2 bolt pattern types. • Can Trailer Wheels With Positive Offsets Replace Trailer Wheels With Zero Offsets
Most trailer wheels do have a zero offset to evenly distribute the weight of the trailer on the wheels, however, that does not mean all trailer wheels must have a zero offset. As long as there is enough clearance between the inside of your tire and your trailer frame to accommodate for a negative offset, then you will have no problem using a wheel with a negative offset. The best way to determine if you will have room is to take the first number of your tire size, which is the width...

The stem comes with 2 sizes of rubber grommet (only one will be used) to allow installation in wheels with a valve stem hole diameter of 0.453-inches or 0.625-inches. The Aluminum HWT Hi-Spec Series 03 Mod Trailer Wheel # AM22657 actually has a negative 8 mm offset. The negative offset indicates the mounting surface of the wheel sits inside of the zero offset mark or moves the tire farther from the center of the trailer. As long as you have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern on your trailer hubs this rim should fit and work well. The negative offset would just mean the wheel would be slightly pushed out. That would be based on tire and valve stem not on the wheel itself.
