Determining the Bolt Pattern
The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.
To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)
On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)
Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

Jeff: Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at the Dexstar 17-1/2 inch by 6-3/4 inch Hub-Piloted Gray Steel Wheel, with the -.31 of an inch Offset and an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now this wheel's a sturdy steel construction, uses a nice gray powder coat finish over an e-coat primer, gives you excellent corrosion resistance. Now this wheel has a hub-piloted design, and what that means is it's designed to center on this pilot hole diameter right here. So, when you put this on the vehicle it'll center perfectly on here. The size of this pilot hole diameter is 4.75 inches.
And because it's hub-piloted, the holes, the bolt holes, they are non-chamfered. So it does require the use of flange nuts. And the wheel lug size you'd use would be a 5/8 by 18 size flange nut. This is a high quality wheel, meets the DOT, Department of Transportation specifications. It is made in the USA. Now we did mention the negative offset.
This is to ensure that the wheel is positioned away from the trailer frame when it's mounted. So a negative offset on a wheel is where this mounting surface, the back of the wheel, mounts to the vehicle. So if that mounting surface is right at the center of the wheel, that's where the zero, it starts. If that mounting surface moves to the back of the wheel, which is negative, that means it'll push the wheel out away from the trailer frame. So this one has an offset reading of -.31 of an inch.
A few dimensions on this. The diameter on the wheel, diameter is always measured inside the inside. So if we take our tape measure and we go inside the inside all the way across, its 17 and a half inches. The width on it is the same way it's inside the inside or bead seat to bead seat, so six and three quarter inches wide. The bolt pattern on this wheel is an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern, and if you want to measure that on a wheel, it's an even number of lugs, like in this case eight. It's pretty easy because all you have to do is pick any one of the lug holes, let's say this one, and then you'll measure from the center of that hole directly across to the center of the hole right across from it.
So on this one, it'll measure 6 and 1/2 inches. So that'll give you an eight lug, 6 and 1/2 inch bolt pattern. And the weight capacity on this wheel is 4,805 pounds. But that should do it for the review on the Dexstar 17 and a 1/2 inch by 6 and 3/1 inch Hub-Piloted Gray Steel Wheel with the -.31 of an inch offset and the 8 on 6 and 1/2 inch bolt pattern.
