Video Transcript for What to Know About the 42" Long Safety Chain with 5/16" Clevis Slip Hook

Hey, everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today, we have these Titan Chain 42 inch long safety chains with the clevis grab hook, and we'll take a look at how it fits as well as how it installs right here at etrailer.com. These are medium-duty safety chains, which are very important for if you want to tow safely. Now, for our kayak trailer here, which has a maximum load capacity of 3,500 pounds, these are a little bit overkill, but the concept is still the same. Make sure to use these whenever you tow, so that way, if anything happens, you know you're safe. These chains can be purchased in a quantity of one, but if you want to attach the end to your trailer and then hook onto your vehicle, you will need to get another chain in order to get your full set.

Some people like to use this by going in half. If you do go that route though, you will need to attach another grab hook in order to have that full safety chain experience. Well, speaking of grab hook, this is what it looks like. You have the same material as the links, and this is gonna be a clevis hook, so it fits onto your bracket, you also have this latch here to hold it in place. For your measurements, this is gonna be 13/16 of an inch in space, that's gonna be for your inside dimension.

The links are made of steel, but you might notice that they have a slight gold look to them, that's because they have a yellow chromate finish. That finish is there to help resist corrosion of your chains. For the measurement of your link, it's gonna be 5/16 of an inch for your inside diameter, and that measurement is important, because you do have to check the bolts on your trailer to see if it fits through. If you are using a welded bracket, you need to make sure that that fits as well. This is a good example of some old safety chains that need to be replaced.

And here we have our welded bracket, so you can see here the link that's attached to it, different from a bolt. Also, on our chain here, it has started to corrode, so you can see why it's important to get the right safety chains with the right material. So it is very important to choose the right safety chain for both your trailer as well as your vehicle. So if you like this chromate look to the chains, you like that clevis hook, and you find that the smaller dimension inside those links does fit whatever you are attaching it to, I'll show you how I got this installed. The first thing you need to do is you need to remove your old chains.

This style is we're using the bolt here to hold them together. I know a lot of people weld their links onto their welded brackets, and that's an option too, but we're not gonna do that one today. So I've got my tools here. We're gonna take off our old chains by removing this bolt. (impact driver buzzing) Let's loosen that nut, and once this bolt comes out, then the entire chain will pop out as well. So we're going to insert our bolt through our link, so that's what it's gonna look like inside the trailer. So here, we're gonna get the bolt in through first. Since there is a lip, we are threading our chains through from the inside. So that's one chain, and then we're gonna get the second one in there as well. Make sure both are properly attached. I know you can't see it, but I'm gonna get that lined up. And once they're in and threaded through the bolt, bring the bolt through, and make sure it's secured properly as per your trailer specifications. (impact driver buzzing) Just like that, you're able to replace your chains. And hopefully, this helped you out. If you did use the welded bracket way of securing it, just make sure that your links are secure and those welds are good. And check this with your vehicle and you're ready to go. So if you're getting a quantity of one for your trailer, make sure to get a clevis hook attachment. If you're getting quantity of two, make sure to get that number. You can find them all here at our website. But this right here was a look at the Titan Chain 42 inch long safety chains with the clevis grab hook here at etrailer.

  • How to Connect Trailer Safety Chain Hooks to Ford F-150 Factory Safety Chain Loops
The best solution for your Ford F-150 is to get two of the Durabilt Hammerlock Coupling Link for 1/2" Chain # DU96MR. This style of link is a little difficult to install but it's very secure and is designed specifically for the size of chain your trailer is equipped with. That 1" x 2" safety chain connection for your Ford OEM hitch has been a problem for Safety Chain Links like the part # TCTSCG70-842-06x1 you're looking at, but with the coupling link I referenced you'll be able to easily...

  • Capacity of Titan Safety Chains And Can They Be Shortened
The 5,000 lb capacity on the # TCTSCG70-842-06x1 is per chain. You are correct, the limit would be 10,000 lbs with two of the chains working together like a typical safety chain setup which would be higher than your current 7,600 lb limit. It is perfectly acceptable to shorten the chain to 24" and it will not reduce the capacity of the chains.

  • Replacement Safety Chains For a 21 Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
I recommend the 42" Long Safety Chain with 5/16" Clevis Grab Hook # TCTSCG70-842-06x1 for your 21' boat trailer. You will need two of these as they are sold individually. Each chain is rated for 5,000lbs and 42" long. The 3/8" clevis hooks are going to be used with much larger chains and are overkill for what you are needing.
