Video Transcript for Review of the Laclede 27" Long Trailer Safety Chain w/ 7/16" Hook

Hi, everyone. Aidan here at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install these replacement safety chains from Laclede. Now, each chain is going to have a 7/16th S hook on the end, a quarter inch diameter chain and each chain is going to be 27 inches long and that includes that S hook on the end. The S hook will go to our safety chain loops, of course. And then the free link at the end is what we'll actually install on the trailer side.

Now this does only come with one safety chain so if you need two, like we did today, be sure to pick up two for your trailer. Now these do have a safe working load limit of 1,250 pounds and a brake strength of 5,000 pounds, so just keep that in mind with what you're gonna be hauling on your trailer. They are gonna have a nice steel construction with a zinc coating. That's gonna help it resist some rust and corrosion, but it's not immune. Like anything metal sitting outside in the elements, eventually you probably will get some of that corrosion build up, so just keep an eye on them and make sure if you need your replace them, you do.

And that replacement process is really simple. We got ours done in no time. Check out how we did it. Now, the first step of the installation is gonna actually be for us replacing the old chains. So, we're gonna get these removed.

Now, ours aren't necessarily in bad shape, but we're just kind of doing this for demonstration purposes and on our trailer we'll want to remove this front bolt on the coupler because our safety chains are actually fed through that. So as I pull this bolt out, you'll see them fall just like that. With our old safety chains removed, we can take our old hardware that we had. You will need to either use your old hardware or pick up new hardware because the chains don't come with any new hardware but we'll just slide our bolt through, have a chain on either side, since we're replacing both. We can thread on this nut here and then we can secure everything down with our wrench and socket.

And with everything secured, we can take our safety chains, hook them onto the safety chain loops and then we're ready to hit the road. And that'll do it for our look at these Laclede safety chains. Thanks for watching..

Purchased a pair of safety chains and latch hooks to make new boat trailer safety chains. The design was based on the extensive product descriptions and everything went together perfectly. All items were received quickly and packed nicely. eTrailer always provides me with the best products and selection. Thanks again!

There still there and working

by:

I've been redoing this trailer .everything I've needed is exactly what I received. We'll be doing another one together thanks

Another excellent quality product from Etrailer. I have been a customer of etrailer for years and I have been happy with the products I receive from them. I recently installed a folding trailer tongue on my boat trailer and needed to install a safety chain for the hinge area. Perfect weight rating and length.

Just like they were made for my boat trailer with a folding tongue.

by:

The chains are very nice but not what is pictured. The shipping was fast and I would be more than willing to do business with Etrailer again.

by:

This is the second hitch I have purchased from etrailer and, again, it was a perfect fit. Everything I buy from here is exactly what they say it is and exactly what I was needing.

I will always recommend etrailer, they have never let me down.

All is good. All products are performing as expected and wanted. As usual I am more than satisfied with every product I have purchased from you. I also suggest to others they buy from you as I have always had good experiences.

by:

good quaily

There great, quick & easy

by:

My jet ski trailer came with a safety chain on one side from the factory. Now isn't that the most odd way to secure the trailer? I welded a matching metal tongue on the other side, drilled a hole and bolted in this safety chain. Perfect size and match. Recommended.

by:

I received my trailer safety chains sooner then expected. They are more then I expected , great value for the money. I didn,t get a chance to install them yet but I'm sure they will work fine. thanks .

by:

They safety chains were exactly what Hoped they'd be. Good quality. They arrived quickly and were packaged nicely. Thanks!!!!!!!

by:

I have bought many products from eTrailer including my fifth wheel hitch, but this is the first time that I had to return an item because of my error. I called eTrailer and spoke to Bridget A. and she made the process so easy. I received the product that I actually needed very quickly. And once they received my return, they credited my account. I give them an A+.

I have purchased several items from etrailer and recommend all of them and the folks at etrailer.
Items purchased by part #: 9653P; BK-70BB; 2118-605-04; 98174LED; PK12706; MCL11AKB; H20046.

Shipped well packaged. All items are accurately described and are fully functional. etrailer videos are a big help and their staff is knowledgeable!

The 12" Ball Extension Bar works Great. It allows me to make 90 Degree Angle Turns without hitting my trucks bumper. Of course I needed to extend the electrical light connection and added an additional length of Safety Chain (2118-605-04) with the (C81277) connector link. Works Great and the items got here in 3 days.

by:

Recently I purchased the Swagman Hitch Bike Racks (S64600) and the Hidden Hitch Ball Mounts (80233). After installing the items on my truck, I found that I needed extra long chains to hook the trailer to the truck hitch mount. I had to then order the 28 inch long safety chains (2118-605-04). Etrailer processed the order and shipped the item promptly. The chains are well made from heavy stock. You can not go wrong if you place an order with Etrailer.

by:

Great prices and fast delivery. The quality of merchandise and price are very good. The website also provides very helpful technical information regarding lug pattern specifications. I will definitely be recommending etrailer to my friends.
Thanks! Great shopping experience, I will be back when it comes time to replace my utility trailer tires.

by:

Replaced a chain I had on a trailer that was underrated and it broke. Replaced it with this 5000lb safety chain and have had no problems at all. Thanks etrailer for having the right replacement products

by:

Excellent customer service!! Within an hour of placing my order I received an email stating the parts I ordered were not in stock, HOWEVER, they recommended another replacement part which was cheaper and BETTER!!! AND, received it within a couple of days!! Saved about $60.00! I have always been reluctant to order parts such as this online, (Trailer Hubs) These chains were also part of the order, however the hubs were the main purchase!! AWESOME experience!

by:

The trailer chain is not of good quality. After only about 6 trips to the water, the rust is appearing on both chains. I will need to replace them soon.

by:

AFTER A YEAR THE SAFETY CHAINS LOOK BRAND NEW AND WORK FINE. VERY PLEASED WITH ALL THE PRODUCTS I BOUGHT AT ETRAILER.COM.

by:

I was surprised to receive the chains in the mail so fast, I think it was within three days. Before buying from etrailer, I checked the price at my local L***'* building supply and this same product was about 1/4 % higher in cost, and it did not have the S hooks with it. I am also very satisfied with the quality of the chains.

by:

These hooks and chains were far superior to the original equip. I use them on my HD Dump trailer to hold the tail gate as I spread the crusher run. Works great ..no failures

by:

These safety chains are perfect for both my boat trailers. When installed they will give me that extra piece of mind while i'am heading to the lake for a weekend of fun.

by:

Probably overkill for my 14' Jon boat and stronger than the entire winch tower that its bolted to but it works. Pulling up the ramp is worry free.

by:

This 27" safety chain was a great replacement for the fraying cable that I had on my trailer previously. I could not buy the length of chain alone at this price. As usual my order arrived within days of when I ordered it. Thanks, etrailer.

  • Choosing a Ball Mount for 2013 Toyota Venza with Class III Trailer Hitch to Tow Boat Trailer
A Class III ball mount is a great option for you with the Class III trailer hitch installed on your 2013 Toyota Venza. Since your boat trailer has a 2 inch coupler, you will certainly want a hitch ball that has a 2 inch diameter ball in order to seat the coupler properly. Another thing to consider when choosing a ball mount is the height of the hitch receiver and the height of the trailer coupler. You will want to choose a ball mount that will allow you to tow the trailer level. The...

  • Weld On Safety Chain Retainer
You should not weld the chain directly to the trailer. There is no federal law about weight or size rating on safety chains. You will need to check with your local DMV office for the requirements in your state. If you are needing a mounting point for safety chains I recommend the Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer For 5/16" Chain item # 3375471000. It has a removable clevis pin for ease of painting and chain replacement. Each retainer is rated to 10,000 lbs. They are sold individually...

The 27 inch overall length of the Long Safety Chain, # 2118-605-04, includes the hook. I pulled the chain from our warehouse and found that the chain portion measures 25 inches. We do offer longer chains if you are interested. I have attached a link to all of our safety chains for you to check out.

  • Compatible Quick Links, Safety Chains, and Chain Loops for Adding Safety Chains to a Trailer
I pulled the quick links and quick loop that you referenced as well as the safety chains, # 2118-605-04, that you purchased and found that the best option for you will be the 3/8 Inch Quick Link, # 6590-044-04. This quick link will fit through the safety chain links and the safety chain loop. The measurement of the opening of the quick link is 0.48 inches (31/64 inches) which is slightly larger than the 7/16 inch diameter of your chain loops (see photo). • Is Brophy Safety Chain Mounting Bracket MB12 Compatible with Safety Chain 2118-605-04
The hook end of chain # 2118-605-04 will fit mount # MB12 but the opening in the chain links is too narrow for MB12 to fit. You would need chain # 1483-535-04. I tested this chain and the MB12 and they will work together. Or you could go with an S-hook with a keeper on it like # C81820 and securely hook onto the MB12.

  • What is the Inside Width of the Links of Laclede Safety Chain
I went out to the warehouse and measured the inside width of the Laclede 27" Long Safety Chain with 7/16" Hook, part # 2118-605-04, that you referenced. The link's inside width is 1/2". I also tried to put a 1/2" bolt through it and found you cannot. Check out the picture I made at right. For a safety chain with links with an inside width of 9/16" that will accommodate a 1/2" bolt you can use # 1483-535-04.

  • Availability of Longer Trailer Safety Chain with 5/16 inch Diameter
For a safety chain with a 3/8 inch diameter that is 42 inches long the part # 63451 would be a great option. These use clevis style hooks instead of S-hooks as this is a higher capacity chain where this style of connector is typically seen. I attached a review video for you to check out as well.

  • Best Way to Get Longer Safety Chains on a Trailer
You can try using quick-links to add length to your safety chains, but your best option is going to be to use a different set of chains that are longer. For a 27 inch long chain rated at 5K, go with the # 2118-605-04. For a 48 inch chain with the same capacity, use part # 2118-348-04.

  • How to Choose Correct Capacity for Trailer Safety Chains
I definitely understand how safety chain capacities and determining exactly what chain rating you need for your trailer can be a bit confusing. To keep it as simple as possible, safety chain requirements state that the breaking strength of EACH chain, not the working load limit (WLL), should be equal to or exceed the gross trailer weight.A 5,000 pound trailer needs safety chains that each have a break strength of at least 5,000 pounds. A chain's working load limit comes more into play...

The Laclede Chain part # 2118-605-04 would be a great option. This has more capacity than you would need at 5,000 lbs and is 27 inches long. You'd need to order two of these.

Thank you for the photo of your utility trailer that appears to already have safety chains installed near the coupler. Safety chains should be selected based on trailer weight and on the length you need. If your trailer has a 3500-lb-rated axle then chains like 60-inch 5K Curt part # C19749 would provide sufficient capacity and their latching hooks will make for easy attachment. • Are Safety Chains Required When Towing a Trailer or is the Hitch Ball and Trailer Coupler Enough
When towing a trailer, you will always need safety chains or cables as required by law. This is so if the trailer coupler pops off the ball on your step bumper for some reason, it is still connected to the tow vehicle via the safety chains or cables until you can stop and remedy the problem. I recommend getting a couple of 27 inch Long Safety Chains with 11/16 inch Hook, # 2118-605-04. With these chains installed, you will not have to worry about losing your trailer or getting a ticket! You will want your safety chains to at least match the gross trailer weight but preferably you will go over that. Safety chain # 2118-605-04 is rated for 5000 pounds breaking strength so it is definitely enough for your PWC trailer. But you can't beat the price for the capacity. A good rule of thumb is to take the breaking strength, in this case 5,000 pounds, and divide by 3. If the result is still greater than the gross trailer weight, in this case 1,667 pounds, then it is safe to use. You...

  • Are Two Trailer Safety Chains Really Necessary
You do indeed need two safety chains. When the safety chains are attached to the tow vehicle, they should be crossed below the coupler in an X pattern. This is done so that if the coupler should come off of the trailer ball, the crossed safety chains can provide a cradle for the coupler to land in. This will keep the coupler from hitting the ground and possibly getting snagged in a pothole, which would be a very very bad thing.

One way to determine the length you will need is to connect your trailer to your tow vehicle, back your trailer up into a near jack-knife position and then use a rope to go from the safety chain attachment points of your trailer to your tow vehicle.
