Video Transcript for Review of Fulton Safety Chains and Cables - Safety Chains - FCHA0050324

Today we're taking a look at a safety chain with the attached clevis hook, so that's included. Now, safety chains are designed to help ensure safe towing. They simply provide a backup connection between your trailer and the vehicle that the trailers being towed by. So right here we have the clevis hook on the end, it has a pin and a clip so it connects to the link right there. So the clevis hook on the end connects to a safety chain loop on the truck and then the other end of the chain would connect to your trailer. You can bolt it, you can weld it, whatever application works best for you and then you would connect the chain from the trailer to the vehicle and again, it provides that backup connection between the trailer and the tow vehicle.

So, if your coupler we're to fail and if the trailer we're to disconnect, this chain would keep it connected lounger for you to be able to pull over and address the issue. On the actual clevis hook, we have a safety latch mechanism. This is designed to prevent accidental disconnecting, that's a spring-loaded design. Now, one chain is included with this part number, just kind of a general rule of thumb, you definitely want to have two chains. Now some chains are long enough to where you can actually make two out of one, but in this case this one measures 42 inches overall length, so you definitely want to pick up another one. Weight capacity is 18,800 pounds, it has a really nice yellow zinc finish to resist rust and corrosion, it's a grade 70 chain so it's very strong, very durable and it is J684.6.3.4 SAE compliant.

Again, overall length with the hook is 42 inches and the actual chain link diameter is 5/16ths of an inch. That's going to do it for today's look at the safety chain with the included clevis hook.

Towed a sailboat (6000 lbs) on trailer (~1500 lbs) from Missouri to Colorado with a 1/2 Ton chevy pickup. Did great, no sway, no issues whatsoever. Installation was straightforward and done in the boat yard with limited tools without any trouble at all. We didn't put the boat on the trailer and had no opportunity to adjust the weight distribution. No problems at all. I definitely can recommend this hitch setup. 485446

great product, however it does not have a load test tag or shackles for attaching to gooseneck. No way to positively identify strength of chain or hook, but it sure look pretty. 480038

Ask the Experts about this Fulton Trailer Safety Chains

  • Is Hook for Fulton 18.8K Safety Chain with Clevis Hook Grade 70
I reached out to my contact at Fulton who said he wasn't able to find a specific rating for the hook part of the Safety Chain with Clevis Hook # FCHA0050324, but he said that they do make sure that the hook meets or exceeds the grade of the chains links so since the chain links are a grade 70 you can be confident that the hook will be just as strong, if not stronger.

  • What is Weight Capacity of Tow Ready Safety Chain Kit # 49150
We don't rate the Fulton chains we offer like the part # FCHA0050324 that you mentioned. Fulton is who tested and rated the chains for 18,800 lbs. They are normally very conservative with how they rate their chains and towing products and we've yet to have any issues with that so I'd feel very confident in the 18.8k capacity.

  • Dimensions of the Links of the 18,800 lb Fulton Safety Chain FCHA0050324
The diameter of the links of the Safety Chain # FCHA0050324 that you referenced are 5/16 of an inch. I went out to our warehouse to measure the length and width of each link and found them to be 2 inches long and 1-1/8 inches wide.

  • How To Choose New Safety Chains, Breakaway, and Coupler for Gooseneck Trailer
In order to choose the correct set of safety chains you will need to choose a set that has the length you need as well as the weight capacity which should exceed the weight of your trailer. The Safety Chain with Clevis Hook part # FCHA0050324 (2) is 42" long and would give you a 18,800 lb weight capacity. In regards to the weight of the trailer, this would be listed as gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and is the amount that the trailer can weigh fully loaded. If you don't know the gross...

  • Safety Chain Mounts to Weld to a Trailer
We have several different safety chain attachment brackets you could potentially use. I have included a link to them for you. It sounds like you are looking for something like # MB38. Keep in mind that this is raw steel. Welding to a dissimilar metal requires a professional, especially if the other metal is galvanized or zinc-coated because that can give off toxic fumes!

  • How to Use Safety Chains on a Gooseneck Trailer
For a safety chain that will be sufficient for most gooseneck trailers I really like the Fulton Safety Chain with Clevis Hook part # FCHA0050324. This safety chain has a grade 70 rating with large clevis hook. You will need two of them for your trailer. The end opposite of the clevis hook will attach to the nose of a trailer via a bolt and the clevis hook will attach to the gooseneck hitch you have in your truck bed. Almost all gooseneck hitches will have a set of holes that can be used...

  • How is the 18,800 lb Capacity of the Fulton Safety Chains FCHA0050324 Determined
The 18.8k capacity for the # FCHA0050324 that you referenced is listed as the GTW or gross trailer weight. This chain can be used on a trailer that weighs up to 18,800 lbs. The working load limit is a different capacity that would be more relevant for using the chain to secure cargo. Since in the event of a trailer coming un coupled the chains would not have 18,800 lbs put on them, since the road supports the total weight of the trailer, You would not need a chain with a working load...

I am not sure what Curt safety chains you may be referring to, but the Fulton safety chain part # FCHA0050324 would be a great option. This is a 42 inch long chain that has a 18,800 lb capacity which works great for heavy campers like yours.

  • Recommended Safety Chains for a 1998 Jayco Travel Trailer
I do have an option but we do not have any way for you to safely add onto your existing chains. It would be difficult to match the grade and construction of the chain as well so it will be better to just replace them altogether. For this, I recommend using the Safety Chain with Clevis Hook part # FCHA0050324. These chains measure to be 42" long. If you have any excess you can just loop them around one another to get rid of any slack. The strength of the chain has to do with the grade...

  • Is Weight Rating Stamped Onto Fulton Safety Chain # FCHA0050324
The Fulton Safety Chain with Clevis Hook # FCHA0050324 referenced in your question features a weight capacity of 18,800 pounds. I went out to our warehouse to take a look at the chains and found that this particular rating is not stamped onto the chain or hook itself, nor is there a tag with this information. Its grade 70 designation is however stamped onto the links. I have attached a short video demonstration on this chain that you can also check out.

  • Safety Chains with Clevis Hooks and Quick Links for an 8,700 Pound Trailer
How about 2 of Fulton Chain # FCHA0050324 and 2 of Safety Chain Quick Link # 49135. The chains are 42 inches long overall and rated for 18,800 pounds with a zinc coating to resist corrosion. The quick links have a break strength of 10,000 pounds. Based on what you are looking for this is going to be the best option.

  • Safety Chains to Use with 20,000 Pound Goose Box
For a safety chain with a higher capacity than the # 49150 I recommend part # FCHA0050324 which is rated up to 18,800 pounds. This is only one chain so you need two of them but the rating is per chain so it's definitely enough for what you need. The # FCHA0050324 however does not include any hardware. To connect them to a Goose Box # RP94720 you need 1/2 washers, 1/2 inch nuts, 1/2-13x2.25 bolts, and 1/2 inch lock washers. You need 2 of each.
