Recessed-Mount Light

Recessed Grommet Mount Trailer Light Installation Diagram

Recessed-mount trailer lights install with a grommet, which is often sold separately. These lights extend past the trailer surface and require a hole for installation. If replacing a light, you can utilize the pre-existing hole. If installing a new light, you will need to cut a hole or use a mounting bracket (sold separately) to complete the installation.

Video Transcript for Peterson LumenX LED Trailer Tail Light Review and Installation

Randy: Hey, guys, it's Randy here at etrailer.com today. Today, we're going to be taking a look at a Peterson Lumenx LED light. This is a tail light. It's designed to work for your running lights or tail lights, also blinker and brakes. Now these lights are designed to fit the six inch oval grommet, which is very common and very popular in a lot of utility style trailers. The thing I like about this one the most is that it's completely weatherproof. With LED lights like this, we don't really necessarily have any bulbs and sockets, or anything like that, to deal with, so they can seal up the back of that light, make sure no moisture gets into this housing at all and causes us issues.

Now this one's a 10 LED design. So, we got our 10 LEDs there. Nice crystal clear, bright light. That's what I like about these led lights. They tend to give off a really nice light. And this is designed to work with 12 or 24 volt systems.

Now, if you just want a 12 volt style light, we also have this one available with seven diodes in it. They're just in a straight line there. Also a good option. Does a great job. But this one is going to work for the 12 and 24.

So, this would be your go-to with the 24 volt system for sure. Now, in addition to that cleaner and brighter light that we get out of the LED type, they are also going to last much longer than the incandescent and they don't use as much power. You can see we've got a lot of LED lights on this trailer and it doesn't draw all that much power through our vehicle's lighting system, which I really like.I think LEDs are definitely the way to go. They're going to make it to where you're not chasing wires all the time when you go to hook up to your trailer. You plug it in and this light's not working, or that light's not working. It just really eliminates a lot of that.

With the exception of some wiring issues you might have, you're not really going to have to worry about that bulb and socket, and if it's connected properly, or if it's corroded. Now, as we said, this is going to fit into the standard six inch grommet. Gives it a nice, almost like a shock absorber on our light there to keep it from getting it rattled around too much. If yours is dried up, or if it's cracked, or if it's just not usable anymore, we do offer these on etrailer.com. So, just pick up a set when you get your tail lights set. That way it'll go in there nice and easily for you.And the pigtail on the back is a common across the board type of pigtail. It's a three wired pigtail design. During the installation, we'll talk to you about what each of the wires are for. And we also have those available. So, if you're going to be switching them out and you don't have those pigtails, it's a great opportunity to upgrade your trailer and get those in place. To get our new light installed, of course, we need to get our old one out of the way. Basically all of these lights fit into the same size grommet. So, if your grommet's in good shape, you're just going to pop out your old one, pop in your new one. Well, a lot of times with these, if you have access to the back. I'm just going to push out from the back, do one side first, then the other. You see them pop out of there pretty good. And likely, because most of these do use the same one. I'm going to use this to get it off. You're going to have this kind of plug on the back already. And if your light's working out fine, that's awesome, because all we have to do is now plug this into our new light. Now, if you don't have this plug, we have this pigtail available on our website. It's going to have three wires coming off the back of it.You're going to have a white that needs to go to a ground source. You're going to have a red. That'll go to your turn and to your brake light. That's our yellow wire here. And then you'll have a black and that's going to go to your running light signal. So, it's a pretty straightforward installation. And now we can just take our new light and we'll just be plugging it right in. Get them lined up. Doesn't take a lot of pressure, so just make sure you're getting it in the right spot there. It should go down and seat just like that.At that point, we'll start one side. Just gently push on that other. That's all there is to it. And we'll test them out and make sure they're working properly. Now to run your test, you can simply plug it into your vehicle. We're just going to use our trailer tester here. We'll start by turning on those tail lights. And we'll check our left turn signal, check out our brakes, and our right turn signal. With everything working properly, we're ready to hit the road. Overall, guys, I highly recommend this light. I think it's going to be something once it's installed, especially if you're going from incandescent to LEDs. You're just really not going to have to worry about anymore. They're going to work when you plug them in and turn them on. So, definitely something I would own and definitely something I would install on my trailer..

I used these to replace the tail lights on my utility trailer. They are bright and because they are LED they will not require any attention. I look forward to many years of reliable service.

Easy instillation and very bright. But you must be very thorough that you have the right sized grommet for the hole in the bed or trailer AND for the light you are using. Not all grommets are the same as with trailers and flat beds so make sure that you double check the hole size both ways of the bed and the light to minimize head aches when you go to install.
