Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of etrailer by AxleTek Trailer Axles - 2,200 LBS Leaf Spring Trailer Axle - e22GR

Hi there, I'm Michael, with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this trailer axle with idler hubs and easy grease spindles. Now obviously, a trailer axle is a super important component in your trailer's suspension system, so you wanna make sure that you're getting the right one for you. This is a one and three quarter inch diameter steel beam, so it's going to be very durable for you, it's gonna be great whether you're needing to replace an axle on your jet ski trailer, or a small travel trailer, or if you're wanting to build your own trailer, say like an off-road utility kind of trailer, this will do a great job for you as long as the weight capacity and the measurements, the length fits for your trailer. So let's go over those measurements. This is gonna have a maximum weight capacity of 2,200 pounds.

So it will work with your single axle 2,200 pound weight capacity trailers, or if you're using it in a double axle configuration, obviously that weight capacity will be doubled. And then the second component to make sure that this is gonna work for you is gonna be the length. So, we've got two different ways of measuring the length, the first is gonna be from our spring seats here. These are welded onto the axle, so it's gonna be nice and steady, solid reference point so that we can make sure that it's gonna fit for us. So from the center of one to the center of the other, it's gonna be right at 48 inches.

The second way to measure the length is gonna be from the hub face, so from the outside edge of one hub to the outside edge of the other, right on that flat portion, it's gonna be right at 60 inches. So make sure that that's gonna work for your trailer weight capacity, and the width of your trailer will fit those measurements, and you'll be good to go. So this does have the easy grease spindles on it, and you can see they are welded in place in a straight alignment. So there's no drop to them, whatever, whatsoever. They are welded on using a patented welding technique that's actually gonna make these about 40% stronger.

The welds will help to reduce the chance of spindle failure, so rather than just being welded up against the axle, the spindles are actually inside. So, it's gonna make them a lot stronger for you so you don't have to worry about that spindle failure. And then the easy grease portion is going to come into play with this grease zerk on the end here. And that's going to make it much easier for us to just hook up our grease gun, pump fresh grease in there, and make sure everything's going to be lubricated well in between our regular maintenance applications. Very simple to do, you'll have your cap in place, you can see the cap does have this plugged on it, so once you pop the plug off using a flathead screwdriver or something like that, it's gonna give you access to that grease zerk so you can easily just hook up your grease gun, pump some fresh grease through there, make sure everything's gonna stay nice and lubricated.

The idler hubs here are a six and one quarter inch diameter, so they are going to do a great job for those of you who have wheel that are 13 to 15 inches. The hub bolt pattern is five on four and a half inches, and these are a nice cast iron construction, so they are gonna be extremely durable and sturdy for you. All of the bearings, races, seals, and lug nuts are included. The bearings do come pre-packed so that you don't have to pack those bearings yourself before you get them all installed. So it's gonna save you a lot of mess and hassle, not having to pack those bearings that first time. Just get them all put together and then pump some extra grease through there and make sure that it's got plenty in there, and you'll be ready to go. Our spring seats, like I already talked about, they are welded in place. They are welded on the underside of our axle, that's going to allow us to mount our leaf springs in the underslung orientation. So that's gonna give us a lower ride height, which is gonna make it easier for us to load and unload our trailer. So, really nice option there having those welded on the bottom of the axle. This is CSA as well as QAI and SAE-N certified, so you can trust, it's gonna meet those high quality standards, it's gonna do a good job for you. It also comes with a limited lifetime warranty, as well as a lifetime technical support, guaranteed from our experts here at etrailer.com. So if you we're to ever have any problems with it, you're more than welcome to reach out to us, we're always happy to work with our customers. We like making sure that you're getting good quality products and having a good experience. So don't let that hold you back, we'll always be happy to work with you, but overall, I think this is gonna be a great option for you for those smaller trailers. Again, make sure that weight capacity and the length are gonna work for you, and I think you'll be very happy with it. So that's gonna complete our look for today, again, I'm Michael, with etrailer.com, thanks for watching..

Review from a similar etrailer Axle Beam w Hubs in Trailer Axles

Axle seems solid. "Pre-installed" bearings had to be put back in because they slid out easily when installing the hub on the axle. I also had to go out and purchase new cotter pins (both were installed to a point where removing them resulted in one breaking and not trusting the other) and dust caps were heavily dented. That said, axle came 2 days earlier so I got to fish more.

Ask the Experts about this etrailer Trailer Axles

  • Replacement Axle Needed For Motorcycle Trailer
Yes we have a number of axel options available, if you can identify what the current axle is that will be best for suggesting a replacement. I think it will be something similar to the Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs, # e22GR which is a very cost effective option. My guess is that you most likely have a bent/damaged spindle instead of a bent axle. However, frequently a better cost effective fix is to simply replace the axle with a new one that already has hubs. You get new axle, greased...
