Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

Slipper leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. The eye of this spring will attach to the front hanger with a suspension bolt. The flat slipper end of the spring will slide into the rear hanger. If you have a tandem- or triple-axle trailer, the slipper end will slide into the equalizer that connects multiple springs. The shape of the slipper end of a leaf spring may vary slightly due to differences among trailer manufacturers. Because of this, it's important to check your leaf spring's slipper end before purchasing a replacement spring.

To mount this spring, you will need hangers, a suspension bolt, and possibly a spring keeper bolt, depending on the design of the rear hanger. If you are simply replacing a spring, you may still have hangers welded onto your trailer, but it would be wise to replace the bolts as they can experience wear. It is also recommended that you replace the other leaf spring in your setup at the same time. Because springs can sag and elongate as they wear, this new spring may not exactly match the old one, and the alignment of your trailer could be affected.

If you are fabricating a trailer, you will need to purchase a hanger kit for installation. To determine the type of hanger kit that you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring that you have, as well as your axle capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications. Hangers and other suspension components can also be purchased separately if there isn't a complete kit that works for your setup.

Video Transcript for Review of Universal Group Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension - 5 Leaf Slipper Spring - UG54FR

Ellen: Hey everyone, I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com. We're going to be taking a quick look at the Five Leaf Slipper Spring with your radius end for your 10,000 pound axles. So this is a great addition to your trailer to make sure that you have that spring to take up any of that road shock and help to improve the overall ride. Also helps to reduce the amount of wear and tear on your trailer overall. It's a good idea to always replace the slipper springs or your leaf Springs in pairs. So you'll want to get an additional spring to this.

So you can replace both of those at the same time and for as many axles as you need to replace. So let's take a closer look at it and make sure that this is going to be the right fit for your particular application. So you can see it as a slipper type spring. So that's going to slip over the end of your hanger or your equalizer and provide that movement that you need as that axle travels. It does have the five leaf designs that helps to absorb a lot of that shock from the road and help to level things out and keeping things even on bumpy and uneven pavement. The other end here is going to be our radial end.

That's going to have our eye. It does have a bronze bushing already installed. So that's one less thing we have to do, but you do need to get a hanger kit or use pre mounted hangers to actually install this in place on your trailer. As far as the specs with this, again, it does have a spring capacity itself of 5,000 pounds. So it works with a 10,000 pound axle.

Whenever you have both of these, that'll get you to that 10,000 pounds. The length from the center of the eye to the end of the spring. So from the center here to the very end of the spring, it's going to be about 30 and a half inches, 30 inches and one half inch. Then the spring width is two and a half inches. The eye diameter with the bushing in place is three quarters of an inch. Without the bushing, it would be two inches.

The leaf thickness each one of these is seven 16ths of an inch. Again, we have five leaves it all, and if you need to see any additional measurements, we do have those listed out in a table on the product page at etrailer.com. That's pretty much it for our look at the Five Leaf Slipper Spring. I hope this has been helpful in deciding if this is going to be the right piece for you. We do have a lot of other accessories, including hangers and equalizers here at etrailer.com. So if you need to pick those up, check us out. Thanks for watching.

Ask the Experts about this Universal Group Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

  • Is There a 28" Long Trailer Leaf Spring
The two closest leaf spring options we have for you are 29-1/2" and 27"long. That said, leaf springs need to be measured unloaded and the exact point will vary by spring type. I would also like to note that leaf springs stretch over time. The 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles part # SP-210275 for example measures 27" long. If you can give me the type of spring you need along with capacity, I would be glad to see if I can offer a more exact recommendation but I have also...

  • Differences Between Universal Group 5-Leaf Leaf Springs and Recommended U-Bolt Kit for 5 Inch Axle
The only difference that I'm seeing between the 5-Leaf Slipper Springs w/ Radius End for 10,000-lb Trailer Axles - 30-1/2" Long # SP-252275 and # UG54FR is that the UG54FR has about an inch thicker cushion where the bolt installs in the eye. Sometimes demand and popularity play a role in the pricing of things online in general so I imagine that has a bit to do with it since these are practically the same exact thing. I would go with the more cost-effective leaf spring in your case. We do...
