Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

Slipper leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. The eye of this spring will attach to the front hanger with a suspension bolt. The flat slipper end of the spring will slide into the rear hanger. If you have a tandem- or triple-axle trailer, the slipper end will slide into the equalizer that connects multiple springs. The shape of the slipper end of a leaf spring may vary slightly due to differences among trailer manufacturers. Because of this, it's important to check your leaf spring's slipper end before purchasing a replacement spring.

To mount this spring, you will need hangers, a suspension bolt, and possibly a spring keeper bolt, depending on the design of the rear hanger. If you are simply replacing a spring, you may still have hangers welded onto your trailer, but it would be wise to replace the bolts as they can experience wear. It is also recommended that you replace the other leaf spring in your setup at the same time. Because springs can sag and elongate as they wear, this new spring may not exactly match the old one, and the alignment of your trailer could be affected.

If you are fabricating a trailer, you will need to purchase a hanger kit for installation. To determine the type of hanger kit that you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring that you have, as well as your axle capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications. Hangers and other suspension components can also be purchased separately if there isn't a complete kit that works for your setup.

Video Transcript for Universal Group Trailer Suspension - Leaf Spring Suspension - SP-178275 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the three leaf slipper spring for 1500 pound trailer axles. The spring's made from a very strong and durable steel construction. It's going to flex appropriately to absorb road shock and provide a nice smooth ride. Ultimately, this is going to help reduce wear and tear on your trailer. It's going to help ensure a level ride on bumpy and uneven surfaces. These are designed to mount to the trailer frame with hangers or a hanger kit. Those items are sold separately.

If you are in need of a hanger or a hanger kit, you can find those items here at etrailer.com. Over here at the eye, it does include a nylon bushing. The eye diameter's going to measure 9/16 of an inch. You can see this as a three leaf spring, so it's going to contain three leaves. The spring width form edge to edge is 1 and 3/4 of an inch. Eye diameter's 9/16.

When it comes to the spring capacity, it's going to have a capacity itself of 750 pounds, so it's designed for a 1500 pound axle, that would be the axle capacity if you're using two of these. I want to give you the spring length measurement. From the center of the eye to the very end of the spring. That's going to give us a measurement of about 24 and 5/8 of an inch. If we measure from the center of the spring to the top of the bend here on this end, that's going to give us a measurement of around 23 inches. Please keep in mind that in order to ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs. That's going to do it for today's look at the three leaf slipper spring for 1500 pound trailer axles..

Replaced rusty springs on a 14' skiff trailer. Fit perfect, DIY for cheap in the driveway, it would've been easier with an impact wrench. Take their advice, etrailer is the best for a reason, get ALL NEW HARDWARE TOO!! I broke several fasteners removing them, if the springs are bad, so is the hardware. I have done three hitches and a set of leaf springs now with these folks. Their install videos and expert advice made it a breeze to save probably a couple thousand in labor at a shop. 458343

I was assisted by Nick and Katie of etrailer. Both were knowledgeable and helped me spec exactly what I needed. Slip springs and accessories for a trailer that is no longer made. Great attitudes and genuinely friendly to boot. The two of them are exactly what we all hope to get when we need factory help on the phone. This is my third order from etrailer. nuff said! 168954

I have an old 1993 NUWAY 13848 utility trailer and on a cross country trip, my leaf spring broke after hitting a pot hole. I was lucky to make it home safely. E-trailer had replacement spring in various load ratings. My original trailer was a 2 leaf spring rated for 500 lbs (1000 for trailer). E-trailer has springs that were 3 leaf rated for 750 lbs (1500 for trailer). The price was great and the delivery was super fast. Springs wear out from a lot of use and it is best to replace them especially after hitting pot holes for 25 years and 20,000 miles with trailer loaded at 60 to 90% capacity. An old spring may look good but has a limited life with years of use. Oh yes, I replaced both sides and the nuts on the U bolts are fully engaged and torqued. Replacement parts all fit perfectly. I am glad "etrailer" carries everything you need at a super great price. 586601

The leaf springs arrived quickly and in good condition. They installed easily on a 17' long boat trailer and I think they will work well on the road. The boat and trailer are in storage for the off season now but I expect that the weight of a 13' Boston Whaler, 25 hp Suzuki four stroke, and boat gear will be a reasonable load for the leaf springs to perform properly. My only concern is corrosion resistance. There was some evidence of surface rust coming through the paint on the springs in some places. I'm hopeful they don't rust out too quickly. 580684

I bought these springs for my dads trailer after one of the originals broke out on the road and caused one of the tires to be shredded from the fender. Good quality, and have been on trailer about a year now and are still in great condition. I did repaint them for a little more protection, but that is up to you as they are pre-painted. Do you have a question about this Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension?

  • Replacement Slipper Springs for 1985 Harding Boat Trailer
  • I do have options for you but exact replacements for old boat trailers are hard to come by. In the majority of cases, items will need to be altered for an exact fit which I assume is what is going to need to be done on your trailer as well. We don't have a slipper spring that is 1-3/4" wide x 28" long (center of eye to end of spring) with a 2,500, 3,000, or 3,500 lb capacity. However, leaf springs will fatten out over time which means the leaf spring that was originally installed on the...

  • Leaf Spring Recommendation for Trailer with Slippers Springs that are 24-7/8 inches
  • When picking out leaf springs there are two important things needed. You first need to get a spring that is rated for the weight of your trailer and then get one that is the proper length. Since you sent us a drawing that shows your slipper springs being 24-7/8 inches in length what you would need to do is determine what axle capacity you need. For a 2k axle you would need is the part # SP-179275 or for 1k axle part # SP-177275. Or for 1,500 lb axle you would need part # SP-178275.

Sounds like you are considering going with the # SP-178275 over the # SP-177275 for your trailer.
