Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

Slipper leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. The eye of this spring will attach to the front hanger with a suspension bolt. The flat slipper end of the spring will slide into the rear hanger. If you have a tandem- or triple-axle trailer, the slipper end will slide into the equalizer that connects multiple springs. The shape of the slipper end of a leaf spring may vary slightly due to differences among trailer manufacturers. Because of this, it's important to check your leaf spring's slipper end before purchasing a replacement spring.

To mount this spring, you will need hangers, a suspension bolt, and possibly a spring keeper bolt, depending on the design of the rear hanger. If you are simply replacing a spring, you may still have hangers welded onto your trailer, but it would be wise to replace the bolts as they can experience wear. It is also recommended that you replace the other leaf spring in your setup at the same time. Because springs can sag and elongate as they wear, this new spring may not exactly match the old one, and the alignment of your trailer could be affected.

If you are fabricating a trailer, you will need to purchase a hanger kit for installation. To determine the type of hanger kit that you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring that you have, as well as your axle capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications. Hangers and other suspension components can also be purchased separately if there isn't a complete kit that works for your setup.

I have an old 1993 NUWAY 13848 utility trailer and on a cross country trip, my leaf spring broke after hitting a pot hole. I was lucky to make it home safely. E-trailer had replacement spring in various load ratings. My original trailer was a 2 leaf spring rated for 500 lbs (1000 for trailer). E-trailer has springs that were 3 leaf rated for 750 lbs (1500 for trailer). The price was great and the delivery was super fast. Springs wear out from a lot of use and it is best to replace them especially after hitting pot holes for 25 years and 20,000 miles with trailer loaded at 60 to 90% capacity. An old spring may look good but has a limited life with years of use. Oh yes, I replaced both sides and the nuts on the U bolts are fully engaged and torqued. Replacement parts all fit perfectly. I am glad "etrailer" carries everything you need at a super great price.

Came quickly, was exactly what I needed to replace a broken spring on a 1500lb carry on trailer.

by:

I was assisted by Nick and Katie of etrailer. Both were knowledgeable and helped me spec exactly what I needed. Slip springs and accessories for a trailer that is no longer made. Great attitudes and genuinely friendly to boot. The two of them are exactly what we all hope to get when we need factory help on the phone. This is my third order from etrailer. nuff said!

Replaced rusty springs on a 14' skiff trailer. Fit perfect, DIY for cheap in the driveway, it would've been easier with an impact wrench. Take their advice, etrailer is the best for a reason, get ALL NEW HARDWARE TOO!! I broke several fasteners removing them, if the springs are bad, so is the hardware. I have done three hitches and a set of leaf springs now with these folks. Their install videos and expert advice made it a breeze to save probably a couple thousand in labor at a shop.

by:

Purchased this in pair for my new to me kayak trailer and they are awesome. The ones that came with my trailer were rusted bad and two leafs only. These are three leafs giving it more load capacity and way cheaper then any of my local big box stores and trailer parts store here in Miami FL. If you need a pair for your trailer do not hesitate and contact etrailer their awesome website and outstanding customer service will get you what you need trust me this is my second time purchasing with them and they have earn my two small trailer business. Oh and if you are not sure about what you need just contact them. Mr. Jameson C helped me, he send me all the details and links of what I needed with details that's CUSTOMER SERVICE thank you guys God bless....

by:

While I haven't tried it yet (naturally I require additional parts, not etrailers fault, I broke a couple of bolts.) The springs arrived faster than promised and fit perfectly.

Trailers are just coming to market this spring in power sports dealers in the Midwest.

Ordered early Friday morning before business hours. Parts arrived the following Wensday afternoon via UPS.

The only concern I had with the two springs I ordered was the cheap nylon bushing they came with. I would have preferred neoprene but the springs were stamped made in China so......

Springs and hanger kit I ordered went together and look good.

by:

Exactly what I thought it would be. Worked great.

by:

Good fit, installed easily.

by:

Fast shipping (to Alaska even) and quality product. Thx!

Exactly what I needed

by:

Teresa took my order over the phone and did a great job helping me get the right leaf springs for my boat trailer. She also upgraded my shipping for free and my parts got delivered faster! Thank you Teresa!

by:

The leaf springs arrived quickly and in good condition. They installed easily on a 17' long boat trailer and I think they will work well on the road. The boat and trailer are in storage for the off season now but I expect that the weight of a 13' Boston Whaler, 25 hp Suzuki four stroke, and boat gear will be a reasonable load for the leaf springs to perform properly. My only concern is corrosion resistance. There was some evidence of surface rust coming through the paint on the springs in some places. I'm hopeful they don't rust out too quickly.

by:

Spring fit and finish great. Correct dimension and install was easy. U-bolt kit also great. Prices were great. Shipping quick and fair. Thanks.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Bounce on a Triple Axle Trailer
There are a couple things that you can do that will help with the sway and bounce on your trailer when you are pulling it with your vehicle. The first thing you can try to do is tow the trailer level. If the tongue on the trailer is high, then the trailer will not have as much stability if it were level. I attached an FAQ article on picking out the correct rise/drop ball mount so that you can tow level. Another thing you can check is the suspension of the trailer. Worn out components...

The trailer suspension leaf springs that we carry, including # SP-178275 are sold individually. When replacing springs though you will always want to replace all of them at the same time. I have linked a video of this spring and a link to our help article on slipper spring suspension.

  • 1,500 lb Slipper Springs or 1,000 lb Slipper Springs for a Trailer
The best way to pick out a slipper spring replacement for a trailer is to base it off of the weight capacity for the trailer and then the dimension of the spring getting replaced. Sounds like you are considering going with the # SP-178275 over the # SP-177275 for your trailer. Both of these springs share the same dimensions, but since your old springs seem to be too soft it would seem like the # SP-178275 would be a better choice. Which in your case could be the 1,000 lb leaf springs. So basically you should be able to improve the ride quality of your trailer by going to a 1,000 lb rated spring like the # SP-177275 but you would sacrifice weight capacity.
