Video Transcript for TruRyde Trailer Suspension TRSL350 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at a 3 1/2 inch long shackle strap. This shackle strap connects a double eye spring to a rear hanger on a single axle trailer or to an equalizer on a multi-axle trailer. It simply allows the appropriate movement to take place. It's made from durable steel with protective finishing to keep it safe from rust and corrosion. Shackle strap lengths are measured from the center of one mount hole to the center of the other. So if we place a ruler on there, you can see that center on center, we get a measurement of 3 1/2 inches. And if we take a measurement of the overall length, measuring edge to edge we get a measurement of 4 3/4 inches.

Edge to edge going this direction is an inch and a quarter. Thickness is 3/16 of an inch thick. And then the bolt hole diameter for each one is 9/16 of an inch. That's going to do it for today's look at the 3 1/2 inch long shackle strap.

Thought these might work but too short for the intended application. I needed a longer shackle to improve the clearance for the tire from the fender wheel well.

The shackle and bolts fixed my problem .Original shackle had pointed or right angle corner and the trailer hung up.
The new shackle had a radius corner and didn't catch the frame.
Works great

Good value for the price. Started rusting within days of installation so take the time to rattle can if you hate rust like I do!

I have attached a rust prevention help article with some tips in it:

Just what I ordered. All installed and doing its job.

Still working just like its supposed to.
David - 06/05/2022

Purchased replacement springs, equalizers, shackles and all the needed hardware to put it all together for my tandem axle boat trailer. While I was trying to figure out all the parts I needed on-line, I made a couple calls to etrailer's customer service and they were awesome! Parts arrived quickly and are exactly what I needed. I put together one of the spring / equalizer / spring set-ups and placed it on the trailer frame to confirm fit. Perfect! Looking forward to swapping all the parts out this weekend. And I'll be shopping with etrailer again soon to get a trailer hitch for my new Durango!
Thanks etrailer!

Everything was what was expected and the delivery was on time. I will always look to etrailer for my trailer parts. I built a trailer from scratch and it was etrailer that helped build it.

Well made and should be able to handle the load. Dimensions are as advertised.

I wish the shackle bolts came out as easy as ordering the parts!!!!
Jean at etrailer made it simple, answered all my questions and advised on some other items I would need to complete the job.
The parts arrived quick and everything was there. The shackle straps were heavy duty not light metal junk. The bolts and springs were also of the same quality.
Etrailer is trailers I highly recommend them you won't be disappointed.
Thanks again Jean.

So far so good never realized my old springs were so bad till I installed Etrailers parts. Thanks again, Paul S

I can't say enough good things about the product or service. The order was shipped within a couple of hours of being placed and arrived 3 days early. This was important because I was stranded far from home. The sales help was great. The new leaf springs really improved how the trailer feels on the road. The picture is of my sheep wagon trailer at my hideaway in New Mexico after driving 1900 miles including highway speeds of 75 mph as well as crawling up jeep trails in four wheel low, the new springs took it all in stride.

No problems at all. Since I last commented I have taken it to California, numerous trips around California, to Idaho and back. I spend a lot of time on washboard gravel and dirt roads. Last week I had the tires replace and the springs looked perfect.
Dave H - 04/23/2015

These are very solid steel. But I didn't order them to use as spring shackles, but for steel straps such as for the bottom side of a U bolt. I also needed to replace a tongue jack mounting bracket but didn't want to buy an entire mounting kit (as suggested by an etrailer "expert") so I used this instead. You can see by the attached photo that they do a better job of mounting the tongue jack by not hanging down below the trailer tongue as the factory brackets do. But they do need to be painted--which is no problem since the zinc coated ones would also need paint eventually (unless you don't mind the rust). I bought several in various sizes for mounting stuff to my trailer tongues and for other projects.

Shipping was very fast I’m very happy with how fast my order was processed. They’re steel straps with holes in the right spot. Not much else to them but only thing that will work when you need them.

Even with the product taking almost a month to arrive I gave Etrailer 5 stars... UPS lost my package and never admitted to it saying that it was USPS’s fault. Karen, at Etrailer, was very helpful with contacting UPS to try and figure out what happened, and ultimately re-shipping the items. After they arrived, they bolted directly to my existing enclosed trailer with no problem. Thanks again Karen!

Needed to raise my frame on a pontoon trailer for a little more tire to fender clearance. Going from a 2" shackle strap to this 3 1/2" worked perfect. Good quality and shipped fast.

It was easy to order the parts, they came as predicted and it was an easy installation. Thanks for having the 3.5" shackles available when I needed them.

You are the first person or company that has asked how things worked out after use for some time. What an exceptional idea and likely good for understanding any real issues with the item. In this case the shackles gave me the extra 14 ground clearance that I needed and I have had no more problems with tires hitting the fender on off road driving. They were install on a small 10 home made enclosed trailer.

Great product, work like a champ. Excellent machining standards allowed for easy install. End result is more clearance in the wheel well.

Work great, hauled many heavy loads with no issues . Recommend

by: has made the repair of my trailer very easy for me by supplying me with high quality parts at reasonable prices. They packaged the parts carefully and shipped quickly. I will no longer look anywhere else when I need trailer parts. This is a one stop and shop great place to do business. Thank You Etrailer, Dave

The old and new. Got over 12 years from the first ones.

Bought these to raise the trailer a touch. Easy to install. Fast shipping & response. Also bought new bolts 7 locknuts. Bought new bushings just in case but didn't need them. Well satisfied with my purchase.

This worked perfectly as I needed an additional inch of clearance between my fender and tire.

My fender was not able to be moved higher and I didn't want the height that an axle spring flip creates.

My old straps were just over 2" and this gave my exactly one inch of rise.

product was great problem was as I measured 3 1/2 and needed 2 1/2 I would have reordered but I needed to get job it cost me $10. at tractor bad...the bolts were fine tho and now I am back on the road....

Hello etrailer; Previously I mistakenly ordered the wrong size. I called and CAROL C. found the correct item in a matter of minutes and followed thru with getting it shipped that same afternoon. Thank you Carol for your professionalism and knowledge of products. [ ]

No problems. All four were made to good tolerances. Much heavier than the one I took off the trailer.

Product has held up well, no problems at the one year mark.
John L - 07/02/2014

I needed a shackle strap that was slightly longer to enable the tires to clear the fenders better. This one worked great.

The spring shackles that I ordered from Etrailer a year ago are holding up just fine and have met my epectations

All items received on time and appear to be of quality material. Prices were excellent; best I could find. Install videos are a great idea. And customer assistance is very helpful when calling and asking questions; they actually will research the answer to make sure it is correct, or as correct as humanly possible.

  • Are Shackles Supposed To Move Freely and Can They Flip The Wrong Way
The shackles on suspension systems like part # TRSL350 are designed to be fairly loose because the equalizer on your trailer suspension needs to be able to move without binding. The best thing to do when tightening down shackle bolts is to use lock nuts, tighten them until they are snug, then back them off 1/4 turn. It is possible that the shackle can flip into the wrong direction however most of the time putting weight on the trailer is enough to correct it or you can jack up the trailer...

Shackle straps that are 5-1/4 inches center on center is very long. The longest we carry is only 3-1/2 inches, part # TRSL350. I recommending replacing the ones you have with shorter straps.

  • Recommendation For Keeping Shackles From Flipping Up On Uneven Terrain
Longer hangers will not prevent the shackles from flipping. If this has always happened or if the springs are new then they are too short. If it happens only when your trailer is empty then not enough weight/tension to keep shackles in place so they flip. This happens normally when the trailer is unloaded. If this is a new/recent occurrence then something-shackle straps, equalizer holes, etc- has worn out and needs to replaced. If it's a shackle issue, you will need to measure from...

  • Fender Placement Consideration When Upgrading Axles on Trailer
Fender placement is going to depend on the specific application. There isn't a set amount you would need to move it when going to higher rated axles. You will need to consider the taller rims and tires you will be using plus the deflection of the suspension when it compresses. In most cases spring deflection is 1-1/2 inches when it is at capacity. You should note that when going to higher rated axles you don't necessarily raise the total capacity of the trailer. The capacity of a trailer...

The longest shackle straps we offer are part # TRSL350, and those measure 3-1/2 inches hole center to hole center. For more clearance you may want to install longer hangers. Although these may be a lot more work because you would have to remove the old hangers and then weld new hangers in place, they may give you the length you need to move the wheels away from the fenders. I have attached a link to out product page of the hangers we offer. You can use the menu at the left of the page...

  • Selecting Replacement Shackle Straps for 30-Foot Toy Hauler Trailer
Shackle straps are the most wear-prone part of a trailer suspension since they both carry weight and receive constant friction from the motion of the suspension. Shackle straps do not carry specific weight capacities, unlike the leaf springs they suspend. To select replacements all you need to do is match their length. Shackle straps are available in three lengths, 3-1/8-inch (single axle systems), 2-5/8-inch (tandem and triple axle trailers) and 2-1/4-inch, the most common length for...

  • Can 3-1/2" Shackles Replace 3-1/4" Shackles On Boat Trailer?
Since your hangers are the same size you will just want to match the new shackles to your original shackles as that is how the suspension was setup from the manufacturer. With that said since there is only a 1/4" difference between the original3-1/4" shackles and the new 3-1/2" shackles like the # TRSL350 you purchased you won't have any issues. I included a video of the # TRSL350 for you to take a look at.

  • Shackle Straps Are Flipping on Tandem Axle Trailer
Shackle links can flip when the trailer is unloaded since there isn't enough weight to keep them in proper position, and while a new, shorter equalizer may help, the easiest thing to check is the shackle links. Shackles that are too short can cause them to flip, so the best thing to check first is the length of your shackles, and replace them with longer ones if possible. You'll want to measure from center to center of the bolt holes to check their length, and replace them with one of...

We only have the # TRSL350 for a shackle that is 3-1/2 inches long from hole center to hole center. Typically these don't wear out as quickly as you described. Are you tightening the shackle bolts really tight which is causing added friction possibly? There is no specific torque rating for shackle bolts. You'll want to ensure that the bolts you use are long enough so that when installed you will have at least 2 threads protruding from the nut. Make sure that the bolt you're using has...

This is the first time I have heard of this issue but if a 5-leaf spring is the fix then we may have something that will work depending on the measurements you will need. When measuring springs you will need to have the weight off of them by either removing a spring or jacking up one side of the trailer so no weight is on that one side. Spring # SP-111275 is the only 5-leaf double-eye spring that we carry. It measures 25-1/4 inches from spring eye center to spring eye center and 3 inches...

  • Fender Clearance Problem on a 3,500 Lbs Tandem Axle Trailer with Double Eye Springs
It sounds like you definitely need to make a change in the trailer suspension. Longer hangers may help but, if the springs are worn out, changing the hangers would not fix the real issue. Installing longer shackle straps would make the issue worse. Shorter shackle straps would not allow the suspension to work properly either. Check the shackle straps for wear, these are commonly the most worn parts on a trailer suspension, followed closely by the springs. If the holes in the shackle straps...
