Roadmaster Comfort Ride Slipper Springs

Upgrade your current trailer suspension setup with the Comfort Ride system from Roadmaster. The Comfort Ride provides an improved towing experience for your triple-axle trailer. Unlike traditional equalizers, the center hanger boxes in this system prevent shock transfer between axles, creating a smoother ride. In order to absorb and dissipate any road-induced shock that occurs, heavy-duty shock absorbers are included.

Leaf Spring Setup

The front and rear springs that are included with this kit will attach to the hangers that are welded onto your trailer. The eye of the front spring will attach to your existing front hanger, and the eye of the rear spring will attach to the rear hanger. The flat slipper end of each spring will slide into one of the provided center hanger boxes. The 2 center springs will mount in the middle of the setup, attaching to the hanger boxes on either side.

Roadmaster Comfort Ride Center Hanger Box

This center hanger box differs from a traditional equalizer, which typically connects the springs on a triple-axle trailer. In a standard equalizer setup, any vibration or road-induced force gets transferred between the axles until it eventually dissipates. This occurs because standard equalizers are built with pivot points at their center. So each time the front axle hits a bump in the road, the movement of that axle causes the spring to jump. This pivots the equalizer, which transfers movement to the center and rear springs and, in turn, to the center and rear axles, creating an ongoing wave of motion.

Roadmaster Comfort Ride Slipper Spring Rollers In Center Hanger Box

With the Comfort Ride setup, the center hanger sits flush with your trailer frame, preventing any movement of the box itself. This isolates each spring, thus eliminating any connection between the axles. To ensure that each spring is still able to move along with the axle, preventing an overly stiff ride, the flat end of the spring mounts in the center hanger box between a roller and a safety bolt. Having a roller positioned above the flat end will keep the spring from hopping inside of the box. Any up-and-down motion the spring incurs will be translated into front-to-back motion to create a smoother, quieter, more controlled ride.

The independent axle operation will improve handling and braking performance as well. Axle roll up occurs when the trailer's rear tires are lifted off the ground while braking, resulting in weight and traction being lost on the rear tires. With the Comfort Ride system installed, tire traction increases by as much as 70 percent during braking because there is no axle roll up. The result is a safer, more comfortable towing experience.

Gas Shocks Absorb Road Vibration

Instead of transferring shock between axles, the Comfort Ride setup ensures that each spring freely absorbs and dissipates any road-induced force on its own. In order to do this, heavy-duty shocks are included.

Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorber

The gas-powered springs inside of the shocks' sealed cylinders compress and extend as you drive. The compression and extension of the springs creates enough force to offset the amount of incoming force or vibration that occurs when you tow over rough or uneven terrain.

You'll experience up to a 50 percent reduction in the force that's transferred to your trailer while traveling on paved roads. You'll also receive up to a 76 percent reduction over cobblestones and a 94 percent reduction over gravel roads. This means improved handling, even over potholes and uneven pavement, and the contents of your trailer will stay in place during travel.

Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers Installed

Typically, when shocks are installed on a trailer, they're positioned at a more horizontal angle. But this positioning doesn't compensate very well for the up-and-down movement of the trailer's suspension. Roadmaster's patented adjustable frame brackets are specifically designed to allow these shocks to be mounted at a nearly vertical angle. As a result, these shocks will have the leverage necessary to limit up-and-down and lateral movement during both compression and rebound.

Rigorous Testing Standards

This Comfort Ride system has endured rigorous testing to ensure its durability and longevity. This testing includes computerized Finite Element Analysis, which establishes guidelines to ensure superior product quality and safety. Roadmaster also tested these shock absorbers at the Navistar Proving Grounds, a private test facility that provides real-world handling and safety testing. The result is a safe, long-lasting product that you can trust.

Installation

Installation of the Comfort Ride system is fairly straightforward.

The eyes of the front and rear slipper springs attach to the welded hangers on your trailer's frame using your existing suspension bolts. The center hanger boxes bolt over your existing center hangers and secure in place with the provided hardware. Once the safety bolts and rollers are installed in the center boxes, just slide the slipper ends of the springs in so that they rest between the bolts and the rollers. The eye of each center spring will mount in the front most center hanger box with the included hardware, and its slipper end will position in the rear box in the same way as the other slipper ends.

To install the shocks, begin by replacing your U-bolt tie plates with the plates included in this kit. You will need to retain your existing U-bolts and nuts for installation. Once the tie plates are installed, bolt the upper mounting brackets to your trailer's frame with the included hardware. Some drilling is required when mounting the brackets to the frame. Finally, attach the shocks between the tie plates and the frame brackets.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster Comfort Ride Suspension Review

Hi there trailer owners. Today, we're going to be taking a look at Roadmaster's Comfort Ride leaf spring kit with shock absorbers. This kit is also available in only the slipper spring system, which includes your leaf springs as well as the slipper spring box here. And you can also purchase just the shock absorber kits separately because it's not necessary to have the super springs to install the shock absorbers. And this is what our system is going to look like when it's installed. We're going to be taking a look at some of the components underneath to give you a better idea of how it works.

But the big thing here is you can see that we no longer have an equalizer here in the middle, as our slipper spring box takes its place. The big benefit of this is that with your equalizers, whenever you hit a bump or pothole or anything with one axle, as it moves up or down, it will send some of those forces to the other axle, causing it to move. With the slipper Springs system here, each axle is going to be completely independent. So this one, as it moves up and down, the leaf spring here can slip inside the box without ever affecting the leaf spring or axle behind it. You can see here, we've got bolts installed, the shocks as well as the slipper spring system. And this is really how I would recommend that you do it.While these can be installed by themselves, they do have brackets that come with the shock so you don't have to mount it to the super spring box.

But if you're doing the whole assembly, I find it that it's just easier to do this because the mounting for the slipper spring box is similar to how you'd Mount the brackets for the shocks, but you'd have to mount multiple brackets to get your shocks installed, where this is just one and then our shock attaches directly to it. They also work best when working together as they're designed to work with one another. The slipper spring box attaches directly to the bottom of your frame. And you want to make sure that you've got enough room where it's going to fit. The box from end to end measures 18 inches. And the thickness is going to be that basically of where your equalizer hanger is.

As this slides over your equalizer hanger, it actually mounts directly to it. There are two different mounting holes here that are slotted to ensure that it's going to line up with your hanger. To give you an idea of how far down it is, we use the upper hole and from the bottom of our frame to where our center bolt is, it's about three inches down from the bottom of the frame. If you we're to use the other hole, that one starts at about four and a half inches and goes to about five and a half inches for that slot.If you're installing the shocks, then you'll also want to keep in mind the amount of threads sticking out of your U bolts as you will use your factory U bolts to attach the new shock mount bracket. So as long as you've got a half inch of threads, then you know that your U bolts are going to be long enough to work with this bracket.

Here on the backside, we can see our slipper spring box and where our shocks mount to it. This provides us with an additional level of comfort because as our suspension wants to go down, our shocks will dampen that. And it'll also it when it retracts preventing up and down movement. And also it really helps prevent a lot of chucking that you get with your trailers. We're now looking inside the slipper box from underneath, and you can see here's our leaf spring, where it's angled, and this is the roller that it rides on. So as your suspension moves up and down, it can flex and roll on this roller, but it can never come off. If our suspension we're to be hanging, this lip here would catch on the roller and prevent it from coming down. You can see that it's not connected any way to our rear axle. And over here is our other axle. You can see the other roller and the spring and they're not attached in any way. So this is the real big part of the system is that we no longer have any connection between one axle to the other transferring those forces. This greatly improves the ride quality of the trailer. But beyond that, it also helps increase the safety of it because if one axle is not effecting the other, there is more pressure pushing downward on our axles to keep our tires on the road, which increases our surface area of our tires on the road surface. This increases our grip, so we're going to get better traction and greatly increases the stopping performance of our trailer. The system is designed for a tandem axle setup with axles rated between 5,200 pounds and 7,000 pounds. Included with your kit, you'll receive four shocks, two for each side, one per axle on each side. You'll also receive new leaf springs for each side for each axle, as these leaf springs are redesigned to work with the slippers so they only have an eye bolt on one side and the other side has the slipper end. You'll also receive all the brackets and mounting hardware you need to get everything installed. So it's all the hardware for your slipper box to get it up, as well as getting all of your shocks mounted. And I really liked the way they provided multiple adjustment brackets for your shocks to ensure that it's going to be a fit for your trailer. And there's multiple holes to mount your shock on, so you can get the appropriate length for your shock to fully extend and retract without finding up.And for those of you who do all the maintenance on your own trailer, this is going to be an better setup as far as being able to lift your trailer. With your factory equalizers, if you we're to lift up the trailer by its frame, so you can take the wheels off and maybe service the brakes, often what happens is the axles will fall down and the shackles that connect your equalizer to the islet on your leaf springs, the leaf spring ends up dropping down below. So when you go to set your trailer back down, it's still in this position and it's not going to ride correctly until you readjust that shackle up above with the islet above your equalizer. And that can sometimes be a difficult thing to do. You can do it with a Jack by jacking up the axle and working back and forth to get into pop into place, but that's often an extra 15, 20 minutes after you've performed your maintenance that you really don't want to have to mess with. And with this system, we just lift it up, do whatever we needed to do, lower it down and it's going to be right back into its proper position. If you compare this system to your factory equalizer or upgraded equalizers, this is going to give you the best of any setup because our axles are going to be completely independent. None of the shock that one will receive will transfer to the other. There are upgraded equalizes out there that have dampeners in the middle, whether they are a rubber dampener or an pneumatic dampener, all of those, while they absorb some of the shock, some of that force is still transferred from one to the other. So it does give you a smoother ride, but not nearly as smooth as this setup here. What I also like about this setup is that it is easy to get shocks installed with it, which is just a further improvement in ride quality. So if you're wanting your trailer to not knock around all the components on the inside, this is going to be the best absolute setup, as far as reducing any of that vibration and movement in your trailer. This also decreases chucking more than any of the other setups as well. So it's just going to feel better when pulling your trailer down the road versus your factory, or even your upgraded equalizers. And unlike the other options, this setup is going to be completely maintenance free. We have rollers here, so there's free moving components. So we don't have to worry about any bushings wearing out over here on this side of the component. And the islet holes at the end of our leaf springs come with self-lubricating bushings pre-installed in them, unlike your typical copper or brass bushings that will eventually wear out, they're not lubricated. And even the ones that you do lubricate will wear out, but we lubrication does drastically reduce that amount of time. So a lot of your upgraded equalizers do come with lubrication hardware so you can maintain those. With this type, we don't even have to go down and grease them. They just handle everything all by themselves. And that completes our look at Roadmaster's Comfort Ride leaf springs suspension kit with shock absorbers.

Along with the new springs....everything works as advertised. Well satisfied. No complaints. I had to modify the one set of shock brackets to fit, as I have raised the trailer 5 inches to match up with the 4 inch raised truck. Otherwise...no swaying....no bouncing........no problems. Thanks etrailer for your help.

Great. On a 32 ft. WildCat fifth wheel..No problems. In the driveway, I installed the Shock system, heavier springs. I had to modify the shock-to-frame brackets, as the trailer has been raised 5 inches. Along with the MorRyde Stabilizers the trailer tows like a dream. Be sure to have the wet bolt grease nipples pointing out to the side of the unit for easier access. Next project will be to replace the scary Magnetic Brakes with a hydraulic system. Thanks etrailer. Kudos to your wonderful support crew. It was just like calling my buddy next door.

OMG! After having the trailer bottom out on the stock springs while traversing a RR crossing, this system has proven to be amazing. Returning from a VA campground I crossed multiple RR crossings and traveled some rough pavement. I found I had left a bottle of shower soap on the ledge in the shower! It was still there when I set up in my yard. Not possible with the stock suspension!

This was the best thing I could have done to make the 5th wheel experience a good one. Prior to installing failing to properly secure things in the trailer would not end well. After the install, items remained where they were last placed.

I've installed this on a 5th wheel about 1 year ago and I have to say I've been very pleased with this purchase. While stuff in the trailer still gets out of place, it feels like it has improved the handling of the trailer over rough roads and during windy conditions. I've probably put about 5,000 miles on my trailer after installing this kit and have to say I have no regrets with this purchase.

I would recommend this over other type upgrades. It may cost more but like the saying goes you get what you pay for. Install was not difficult.Installed on a 2015 Fuzion 325 toyhauler, towability plus road jarring much improved having ridden in trailer before and after, you can sit in the rear in your seat and not get thrown out.The other notable upgrade was the reese goose box fith wheel hitch,a real good upgrade. Great improvement over stock. Trailer tracks more stable. Less movement of stored away items. Less chucking, pretty much eliminated it.

Worth the time and expense, the trailer tracks much better, less movement of items inside the trailer.

Review from a similar Comfort Ride in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

Just finished installing the Roadmaster shock system on my Momentum 398M tri-axle. The kit arrived well packaged and all items were included. The instructions that come with it are pretty straight forward and easy to understand. This would probably be a lot quicker install with some helping hands, but I did it by myself in about 6 hours. The hardest part of the entire setup is all of the overhead drilling, but with a little redneck ingenuity I was able to make that bearable. As far as this kit goes, the ordering process and the outstanding customer service from Angela W, etrailer.com rocks!! This could be the start of a wonderful relationship..

Still feel it is the best upgrade you can do short of going independent. Still a great product for the price.

So far so good on my 2015 Open Range 3X427BHS! Overall, the old suspension system was just rusted and worn out and the tires were a maximum of 1" apart, which made me really nervous while pulling. It was tough to remove, but nothing a little WD-40 and some praying couldn't fix! Installation was pretty straight forward using the included directions and [online video] University. Looking forward to seeing how it rides this weekend on our next trip.

Review from a similar Comfort Ride in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

We bought a new Grand Design 22 foot Travel Trailer and Ford Expedition Tow Vehicle. Even after we installed a Curt Trunnion Bar Equalizer Hitch, the trailer bucking was unbearable for long trips. It was so bad we were ready to sell the whole rig. The suspension of all travel trailers is sub-standard. We bought the Roadmaster RM-2450 Shock absorber kit and installed it ourselves. It made a WORLD OF DIFFERENCE in the ride! However, the installation was not easy for a 76 year old man. Thanks to a neighbor with a flat paved driveway and an extensive tool inventory, I got it done. You need pre-planning and high jack stands. Read the instructions and view some online videos before committing. Verify that there are no gas or water pipes next to the trailer frames. Determining the location of the upper shock frame bracket is tricky. This measurement sets the angle of the shock absorber, and has to be done BEFORE you lift the trailer and remove the wheels! You have to have the trailer loaded, the wheels on the ground and the tow vehicle connected. Then install one shock absorber from the bottom up and measure where the upper bracket sets on the frame. Then you can disconnect and lift the trailer up on jack stands and drill the frame holes. I was lucky that I was close to the IDEAL 35 degree angle on my trailer. I don't know what you would do if you are outside the 25 to 40 degree allowable range. The instructions say you have to get 12" long drill bits to drill into the bottom of the frame. There's not enough clearance to insert a standard drill between the springs and frame. Pushing the drill up overhead, and having the bit tight to the springs makes it almost impossible to get the holes straight. So when you drive the self tapping bolts into the holes it is very easy to strip them. A better solution is to have a low profile angle drill. Otherwise you'll be welding the brackets or glueing bolts. We also installed heavy duty shackles, wet bolts and bronze bushings while the trailer was up on the jack stands. You have to refer to other reviews for that. The Trailer Mfg. stock components are junk.

Thank you for asking for a 1 year review as I never do them without enough test time. I have made several trips into western VA and West VA so have used the mountains and found it made a big difference in stability and bounce as advertised. No fault of the product but had I known I would have changed axles to next load level higher and kit to match. Instructions were pretty good, it does require some drilling through 3/16 steel 9/16" holes so having proper tools for job is essential. I got some trailer jack stands from [nationwide retailer] they provided safety at a reasonable cost. I highly recommend them.

Every towable RV should be equipped with these shocks at the factory especially those like us that have a rear kitchen! The ride difference before and after is 'shockingly' (pun intended...) better. No more broken dishes and I know all of the installed components in our 2021 Keystone Cougar 29RKS suffer less wear and tear, and damage from road travel. It also made our tow vehicle ride much better than before the shock install due to 'bucking' on the fifth wheel hitch when towing the -29RKS. These shocks have been the best upgrade/add-on we have ever added to our current RV and four others in the past. Do yourself (and your RV...) a favor and INSTALL THESE SHOCKS! You won't be disappointed.

Highly recommend adding these on your camper. We added them to our Grand Design 2400 BH which was a night and day difference in ride quality. This eliminated a lot of the porpoising, chucking and side to side roll that you sometimes get. I was amazed how much smoother of a ride pulling the camper is now. Running these shocks now in combination with the Road Armor Equalizers.

I pull a toy-hauler 5th wheel trailer between Alaska and the lower 48 through Canada twice a year. Much of the road is rough and caused me to break a leaf spring every trip. Since installing a shock absorber system and upgrading from 5-leaf to 6-leaf springs, I have so far eliminated suspension damages on the route.

great product, I'm a fabrication/designer, well thought out and much better than the original factory suspension. I also added structural kickers to the suspension hangers to help side load generated while turning and not relying on the hangers for strength. I also replaced the original factory u bolts, might as well have all new going back on

Well, all the shocks are installed. Working on my back is hard, not as easy to do stuff today as it was years ago but I got I done. Sharp drill bits and using the frame mounting plates as a guide was the key. However, I had so much dirt and metal bits in my hair I had to take my dogs flee comb to my head before I could shower. Now for the next project whatever that is. I’m sure I’ll think of something.

As always etrailer delivered a great product, complete and undamaged in record time. I received the Roadmaster -2460 shock kit for the suspension on my 2019 36 foot fifth wheel three days earlier than expected and completed the installation myself in approx. six hours. Anxious to take it down the road and see how much it has improved the ride in my coach. Great price, easy installation and good instructions for those mechanically inclined DIY's.

The Roadmaster - 2460 shock kit improved the ride in my 36 ft. fifth wheel, eliminating the rough ride and jarring we had been experiencing previously. We have traveled approximately 10,000 miles since the installation and are extremely happy with the performance.

Arrived very well boxed, nice heavy brackets, fit well with exception of trying to get angle and length both correct. But after a bit of thinking and grinding and welding every thing worked out quit well. Will find out next week how much improved it will be, as we start our annual long trip estimate about 12,000 miles this trip out.

Yes, we've checked with Roadmaster in the past and they've confirmed for us that the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Leaf Spring Suspension Kits like the # RM-2470-2580-3 that you referenced can be used on under and over slung axle setups. The part # RM-2460-2570-3 is the kit that includes springs and shocks or for just a shock kit you'd want the part # RM-2470-3. I attached a review video for this for you to check out as well.

What that means for you is there is a chance you might have to move your hangers but if you have right 35 inches between axle centers like your dimensions would suggest you should be fine as-is.
