Video Transcript for 3 Inch Round Trailer U-Bolts Installation

Hi there trailer owners. Today we're gonna be taking a look at red lines line of replacement U bolts. Round U bolts are commonly used to hold your leaf spring stack onto your axle. And if you're making any repairs to your trailer it's possible that the threads can get damaged where you can't reuse the U bolt. You might have to replace them in that instance, or if you had some sort of blowout or any other kind of damage where you might've had some damage that caused some issues with your U bolts here you may need to replace those as well. Over time if you've constantly taken these off they do stretch out over time.

So it is a good idea to replace them. If you've had several repairs done and remove them. The ones that redline have, offer slightly longer length. So that way you can ensure it's going to be a fit for your trailer. We also recommend these.

If you're gonna be adding accessories to your trailer and you need the additional length if that accessory goes under a U bolt we can see our factory U bolt here on the trailer We we're just working on if we wrap it around and we can see it only goes up about that high. This is about six inches in length. The new one here that we put on is about seven inches in length and it gives us the extra length that we needed to be able to install the mounting plate for the shock absorbers that we just installed on here. With our factory U bolt we'd have almost no threads here sticking out. So our nut would be able to go on but it wouldn't be able to be properly torqued with enough threads to ensure that it's gonna stay torqued in that position.

Today, we're showing off the three inch wide U bolts with a half inch diameter. These have a seven inch length, and we're gonna use those to get our comfort ride system installed but we have them available on all the various sizes. So that way you can ensure you got a replacement for your trailer. We have them down as small as an axle diameter of one and three quarters of an inch. That's going to be your 2000 pound axles all the way up to an axle that is five inches in diameter.

And that's gonna be your larger axles that are around 12 to 15,000 pounds. Now the diameter of the U bolts do change as the sizes go up.Your smaller ones that only are for the one and three quarter inch axles typically have a size of three eights and of diameter while your large ones, with that five inch wide axle length is going to have a diameter of a U bolt of about three quarters of an inch to ensure that it can handle that weight rating of that. Now there are a couple of different U bolts that do have an overlap. The three inch ones that we're using here also have another three inch version available. That's in a nine 16th diameter. So you want to just check your trailer and your old U bolt to make sure you're replacing it with one that's going to be accepted acceptable with the hardware that you have on here. Cause we wouldn't be able to take a nine 16th and slide it through these brackets because the bracket on here was designed for a half inch. Replacing your U bolt is pretty easy. The smaller your trailer is usually the easier it is. Those larger U bolts. You are going to need to have a little bit more strength required to remove and torque down the nuts ' cause they are typically a higher torque value for the larger the U bolt. When taking them off you wanna make sure your axle is properly supported. If you follow along with us, we'll show you an example of how to remove and swap out the U bolts. We'll begin our installation by parking our trailer onto level ground. Your driveway in most cases is a great spot and lifting it up and removing our wheels. You'll wanna Jack it up and support the frame with Jack stands. You have to get it high enough off the ground where your wheels are off the ground so you can get those pulled off. And once you've got those pulled off here you are set up to begin working. We're using a lift here on ours to hold ours up. But again, it's gonna be very similar at home. You're just not gonna have the cross beam with the lift. You'll have just these Jack stands here underneath your frame. Now the Jack stands that I've got here. These are just precautionary Jack stands that are underneath the axles because we're going to be taking the U bolts loose. And once we take those loose, the axle can drop down. But I also have my Jack here underneath the axle and I'm gonna be moving this Jack around and keeping it under the axle that I'm working on this 'cause the Jack stands are really just supplementary in case something happens. My Jack, where two something we're to happen to the Jack with a fluid leak out we got a Jack stand here to support it. So we're going to remove the nuts here on top to take these U bolts off, the U bolts that are on your trailer. Aren't gonna be long enough to accept the brackets for the comfort ride system. So we are going to be replacing these U bolts. You can get new U bolts here at etrailer. Once we get these off, we'll show you the new U bolts. We're using a three quarter inch socket to remove the nuts, they are gonna be on there little snugs if I have to start it by hand, and then your tool can zip it off easily the rest of the way. Now we've got these all zip loose. We can pull our U bolts out of there. They just pull down. They're usually a little bit stiff. So just kind of working back and forth and just pull downward, come out of there. You can also kind of rock the top piece here. sometimes that helps . If you pull it over like this you can kind of get a little bit of a bang motion on it. To help persuade it off of there. So now we've got our factory bracket out of the way. This is your comfort ride. Your shock bracket. You'll have four of these in the kit and they are gonna be specific to a certain location. So we've got them set out here for the axle. So this is going to be for the front axle towards the front. We want this bracket to be angled down towards our equalizer here. And we also want to make sure that the holes are flat facing towards the center of our trailer like that. And the one for the axle behind this is gonna face like this. So these brackets are gonna be angled like this, on the opposite side of our trailer we want the same story to be mimicked over there. So we'll take our bracket now we'll set it on top of our leaf spring you see there's alignment pin there that does line up with the hole in the bracket. We can then set our factory bracket right back on top grab our new U bolts. We'll go up through the bottom through our shock bracket and our factory one. And then we'll secure it with the new nuts that came included with the U bolts. We'll do the same thing with the other two sets of holes right over on the other side of our leaf spring stack. Once we got them all started we can go back and tighten them down. You do wanna kind of go back and forth to try and tighten them down evenly. So you have roughly the same amount of U bolts sticking up above each night. So now we'll torque our hardware to the specifications found in your instructions. And that completes our look at red lines line of replacement, U bolts..

I replaced my leaf springs, drums, brakes and added the Dexter E-Z Suspension kit to my Keystone Cougar Fifth Wheel trailer last year. This was my first time working with etrailer and I can’t say enough about how well it all went from the ordering to the install. Tammie P did a amazing job with knowing what parts would work best on my trailer. Tammie also gave me updates on my deliveries that I appreciated. I had a trip planned short after I received my parts. So having someone at their end checking on arrival dates helped. In the future I will definitely use etrailer for all my trailer needs. Thanks again for all the help! Great Team....

These are a great price (nearly 1/3 of my local parts store) and even though they sent the wrong ones the first time, they came very quickly. I would say no more than 7-8 days including the time it took to get the correct u-bolts to my door. The customer service team is very friendly and quick to fix mistakes. The return/reorder was seamless and I got hold of someone on the phone quickly rather than being put on hold for a long period of time.

A year later everything is still working great, glad I didnt waste extra money at the local parts store. These were less than half of the local prices.

All the parts ordered worked great. Susan did a great job in finding a way to get all the u bolts in stock by finding two different sets to put together so I would not have to wait for several to come into stock for my order and at about the same cost. Managed to get the trailer together in time to do a trail work project that was on the schedule before these broke.

Ask the Experts about this Redline Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

  • What is Needed to Install Spring Seats on Other Side of 3,500 lb Trailer Axle
You can have the spring seat removed and installed on the other side of the axle tube, or you could just weld a new spring seat to the other side with # TRSS238. You are correct though, you can't just flip the axle over as the bow of the axle would throw of the alignment.

  • Torque Ratings for Trailer U-Bolts on 3" Round Axle
    Trailer U-bolts will have different torque specs depending on their diameter. For your 2006 Montana 3650RK 5th wheel trailer, which will likely have 3" round axles (though you will want to verify), you will need either 3" Round Trailer U-Bolts 9/16" Diameter # SP01-080 or 1/2" Diameter # SP01-060. The correct torque specs are: - 1/2" bolts: 45 ft/lbs - 70 ft/lbs - 9/16" bolts: 65 ft/lbs - 95 ft/lbs - 5/8" bolts: 100 ft/lbs - 120 ft/lbs I have added a link to a help article on...

  • Raising Height of 2016 Shasta Phoenix 5th Wheel Trailer for Compatibility with 2019 Ford F-350
The best way for your 2016 Shasta Phoenix to ride level behind your 2019 F-350 is to use the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-385-00. This will change the springs from riding under your axles to riding on top of them. It will change your overall trailer height by the 3 inch axle diameter as well as the height of your leaf spring stack. After that you will need to adjust the height of your 5th wheel hitch and your pin box to get the level ride you are seeking.

  • Where are Axle U-Bolts Measured From
U-bolts like the 3 inch axle U-bolt part # SP01-060 are measured from the inside of the U. So it has 3 inches between the U. Axles have a bow to them that has to always point down otherwise the wheels will be way out of alignment. You will need to have the spring seats of your axle removed and welded to the other side so that you can use it in the configuration you want and have the axle facing the correct direction.

  • Can Trailer Leaf Springs be Moved from Below the Axle to the Top of the Axle
Yes, you will need an over-under conversion kit. You can use one of these kits if the trailer uses double-eye springs and the trailer has 2-3/8 inch or 3 inch diameter round axles. (You could use one with slipper spring suspension but the spring seats will have to be fully welded to the axle.) For a 2-3/8 inch round axle use # K71-384-00 and for a 3 inch diameter axle use # K71-385-00. If you cannot use an over/under conversion kit then the only other way to raise the height of the...

  • Recommendation to Raise Trailer Frame Height for Clearance From Axle
You cannot raise your trailer by the method you described. You would instead need to replace your hangers with longer ones or use a system that adds height like the Lippert Components Center Point by Trailair Air-Ride Suspension Upgrade - Tandem Axle # LC1565391 which increases the ride height of your frame by 2 inches. Typically, if you need more clearance from your axle, the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-385-00 for 3 inch axles is the best route to go. This...

  • Lifting Trailer Options and Recommendations
Some people will use spacer blocks to lift a trailer if the springs are over the axle. We don't typically recommend that though. We usually recommend either going with an over-under axle kit or going with taller hangers. The diameter of your trailer axle will determine the size of the parts that you will need to order. If your axle is 3 inches diameter, the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit, # K71-385-00, would be a great choice and if your axle is 2-3/8 inch diameter...

  • Can Trailer Axles Be Mounted Above and Below the Leaf Springs on a Trailer
The best and safest way to have the axles orientated to the leaf spring is the way the trailer was originally manufactured. The trailer manufacturer will have tested the trailer with the original suspension setup for adequate braking and handling performance. If you flip the axles it could work fine, but since it has never been tested it is hard to say for certain. With that being said, you can have the axles on the top or the bottom of leaf springs. If you do have the axles on top of...

  • Should Thread Locker be Used when Installing Trailer Suspension U-bolts
Lock nuts alone should have been fine but you could use some Loctite, # LT37614, for extra protection. Make sure to use the blue Loctite and not the red version. The red would make it very, very difficult to remove the nuts. Since you mentioned the lock nuts failed then I recommend replacing not just the nuts but the u-bolts as well. The threads could have been damaged on the u-bolts so it is better to go ahead and replace them. I have included a link to our trailer suspension u-bolt...

  • Does the Axle Need to Be Supported When Replacing U-Bolts on a Trailer Axle
If your axles are above your leaf springs then you can just remove the old u-bolts and then install the new ones. Check out the video I attached that shows this being done. If your axles are below your leaf springs I would recommend you use a jack to support the axle so that it stays in the spring seat so you can remove the old u-bolts and reinstall the new 3 inch Round Trailer U-Bolts Qty 2 # SP01-060 onto your axles. When tightening the u-bolt nuts you will want to use a criss-cross...
