Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Suspension - Leaf Spring Suspension - APT4 Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the tandem-axle trailer hanging kit for Double-Eye Springs. The leaf spring mounting kit includes your equalizers. It's going to come with your front hangers, center hangers and rear hangers, as well as the necessary hardware for your installation. Now, components for mounting the axle to the springs are sold separately. This kit is designed for use on trailers with tandem 2,000 pound to 7,000 pound axles. This kit is going to be great for building a new trailer, rebuilding an old trailer, or for replacing or upgrading your trailer's suspension system. The hangers and the shackle straps are all made from a durable steel construction.

This kit is going to attach four leaf springs to your trailer frame. Leaf springs are sold separately. With this video, what we want to do is simply just go over the components that are included with the kit. You're going to get a total of four, three-and-one-quarter inch tall front and rear hangers. Two would be used for your front hangers. Two of them would be used for your rear hangers.

The height measurement on these hangers are taken from the center of the 9/16th inch diameter hole to the top of the hanger. If we do that, you can see that's going to measure three-and-one-quarter inches. It's also going to have two holes on top. Those are for spot welds. Again, you're going to get a total of four of those hangers. You're also going to get two, five-and-7/16th inch tall center hangers and these are going to have the three-quarter inch diameter bolt holes.

The five-and-7/16th inch measurement comes from the center of that hole to the top of the hanger, five-and-7/16ths of an inch. Again, these are your center hangers. These hangers actually suspend the included equalizers and you're going to get two equalizers. These are going to measure six-and-one-quarter inches long. That's measured from outer hole to out hole on center.

Put a ruler on there, center on center, separation is six-and-one-quarter inches. These equalizers are made from a very durable construction. They've got a nice protective coating on them to resist rust and corrosion. Your outer holes are going to have a diameter of 9/16ths of an inch. Your center holes are going to have a diameter of three-quarters of an inch. All the necessary bushing on those equalizers are pre-installed, so they are included. You're also going to get eight, two-and-5/8th inch long shackle straps. That's these right here. These components connect to the equalizers and to one end of your leaf spring. That's what connects the leaf springs to the equalizers. Each location here on your equalizer, gets two shackle straps. One located on each side. Again, those shackle straps measure two-and-5/8ths of an inch long. That's measured from the center of one hole to the center of the other hole. You're also going to get 12, three inch long by 9/16th inch diameter shackle bolts. You're going to get 12, 9/16th inch diameter lock nuts. You're going to get two three-and-a-half inch long by three-quarter inch diameter wet equalizer bolts. You're going to get the appropriate castle nuts for those as well as the cotter pins and you're going to get two, 1/8th inch NPT greasers. That's going to allow for easy maintenancing. Basically, what happens is your center hangers are going to get welded on. All the hangers are going to get welded to the trailer frame but your center hangers suspend your equalizers. Then, one end of your leaf spring connects to the equalizers on each side. One end connects here and then another leaf spring end connects here. Those are going to be held in place using the included shackle straps and the hardware. Then, the other ends of the leaf springs connect directly to the front and rear hangers with the included hardware. That's going to do it for today's look at the tandem-axle trailer hanger kit for Double-Eye Springs.

Product was just as advertised. Nice to just order a kit and not have to worry about forgetting something. My only complaint was the packaging as everything was just loose in a cardboard box. Surprisingly nothing fell out in transit considering all the nuts, zerks and cotter pins were rolling around and there was a hole in the side of the box. 423366

Disappointed with the Made In China for the equalisers though quality seems to be ok. Weld on pressings for the shackles and straps were poorly finished, with sharp edges that needed finishing before assembly/paint prep. Country of origin unknown. 639854

This hanger kit and leaf springs for my tandem boat trailer was PERFECT! I did one side at a time. Once we got the old crap off the trailer, reassembly was a snap. It took about three hours from start to finish. Most of the time was spend removing the frozen center bolt from the old equalizers. I'm very happy I opted for the two center bolts to be "wet bolts". Thanks again, I would definitely recommend etrailer to my friends. Regards, Bob 240822

Kit purchased to repalce damaged components on an existing 70's era trailer. The complete hanger kit was cheaper than purchasing the individual parts I needed. The hangers were not used but the equalizers, shackels, and bolts were direct replacements to restore my trailer to tip top shape. I added some nylon spring eye bushings to complete the job! 65122

Ask the Experts about this Redline Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension
Do you have a question about this Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension?

  • Trailer Suspension Kit and 6 Inch Long Equalizers for Tandem Axles and Double Eye Springs
  • Suspension kit # APT4 for tandem axles with double eye springs has 6-1/4 inch long equalizers so it is a possible option for you. Kit # AP233-H248 uses 5-3/4 inch long equalizers. But if you have to have equalizer # TREQ310 then the individual parts will have to be pieced together since there isn't a kit with that equalizer. If you go that route then you would also need: 8 of # 18-11GALV 14 of # 166081 1 of # H248 (or other hangers, see link)

  • How to Find the Correct Replacement Equalizer
  • The Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double Eye Springs # APT5 may have the correct equalizer but you will need to measure the current equalizer to find out. The length from the center of the left-most eye to the center of the right-most eye of your equalizer needs to be the same as the 7-3/4 inch measurement in this kit. Since you said the shackles are hitting the frame I recommend using a kit with a center hanger that is longer than the 3-3/4 inch hanger that comes with Kit # APT5....

  • Based on my research, when using the Universal Group Leaf Springs # SP-222275 that has a spring eye length of 24-7/8 inches with either the Redline Tandem Axle Hanger Kit # APT4 or # APT3HD, you will want a distance of 29-1/2 inches between the hangers on your trailer. Both hanger kits you referenced include everything needed to attach 4 leaf springs to your trailer frame. I have included a couple short video demonstrations on these kits along with an article on positioning a trailer...

  • To raise your travel trailer about 3 inches, your best option is to use an over under kit like # K71-384-00 for 2-3/8 inch diameter axle or # K71-385-00 for a 3 inch axle. These kits will convert your axle and suspension so the axle will be under the leaf springs so it will raise your trailer the diameter of your axle plus the height of your leaf spring stack. • We don't carry the MR4 leaf springs but based on my research they look like they are 26 inch double-eye springs like part # SP-053275. For springs of this length and the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs # APT4 the hangers are going to be spaced 30-1/4 inches apart. I have added a link to a video review of the hanger kit as well as a couple help articles on trailer suspension which I recommend checking out.

  • Trailer Suspension Hanger Kit with the Most Lift for Tire Clearance Under the Trailer Bed
  • The # APT4 Tandem-Axle Hanger Kit will provide about 4 inches of clearance from the center of the trailer axle to the bottom of the trailer frame, with no load on the axle. This is assuming that your axle tube is 3 inches diameter. If your axle tube is smaller the height will be sightly less. The curve of the springs you select will have some affect also. I would recommend that you go with the APT5 hanger kit because all of the hangers are the same height and it will make it easier to...

  • The easiest solution would be if you could lower the head of your fifth wheel hitch, or raise the pin box of your trailer. Either of these options should allow your trailer to sit more level. You would want to make sure you have between 4-6 inches from the overhang of your trailer to the bedrails though. Another option you have would be to move your axles to below the leaf springs. • Can Higher Capacity Leaf Springs be Used on a Trailer Weighed Down by a Bobcat Tractor
  • I do not recommend using higher capacity springs because that will give you a stiff ride. Also the different springs may require a different hanger orientation and since the hangers are welded on this is a professional job since the old ones have to be cut off and new ones welded on. Even if you added the higher capacity springs, the axle and tire capacities will not also increase so you could easily overload the trailer. With a load on the trailer, it is going to compress the springs....
