Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Suspension - Leaf Spring Suspension - APS1 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number APS1. This is the single-axle trailer hanger kit for double-eye springs from Redline. This system is designed to attach two leaf springs, which are going to sold separately, to your trailer frame. You can use the table on the product's product page to help determine the hanger location based on the type of leaf springs that you have. This is designed to achieve 4 1/4-inch or 4 1/2-inch clearance between the trailer frame and the axle, again, depending on your axle size. It's going to include two 1 1/2-inch-tall front hangers. It's also going to include two 7/8-inch-tall rear hangers and they have the steel bushings on the inside.

They also have indicators right here on the top that's going to indicate which side is the top. The flat portion is going to face the front of the trailer. The open end is going to face the rear of the trailer and then the top portion is going to be the portion that needs to be welded. It's also going to come with four 3 1/8-inch-long shackle straps, six 3-inch-long by 9/16-inch-diameter shackle bolts, as well as the 9/16-inch-diameter nuts. This is designed for use on trailers with single 2,000-pound to 7,000-pound axles and it does not include the components for mounting the axle to the springs. That's going to do it for our review of part number APS1. This is Redline's single axle trailer hanger kit for double-eye springs.

Phil, thanks for your business and your review. Since the required U-bolt lengths and diameters vary from axle to axle, the mounting components are sold separately. The U-bolt kits may be found at this link:

Ask the Experts about this Redline Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

  • Comparing the Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kits for Double-Eye Springs APS1, APS2, and APS3
When choosing between the Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs part # APS1, part # APS2, and part # APS3 it will be best to use the one that has measurements that most closely resemble what is already on your trailer. For example, if your rear leaf spring hangers are 7/8" tall or shorter than you would want to use part # APS1 but if they are taller then this you would want to use part # APS2 or part # APS3. The only difference between the two latter kits is that part #...

  • Differences in the Redline Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kits, # APS1, #APS2, and # APS3
The APS1, APS2, and APS3 are all suspension kits for single-axle trailers with 1-3/4-inch double-eye springs. They are designed for use on trailers with single, 2,000-lb to 7,000-lb axles. The difference in the kits are in the rear hangers and the shackle straps. The Redline Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit, part # APS1, uses the Redline Rear Hanger, part # 30-20, which uses a steel bushing and is .91 inches tall. The shackle straps are the Shackle Strap, part # TRSL313, which are...

  • Can a Rear Hanger that is Wider than the Trailer Frame be Still be Used
The reason that the hanger is wider is most likely because double-eye springs are 1-3/4 inches wide. But as long as the hangers you are using are welded to the bottom of the frame as much as they possibly can be it will be fine. Welding should be performed by a qualified professional welder.

  • Are Bushings for Trailer Suspension Spring Hangers Required
Bushings do not always have to be used. Springs typically have bushings or they will use wet bolts depending on which part of the suspension system it is but not always. The bushings limit the wear on the suspension components. There are just different designs. Kits # APS2 and # APS5 use the same 7/8 inch hangers and it is those hangers that come with the bushings. I have included a link to our help article on double-eye trailer suspension for you.

  • Trailer Leaf Spring Hanger Spacing Measurements for Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit APS1
The measurements given on the hanger kits including # APS1 are a guide only. The actual measurements will vary and to get the suspension set up correctly you would first mock up all the parts without permanently installing them. Then once the parts are in the proper positions they can be permanently installed. Basically the charts and measurements given on the hangers kits are good starting points but will not work for every situation.

  • Leaf Springs, Hanger Kit, and U-Bolts for a 2 Inch Square Trailer Axle
Since you do not know the capacity of the trailer axle then you can't go by the capacity of the springs. If the axle is rated for 2,000 pounds and the springs for a 3,500 pound axle then you would still be limited to 2,000 pounds. If you have the inner and outer bearing numbers then that will help to determine what the likely axle capacity is. Since you want to replace the hangers as well as the springs then it doesn't matter which springs you choose. If the axle does end up having...

  • How to Correct Trailer Whose Spring Hangers Do Not Line Up With Spring Seats
You will need to have the spring seats removed to have them or new spring seats welded to your axle at the correct locations to match your trailer's hanger spacing. For a 3-inch round axle rated between 5200- and 7200-lbs use part # TRSS300; for a 2-3/8-inch diameter 3500-lb axle use part # TRSS238; for a 1-3/4-inch diameter 2000-lb round axle use part # TRSS175. If you cannot re-position the spring seats to match the hanger spacing then you can have a qualified welder install new material...

  • How Does the Rear Hanger Get Welded to the Trailer Frame
On the Redline Rear Hanger, part # 30-20, which is the rear hanger included with kit # APS1, it is welded to the trailer with the side marked top, facing the outside of the trailer with the word top showing. So the U-shape part is what gets welded to the frame, on the flat part. I included a picture of the hangar that shows the top marking and how it is positioned on the trailer.

  • Determining Spring Hanger Spacing When Installing 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # PR4B
When installing trailer suspension I recommend that you completely mock the setup to determine the best placement for the hangers. To do this I would put all of the suspension together and clamp it in place with the rear shackles at a very slight angle rearward when the trailer is lowered and wheels are on the ground. The 25-3/4" spacing measurement that you referenced from the chart is a good starting point, but due the variance in leaf springs, hangers, and shackles, it can vary where...

  • Spring Hanger Spacing for the Hanger Kit # APS1 with PR4B Springs
The recommended distance between the hangers of the # APS1 would be 25-3/4 inches when using the leaf spring # SP-212275. When the trailer is set on the ground and the leaf spring is supporting the weight of the trailer the spring will flatten out and get longer so that the shackle will face the correct way.

I went out to the warehouse and pulled hanger kit # APS1 to measure the hangers for you. The larger hangers measure 3 inches long, 2-5/16 inches wide, and 2-1/8 inches tall overall. The smaller hangers are 2-1/8 inches long, 1-13/16 inches wide, and 1-1/2 inches tall overall. On the smaller hanger the shackle straps attach to the outsides of the hangers.

If you are absolutely sure you wouldn't exceed the capacity of the one axle on your trailer you could get by with just one axle. You are going to have to move the good axle to where the center equalizer is currently at to ensure you get proper axle placement which ensures that your trailer tongue weight will be in the 10 to 15 percent of the total trailer weight range so that you don't have sway. For a single axle hanger kit you would need the part # APS1.
