Video Transcript for Dexter E-Z Flex Suspension Kit Review and Installation

Jake: Hey, guys! It's Jake here with etrailer. Today, we're going to be taking a look at and I'm going to show you how to install the Dexter Easy Flex system. This is going to allow you to put a new equalizer in to be able to give you a nice, smooth ride compared to that stock equalizer that'll have come on your trailer. This Dexter equalizer is going to upgrade your equalizer for a smoother ride while the rubber core is going to minimize the back-and-forth movement of your trailer and helps to absorb some of that road shock. Now, what I like about this system is that it's going to differ in two different ways from your factory system. It's going to have that rubber bumper to absorb the shock from the road, so it doesn't transfer through the trailer and into the cab of your vehicle. You're also going to have wet bolts connecting all your moving parts with nice, handy grease zerks on the outside so that you can keep all your moving parts well-lubricated. Here's a good look at the comparison between the old equalizer and our new Dexter equalizer.

You can see the shock absorber in the middle that's going to help to give a lot smoother ride. The old bushings we're taking out are going to be a nylon bushing, which have the tendency to wear over time. So, you want to make sure you keep track of them, make sure you keep them up to par.Our new bushings are going to be a brass bushing, so it's going to hold up a lot longer and our bolts are all going to have grease zerks on them to be able to keep them well-lubricated. You are going to have heavy-duty shackles that come in the kit that's going to help to support the heavy suspension that this is going to be able to take on. With that being said, the whole construction of the system is also going to be heavy-duty steel so you're not going to have to worry about any of the parts being compromised. The bronze finish on the outside of this equalizer is going to help to resist corrosion.

If you have a tandem axle setup like we have here, there's going to be a 6,000-pound and 8,000-pound kit available. The kit we have here is going to be an 8,000-pound, so it's going to be a little bit heavier duty to be able to support that weight. It's also going to be available for triple axle trailers in both six and 8,000 pounds. Just see etrailer. Now, if you're wondering how to determine what size kit you're going to need, whether it be the 6,000 or the 8,000-pound kit, we measured between our axles. You need to either get 33 or 35 inches between your axle spacing.

The 35 inches is going to be your 8,000-pound kit, and the 33 inches is going to be your 6,000-pound kit. We have kits available for both. Now that we've gone over some of those features, let's go ahead and show you how we got it installed. To start our install, we're going to start by removing our wheels from our trailer. Now we're going to remove our five bolts from our equalizer so that we can get our new equalizer in place.Go ahead and remove our plates and our bolts. Now, we can remove our equalizer, now that our leaf springs are removed. inaudible 00:03:30 And we can slide our equalizer in place, slide our bolt through.Thread on our nut on the other side. When you're putting the nuts on the back side of the assembly, you want to make sure you squirt in a little bit of anti-seize. They do include you with two of these packets, but it should be more than enough for both sides. And we'll wait to tighten that until we have everything else assembled.

Next, we'll need to take a pin or the old bolt that you pulled out of this hole to knock this bushing out, because we'll be replacing it with these new brass bushings. To get your new bushing in place, you want to stick it in place, take one of your old bolts, slide it in, and tap it into place. If you do it until it bottoms out the bolt, it should have it in the right spot on both sides. Now we're ready to install our shackle link. Here, you're going to see those grease zerks I was referring to earlier, and the two holes where the grease is going to come out and lubricate these pivot points. To get them installed, we're going to start with a little bit of all-purpose grease. Here we're using bearing grease to be able to get our shackle installed. This is just going to help it slide in a little bit better. We can go ahead and get that in place.Slide it into place just like that. Now, we'll take our bracket, slide it on the backside of our shackles, and thread on our nuts. Now that we have our equalizer all put together, we can go ahead and remove our outermost bolt on our leaf spring. What we're doing now is we need to jack up the axle, remove our jack stand so we can lower it, the leaf spring, enough to be able to get that bushing out. Now, we'll take our punch again and knock out that plastic bushing. Now, we'll take our new bolt and insert it on the outside. And we'll place our nut on the backside. And we'll do this same process for the rearmost part of our leaf spring assembly. Now, we're going to take a 21-millimeter wrench on the outside, and a 18-millimeter socket on the inside, to tighten everything down. After you have everything tightened down, you want to go back through and torque everything down to the specifications in your directions. Once you everything torqued down to specifications, you want to grease all the zerks before you put your wheels back on. It's just going to be a lot easier, rather than trying to grease it while your wheels are on.When you see it starting oozing out the side, that's more than enough to fill up that gap. Now that we've got everything fully assembled, we can go ahead and repeat the same process for the other side. You may have noticed that our shackles, one of them is facing up in the correct direction and one of them is facing down. You may have to jack up the front axle just to get this realigned and facing in the upward position. To correct our shackle orientation, we raised up our front axle and that lowered down our shackle; now we just crank up on the rear axle, and you'll see that those shackles are going to be in the correct orientation now. With all that being said, guys, that's going to do it for our look and installation of the Dexter Easy Flex system.

My 10 year old Toy Hauler was in need of some TLC. I dry camp 98% of the time. Traveling down very dusty and bumpy roads. The factory equalizers had plastic bushings that had failed. The Dexter Ez-Flex came with new bronze bushings and all of the hard-ware. It took me and a friend approximately 5 hours to install these. I have only pulled the trailer once since the install, but I could notice a difference right away. I like the fact that there are bronze bushing and I am able to grease them myself. I highly recommend this product if you do a lot of dry camping and going down rough dirt roads. I should not have any other problem with my load equalizers. The staff at etrailer was very helpful Rick S. and Michelle S. keep me informed each step along the way. This is the second big purchase I have made with etrailer and I highly recommend them and will use them again. Thank You 375118

The product is sturdy and built well. I already had prior experience with Dexter parts and these are manufactured with the same high quality. The instructions were easy to understand, and the Install Video that e-trailer had was EXTREMELY helpful. My installation went perfect and I had no issues. I road checked after and it felt smoother. Headed out this week for a 300 mile trip! Thank you e-trailer! 573124

Happy with it made a difference in how trailer handles. Did have a few problems with installing but that was due to me and not the product. 453929

This system made my 30' three axel equipment trailer ride like a Cadillac! Its so smooth when empty I almost forget I'm towing it. With a 13,000 lb excavator on it it's smooth as silk. I'd recommend this system to everyone who has a trailer. 448090

This is an excellent upgrade from what came stock on the trailer. It is heavy duty, rides great and is very well made. I will be upgraded my other trailer with this kit soon. My only complaint is with the packaging. It was damaged in shipping and missing two straps, etrailer sent two replacements out right away. The smaller parts need to be put in a separate box or something. 424465

Review from a similar E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

Bought this kit last year for a tandem axle car hauling trailer. The original equalizer and bushings were just wore out from normal use. The wear was creating lots of extra vibration and noise. Thought I would give this a try. I am beyond impressed. The trailer now tows and rides as good as one of my other trailers that has torsion suspension. Vibration from axle misalignment and rattles are gone! I am so impressed I have now purchased another kit for my 5th wheel camper. Have not had the 5th wheel out yet but my expectations are pretty high after the improvement I have experienced with the other trailer. Some would argue that since my camper has shocks this is redundant. My answer to that is, "shocks and springs have different jobs". Very easy to install. Only took 2.5 hours total for both sides. 600585

Over a year now and about 18k miles. Still impressed! The improvement on my 5th wheel just as impressed as with car trailer.

Just installed, no road test yet. Product appears well made and heavy duty, Dexters packaging could have been better, some of the plating was worn or scratched off of the equilizers, cosmetic only. Shipping was prompt and complete. 156609

Haven't installed yet but looks like a quality part wish they would send the heavy duty shackles for the other ends of the springs. Everything is now heavy duty except for the ends if the springs that attach to the trailer frame rails. 235522

Review from a similar E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I installed this Dexter E-Z Flex om my Keystone Cougar in about 5.5 hours in my driveway. I also installed the complete wet-bolt kit at the same time. I have taken many trips since installing this, including a trip from Cali to Yellowstone and back, and I have to say the quality of the ride has improves so much that it is near perfect! The rough roads and pothole are handled so much easier and I have less fatigue at the end of each days drive. Getting under the rig to lube these has been very easy and keeps things smooth and quiet. Do this upgrade! You won't be disappointed! 323299

Installed on my wife's 2-horse gooseneck trailer with living quarters, along with flip kit for axle to raise trailer for leveling with higher truck. My wife believes the ride was much smoother for the horses based on less anxiety in horse's demeanor when unloading after trip. 315247

Review from a similar E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I like the equalizers, no more squeeking, coupled with the heavier leaf springs i have a better ride. Only one of the four doors/drawers pops open during travel now. I did have problems installing them, the axle was difficult to get back in place on one side, if I had jacked up the whole trailer (all four wheels off the ground) it would have been a lot easier, live and learn. Oh, had my 18 year old granddaughter and two of her girlfriends do almost all of the work as I had minor surgery on my shoulder a week before we did the change out, they wanted to do a 5 day campout with the trailer so the broken leaf spring had to be replaced. Very satisfied with them, the girls work and the equalizers. 654648

About as simple a swap as you could expect. Tear off all your old stuff, throw all the new stuff on and voila! A couple of floor jacks, and 2 hrs max. Great time to swap out your junk Chinese wheel bearings too. No major ride change or anything, but at least I know the links aren't going to fail like the OEM ones did. See pic. 285667

Review from a similar E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

This equalizer system did make a significant difference in the ride of my travel trailer, but only after I replaced the center spring hanger bracket on the trailer, where the equalizer mounts, with a bracket that was about two inches longer, in order to maintain the same clearances for the springs that our original equalizer provided. This assembly is shorter than the stock equalizer in terms of the vertical distance from the center mounting hole to the attachment points for the spring shackles, and when I first installed it, the spring eyes were only about 1" from the trailer frame, causing the springs to bottom out against the frame while driving. Changing the center mounting brackets welded to the frame solved this problem and significantly improved the trailer ride. 711125

Review from a similar E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I installed the E-Z Flex Dexter K71-652-00 suspension system which was an easy afternoon task. Everything went together without any problems and was quite simple. We traveled on our first short trip of 650 miles with the new system and was great. The 30' KZ travel trailer road smoother and seem to handle better. I really recommend this system up-grade to all stock suspension systems with plastic bushings and steel equalizer. 355038

Review from a similar E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

Great product. As an industrial designer (retired), ...kept the machine shop, I dread the quality of pretty much everything I order. Sure, one bronze bushing needed to be pressed in further and a nut was missing due to UPS's classic handling, but the end product can only be described as 'OVERKILL'. Thanks for saving one very poorly designed Lamar dump load trailer ...requiring an axle flip to have any suspension travel at all. 561493

Review from a similar E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I've not actually towed on this product yet as I only just installed it. The product is solid and easy to fit with clear instructions that make installation easy. I chose to replace the leaf springs at the same time. Like others have mentioned in reviews, the packing isn't just terrible, it is completely absent. The heavy contents are just tossed in a box and while that is bad enough, it presents a significant risk to the grease fittings on the EZ-Flex unit. Dexter (not etrailer) need to get that sorted out. I'd have given 5* if it wasn't for that issue. 565951

The E-Z Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension System # K71-652-00 is designed for a tandem axle trailer. • How Often Should Dexter EZ-Flex Equalizers Get Greased
I spoke to my contact at Dexter and he informed me that they recommend greasing the E-Z Flex equalizers every three months or 3,000 miles. I also attached a pretty helpful guide to how often trailer components should be maintained. For grease Dexter recommends wheel bearing grease. For that we recommend the red grease part # L11390. A shock kit would help your trailer and would work well with the EZ Flex system but since you said you have square axles we don't have a kit for that....
