Video Transcript for Dexter E-Z Flex Triple Suspension System Kit Installation

Today on our fifth wheel trailer, we'll be installing the Dexter Axel EZ Flex Triple Suspension System Kit, with five and five-eighths inch equalizers, part number K71-656-00. Now, the reason you want a set-up like this is on our case we're replacing something that's damaged, so we're replacing with a better quality component, which will provide is with a much smoother ride when we're going down the road, provide us with 100% equalization, and will take out a lot of the roughness while we're going down the road. Here's what our kit consists of. We have our front equalizers here, which would go between our front and our middle axle. Then we have our rear equalizer here, which goes between our rear and middle axle. We have your bolts and brackets here, which will connect our leaf springs to our equalizers. As you notice, they all have zerk fittings in here, so we can grease them to extend the life of our bushings inside.

Same with the bolts that attach our leaf springs directly to the frame on our trailer. Obviously we have the back side here, which connects everything like so. Also included are new bushings to go inside our release springs and new bolts and nuts to hang our equalizers onto the frame of our trailer. You may notice that these are greasable here too, as well, so it will extend the life of the bushing inside here. This resilient rubber core that we have here in the middle of the equalizer is unaffected by harsh weather conditions such as salt water, and it will give us that smooth ride that we're looking for. It will take up some of that shock and abuse that otherwise would be transferred directly from our suspension of our trailer to the contents of our trailer.

This will take up some of that and provide us an added sense of protection, so whatever we're hauling in our trailer won't be damaged or affected as much by the harsh roads we're driving on. Now this kit has a very simple installation with robust components. Now that we've gone over the features of our Dexter kit, we'll show you how to install it. As you can see here, the harsh roads that this trailer was subjected to actually caused the leaf spring to rip out of the hanger here on the factory equalizer. We'll start by removing this bolt here on our leaf spring. Same up here.

We'll do this one in the back, as well. Now we can knock this bolt out. Now we'll drive out the original factory bushings that are in our leaf springs. Okay. Now we'll take our new bushing and get it started.

I'm going to use an old bolt here with a nut on it to help drive it in. We'll do the same for the back. Now that we have the rear axle taken care of on our passenger side of our trailer, we'll do the same on our driver's side of our trailer, and repeat the same process for the other two axles. Now that we have all of our bushings replaced in our leaf springs, we'll start with the forward part of the front axle. We'll slide it up into our hanger and we'll install it with our bolt here that has a zerk fitting. The zerks will go on the outside edge. Now it's a good idea before we drive our bolts in all the way to put a thin layer of grease on it. Now we can drive it in all the way with our socket; you don't want to beat on this bolt directly, because the zerk fitting will get damaged and you can't use it. Let's go stick the socket over it. Drive it in. We'll talk our nut, stick on the back side of the bolt, start it loosely for right now. We'll just snug it up a little bit. I'll torque it once everything's been installed. Now we'll remove our equalizer here from the factory that's in the front. Stick our wrench on there in the back. Drive the bolt out and remove the equalizer. Now take our equalizer that's for our front axle. There's an arrow that points toward the front, so you want to make sure that this facing the front of our trailer. We'll go like this, stick it into place, take our bolt, slide it through. We'll thread the gold nut on the inside of the bolt. Get this started a little bit. Take our hammer and knock the bolt in the rest of the way. We have our bolt all the way in now, we'll tighten the nut up on the back side. Now that we have this snugged up just enough, we can carry on with the installation. We'll torque everything once we're done, again. Now we'll take off our rear equalizer. This has no special arrow to warrant it. You can go in either way. It's exactly the same, both sides. Slide it up, put the bolt through, tap it in with our hammer, take our gold nut, put it on the bolt, snug it down with our ratchet. Before we go any further, it's a good idea to hit the grease fittings in our grease equalizers. We're at the front one right now. Pump a little grease in there. We'll do the same on the one on the back of it. Now we'll do the back equalizer. Now we'll take some grease again, lubricate our bolts here, and we'll slide our front equalizer through our front leaf spring. Now we'll take our backing plate here, and we'll slide it over our equalizer. Again, tap it in place. Take two nuts, put them on the bolts, and we'll snug those down with a wrench. Now that we have our front axle done, we'll put some grease in it. We'll do it on all three of the zerk fittings. Now we'll grease up another one of these single bolts, and we'll install it in our front equalizer, through the eyelet for the front part of our middle leaf spring, just like we would the other ones. We'll take a socket, stick it over the bolt, we'll tap it in. Now take one of the nuts, put it on back of the bolt, I'll start to snug it up. Now we'll prep our other bolt plate here. Get some grease on it. Now with the rear part of our middle leaf spring above our equalizer, we'll slide our bolts in place, tap it in with a hammer. Now we'll take another one of our plates and put it on the back side. I may need to massage it on there with my hammer. Take two of our nuts, again, thread those on. Now just like the other ones, we'll grease our bolts up here, make sure axle's above our equalizer, and slide our bolts in. You may persuade it with a hammer again. Now we'll take our plate here and install it on our second equalizer that connects our rear and center axles. Tap it in place, just like this, and we'll install over our two nuts. Then we'll snug them down with our wrench. Now that we have all of our bolts snugged down on our rear equalizer, we can hit all the grease fittings on our bolts on this equalizer and then the one on the other equalizer that we didn't put grease in yet. Now we'll coat another one of our bolts here with some grease and we'll make our final connection with the rear of our leaf spring on our third axle here in the back, into the shackle that's on the frame. I'm going to push up on it. Okay, we got our bolt started, knock it in the rest of the way with our socket trick again. Now we'll install the nut on the back side. Now we'll snug it down with our wrench. With that snugged down, we'll repeat the same process for the other side. Now we'll torque our hardware down, so just refer to the instructions. Now we're doing the smaller ones, and again, these get a lower torque amount than the other ones. Just refer to the instructions for the proper amount. With all of our hardware torqued down to manufacturer specifications, we can put our wheels back on our trailer and go on a journey. That completes the installation of the Dexter Axel EZ Flex Triple Suspension System Kit, with five and five-eighths inch equalizers, part number K71-656-00 on our fifth wheel trailer.

Had these EZ Flex installed on my triple axle toy hauler. Couldn't have been happier with the instant improvement from the old traditional stock suspension system. The ride was smooth and steady with no more bounce from the trailer! I would recommend to anyone with trailer suspension issues. 438978

One of the piviots came in with a broken grease fitting that was a real pain toget the broken piece out. After waiting 3 weeks to get the kit I did not want to wait for another one so I fixed it myself. I have not installed it yet so can not say how well it works yet. 193295

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

This is for people that USE a trailer. If you replace shackle links and equalizers once a year, this is for you. Mine showed up with some spring eye bushings missing, so the packing could be improved. Surprisingly, they wouldn't send me replacements or sell them separately. I ordered them from another vendor and installed the kit. Grease it every now and again and no wear to the pins or shackles so far. Well worth the money if your trailer is on the road every day. 496077

Comments

Still as good as new. I would say it would be nice if the trailer didnt have [] axles because the equalizer is very close to the ground, but I have only dragged it hard once and it didnt hurt it that I can tell. Highly recommended if you daily your trailer.

Installed on my wife's 2-horse gooseneck trailer with living quarters, along with flip kit for axle to raise trailer for leveling with higher truck. My wife believes the ride was much smoother for the horses based on less anxiety in horse's demeanor when unloading after trip. 315247

etrailer is probably the best one stop trailer solution on the web. I just fabricated my own deck over dovetail tailed from scratch. I ordered just about everything I needed for the build. The sales staff are very knowledgeable and professional. I highly recommend etrialer to anyone weather your rebuilding your trailer or fabricating a new trailer, they pretty much have everything your looking for with very good pricing and they stand behind every product they sell. 359320

I've not actually towed on this product yet as I only just installed it. The product is solid and easy to fit with clear instructions that make installation easy. I chose to replace the leaf springs at the same time. Like others have mentioned in reviews, the packing isn't just terrible, it is completely absent. The heavy contents are just tossed in a box and while that is bad enough, it presents a significant risk to the grease fittings on the EZ-Flex unit. Dexter (not etrailer) need to get that sorted out. I'd have given 5* if it wasn't for that issue. 565951

Just installed, no road test yet. Product appears well made and heavy duty, Dexters packaging could have been better, some of the plating was worn or scratched off of the equilizers, cosmetic only. Shipping was prompt and complete. 156609

Would have loved to write a great review as the product appears to be well built and I like the ability to lube all the spring shackles. Unfortunately one of the bolt patterns does not fit my trailer. It would help if ALL the bolt hole measurements would be displayed in one place - so that you would know prior to ordering if things would fit. 234003

The installation is pretty straight forward, however with the trailer weigh and spring strengths it was quiet a lot of work. I have air tools and jacks to work with and it took about six hours. Didn't realize how bad my bushing were worn until it was apart. Camper is a 2013 with about 15000 miles and the plastic bushing were considerably worn. With E-Z flex installed, all the creaking noise is gone, tows a lot smother, still some chucking, but well worth the money and time. Great product and great service from etrailer. Thanks 267849

Haven't installed yet but looks like a quality part wish they would send the heavy duty shackles for the other ends of the springs. Everything is now heavy duty except for the ends if the springs that attach to the trailer frame rails. 235522

Ordered on Sunday it arrived on Friday and installed on Saturday went in easy, hardest part of this job is jack up the trailer. I used two jacks and lots of wooden blocks . All parts fit perfectly every thing was there no complaints. Going on the road next weekend to test the ride of my trailer, hope this will fix my rough riding trailer. It took me 5 hours to install this kit and adjust my brakes , I'm 60 years old so you can do this yourself 570169

I think they will be great. They are installed and I will be traveling soon on the new suspension. Thank you etrailer for youyr good products RV manufacturers are totally missing the boat and have absolutely no regard to quality in regards to the cheap suspension parts they put into these trailers. It just does not make any sense to put such cheap bushings. As far as I am concerned the whole RV manufacturing industry are very inconsiderate of there retail customers. 229233

I installed this Dexter E-Z Flex om my Keystone Cougar in about 5.5 hours in my driveway. I also installed the complete wet-bolt kit at the same time. I have taken many trips since installing this, including a trip from Cali to Yellowstone and back, and I have to say the quality of the ride has improves so much that it is near perfect! The rough roads and pothole are handled so much easier and I have less fatigue at the end of each days drive. Getting under the rig to lube these has been very easy and keeps things smooth and quiet. Do this upgrade! You won't be disappointed! 323299

The staff was very prompt and courteous. I received the product within three working days and am very satisfied with the etrailer service and the product. High quality and has made a world of difference with the quality I feel while towing my FZ322 toy hauler loaded or empty. Much heavier system that rides smoother and more quiet than the manufacturers suspension. 454958

Perfectly much improved ride. With the grease fittings and heavy duty construction and regular maintenance approximately every 5,000 miles there isn’t any evidence of wear in the shackles or pins. Well worth the money spent.

This is an excellent upgrade for any trailer suspension. The bushings in mine were worn out so it was time for a rebuild. All the parts are first class and everything fit together perfect. Don't get in a rush and allow yourself plenty of time. The improvement in the ride was noticeable right away on our first trip of 400 miles...and it was a joy. This rebuild was done on a 1997 Alpenlite 34' fifth wheel 538869

I put this set-up on both my tandem boat trailer and a 7,000# enclosed construction trailer. Prio to the boat trailer was experiencing a blow-out virtually every other trip. Thought I had a tire problem. After rebuilding the suspension system... Blow-outs are a thing of the past. Trailer tracks extremely well in curves at high speeds. On the construction trailer I had a spring eye bolt fall out after installing this kit. I have no idea how or why but I always give the trailer a look over any time I stop. Did a mcGyver to get it back to the shop where I installed a standard suspension bolt. Been going that way ever since... 269088

Some of the wet bolts dont lube well at all. But that was the case when new. Otherwise, all is good on both trailers. Still glad I made the upgrade.

So far so good. Survived the first 1000 miles since installation without any problems. The wet bolt system has quieted the suspension on the trailer considerably. No more low speed squeaks/squeals or groaning from suspension flex in tight turns and bumpy roads. The hard rubber baby buggy bumper pads between the opposing arms are holding up well and do absorb some of the road hazard shock rather than transferring the impact directly to the trailer frame and contents. Really big bumps still rearrange the contents in the back of the trailer, but everything rides nice otherwise. 385807

This is probably one of the best products you can buy when fixing up a trailer where everything is egged out and wasted. Bear in mind that all spring hangers need to have the same dimesnsion from the bottom of the frame to the center of the holes. I didn't know this until the instructions revealed that. If your center hanger is tall, and end hangers are short, your springs will sit at an angle. So, provided all your hangers are the same, it's a quick swap. If they don't match, there will be welding required as well as a bunch of measuring and fabrication. 315219

Replacement of original 10 year old equalizers was fairly easy except for the old bushings in the springs, it took a lot of beating. Did not follow the instructions to remove axles, did 1 side at a time. I did replace the straight grease zerks and installed 90 deg zerks, instructions said the zerks were 1/4 28 thread, that is wrong they are 6mm 100 pitch thread. Great product will be ordering more parts soon. 556086

Great product. As an industrial designer (retired), ...kept the machine shop, I dread the quality of pretty much everything I order. Sure, one bronze bushing needed to be pressed in further and a nut was missing due to UPS's classic handling, but the end product can only be described as 'OVERKILL'. Thanks for saving one very poorly designed Lamar dump load trailer ...requiring an axle flip to have any suspension travel at all. 561493

The EZ Flex equalizers did everything as expected. The shipping for this kit was subpar. The hardware was not packaged and all the parts beat each other during the shipping process. Also, there was 2 packets of copper colored grease that got punctured during shipping (due to zero packing/bubble wrap) and that messed up the majority of the instructions. I contacted 3 different people with Etraier (Adam, George and Angela) and neither were apologetic to how I received my package. I did however receive a canned response of "without honest feedback from valued customers like you we would not know where we need to make improvements" and I was expecting just a little more from Etrailer. The level of customer service prior to buying is top notch. I will give them that. 436306

We replaced the leaf springs and the equalizers at the same time with products from etrailer.com. The Dexter equalizers were much better than the stock product and easy to install. The leaf springs were exactly the same as those we could purchase locally and at a significantly reduced price. Well done etrailer. 501835

Great service, questions answered promptly and accurately, package arrived before the promised time. I had no problems installing the product as the fitment was exact thanks to etrailer product recommendation. Installation of this item should be done by an accomplished mechanic and in a well equipped shop. My 5th wheel is 32' long and the installation requires at least 3 jacks to lift the trailer and axles and to manuver the axle height in order to install the pivot bolts. Product smoothed out ride to some degree but the reason for my installation was due to worn out bushings which made a click/pop noise while driving over uneven surfaces. 234675

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I found the hardware so much hardier then the original hardware. I read several articles about replacing the poorly equipped suspension hardware on campers that can leave you stranded and with a long camping trip coming soon I didn't want to take chances with the old suspension components and with the idea that the Dexter E-Z Flex system will help with smoothing the ride is why I went this way. Your sites reviews and installation videos were very helpful. My camper has LCI axles so I had to check through your reviews so make sure the E-Z Flex would work with my axles. I did find my answer and the E-Z Flex fit perfect. The directions that came with the E-Z Flex were only good for the torque settings. Your video was much more helpful. It took me longer then expected, mostly because I should of had heavier jacks and jack stands and had to improvise some. I haven't had the camper out on the road yet so I cannot comment on the ride, but it feels good knowing that I have a really good suspension under the camper now. Overall I am very pleased with the product and with your help selecting and installing it. 368934

About as simple a swap as you could expect. Tear off all your old stuff, throw all the new stuff on and voila! A couple of floor jacks, and 2 hrs max. Great time to swap out your junk Chinese wheel bearings too. No major ride change or anything, but at least I know the links aren't going to fail like the OEM ones did. See pic. 285667

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I was reading about suspension upgrades in an RV newsletter and I decided to check the Dexter EZ Flex out. After reading the reviews and viewing the installation videos on your website, I took some measurements and decided that these would work the best for my 2017, 28ft Pioneer Toy Hauler. It has tandem 4400# Dexter axles and springs and was a direct replacement for the stock equalizers. It took me 4hrs from the time I unpacked the parts to finishing the job. The installation video is right on and that made set up for the job pretty straight forward. Jackstands(4), a couple of 8t bottle jacks, air impact wrench/sockets, torque wrench, combination wrenches, lead hammer, grease gun, anti seize and some cribbing and you will be able to get the job done. The kit and parts are so much more robust than the stock hardware that comes with the trailer and should be much better than what came stock. I will report back once I get some miles on the road and tell you what I think of how it pulls and handles the bumps! 357303

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I just opened the box and was disappointed to see that everything was just thrown in the box. Just looking at it it looks like some of the threads are damaged from the way everything is packaged. It will be a while before I will be installing this product. I want to say that the service from etrailers was outstanding!! From fast shipping and great price I couldn't be happier with etrailer. 475693

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

After a year and 20,000 miles, this was one of the best upgrades in towing and ride on my 42' fifth wheel. It took out a lot of the small bumps that would open cabinet's and knock things over in the shelves. Another great advantage is the bronze bushings are greasable and do not squeak like the OEM plastic, the OEM bushings had around 3000 miles and we're already worn through, the bronze if kept greased will probably last the life of the trailer. 438995

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I purchased this to replace the worn EZ Flex suspension on our 2011 Heartland Bighorn. The original EZ Flex was not a wet bolt, so I figured this was a good upgrade. I have read that Dexter had a bad batch of equalizer rubber and ours was definitely evident of that. The bumper material had completely collapsed and cracked such that the equalizers were hitting metal-to-metal. The nylon bushings and bolts were in good shape but the bronze bushings in the equalizers were worn through on the inner edges. We have towed our 5th wheel about 20,000 miles, coast-to-coast. I was surprised at the wear seen. Installation went well with one broken bronze spring bushing requiring a reorder. The rest of the installation worked well. I used two bottle jacks (20 ton for frame, 6 ton for one axle) and a floor jack for the second axle. A C-Clamp came in handy to center the spring on the bracket for bolt installation. 3-4 pumps of grease for each of the fittings. We'll see if it helps in a couple of weeks on Michigan spring roads. 491247

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I installed the E-Z Flex Dexter K71-652-00 suspension system which was an easy afternoon task. Everything went together without any problems and was quite simple. We traveled on our first short trip of 650 miles with the new system and was great. The 30' KZ travel trailer road smoother and seem to handle better. I really recommend this system up-grade to all stock suspension systems with plastic bushings and steel equalizer. 355038

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

We have a Sandpiper mid bunk 5er we bought 2 years ago as we upgraded from a travel trailer. As the driver I could immediately tell the improved handling pulling a 5th Wheel over the travel trailer. However, that was the extent of joy going to the fifth wheel. For two years we suffered with a bumpy ride as we towed our camper around the southeast. We began our journey to improve the ride with the Lippert flex air pin box which made a difference, but we were not satisfied. Next we moved from a standard equalizer system to the Dexter Ez Flex and the wet bolts. I will say we also upgraded our tires to the Goodyear endurance’s tires at the same time. Our first trip was 400 miles through some inner city interstates and some smooth interstates. The combination of all three components working together ( the pin box, tires, and dexter Ez flex system) made the ride enjoyable once more. My wife said that it felt like it used to when we towed our travel trailers. Now I will say it took money to get the ride we wanted, but it was worth it for the amount we use and paid for our RV. Please note that you will lose a little ride height moving from a standard equalizer to the dexter. In my case I lost somewhere around an inch based on my best guess, but I did not measure before and after. Overall I’m thrilled with the improvement we noticed. 572609

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

My 10 year old Toy Hauler was in need of some TLC. I dry camp 98% of the time. Traveling down very dusty and bumpy roads. The factory equalizers had plastic bushings that had failed. The Dexter Ez-Flex came with new bronze bushings and all of the hard-ware. It took me and a friend approximately 5 hours to install these. I have only pulled the trailer once since the install, but I could notice a difference right away. I like the fact that there are bronze bushing and I am able to grease them myself. I highly recommend this product if you do a lot of dry camping and going down rough dirt roads. I should not have any other problem with my load equalizers. The staff at etrailer was very helpful Rick S. and Michelle S. keep me informed each step along the way. This is the second big purchase I have made with etrailer and I highly recommend them and will use them again. Thank You 375118

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

The EZ Flex suspension system is so much more robust that the parts that were removed. Installation is pretty straight forward, however when doing it make sure you have jacks and stands to do the job. I did one side at a time it was pretty easy and took about 1.5 hours on each, all done on the driveway. I will give a further update when the time comes along to take the trailer out. This has got to give the trailer greater stability when towing. Customer support from etrailer is top notch and answered all my questions before I purchased the system. Thanks etrailer for your support, shipping was quick so there was not much wait time. 527486

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

etrailer processes failed. I ordered this product on a Wednesday, during the check out process, I purchased 2 day shipping so it should have arrived on Saturday. It arrived on Monday because etrailer doesn't include Saturday delivery on Saturday. I purchased the same part from a big online store on Thursday night and got it on Saturday for $20 more. Don't purchase anything from etrailer with 2 day shipping past Tuesday. Go with the 3 day shipping. Its the same delivery schedule and you save $18 on shipping. I will never use etrailer again! Go somewhere else! The device when on great and fit perfectly. The trailer already seems very stable. 399486

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

Bought this kit last year for a tandem axle car hauling trailer. The original equalizer and bushings were just wore out from normal use. The wear was creating lots of extra vibration and noise. Thought I would give this a try. I am beyond impressed. The trailer now tows and rides as good as one of my other trailers that has torsion suspension. Vibration from axle misalignment and rattles are gone! I am so impressed I have now purchased another kit for my 5th wheel camper. Have not had the 5th wheel out yet but my expectations are pretty high after the improvement I have experienced with the other trailer. Some would argue that since my camper has shocks this is redundant. My answer to that is, "shocks and springs have different jobs". Very easy to install. Only took 2.5 hours total for both sides. 600585

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I like the equalizers, no more squeeking, coupled with the heavier leaf springs i have a better ride. Only one of the four doors/drawers pops open during travel now. I did have problems installing them, the axle was difficult to get back in place on one side, if I had jacked up the whole trailer (all four wheels off the ground) it would have been a lot easier, live and learn. Oh, had my 18 year old granddaughter and two of her girlfriends do almost all of the work as I had minor surgery on my shoulder a week before we did the change out, they wanted to do a 5 day campout with the trailer so the broken leaf spring had to be replaced. Very satisfied with them, the girls work and the equalizers. 654648
