Video Transcript for Dexter Bronze Bushings Installation

Hi there, trailer owners. Today, we're going to be taking a look at Dexter's bronze bushing replacements. And this is what our new bronze bushing looks like once you've got it driven in. Bronze bushings will protect your leaf spring from anywhere, because this is the designed wear point. A bushing is designed to take up that wear. By having our bronze bushing in here, when we go down the road, and our leaf spring is moving up and down, and our bolts are pivoting inside of it where it connects to our equalizers here, over time it's going to wear this bushing out and that's exactly what we want.

We want the bushing to wear out, not our leaf spring. To help minimize and slow down the effects of wear on our bronze bushing, we can ensure that we have a wet bolt installed, and this is going to allow you to grease inside the bushing so we don't have the metal on metal contact. We've got a nice lubrication in there, and that's going to drastically extend the life of our bronze bushing there.Compared to our plastic bushings like you see here, the bronze bushings have the potential for a greater life span if properly maintained and greased. The nice thing about the plastic bushings is that you never have grease these, and you don't want to grease them. They're self lubricating. If you're looking for a maintenance-free option, I would highly recommend the plastic bushings for you.

If you're constantly keeping up on maintenance on your trailer and you're really diligent about it, then I would recommend the bronze bushings, because they had the potential to last longer if properly maintained. We'll begin our installation by getting our tires out of the way. We're just working on the back axle for this one. We don't need to remove our front, but depending on what all you're doing, you may need to remove yours as well. When we're moving your wheels, you want to make sure you got your trailer supported on the frame by a jack stand. You can use just a regular floor jack to lift it up.Once you've got all your tires out of the way for the area you're going to be working in, we can then start removing the bolts for wherever we have damaged bushings.

To replace the bushings, you just need to remove the hardware first. For this particular set up here, the bolts are pressed into these shackles on the head of the bolt side, so we're going to remove both of these nuts and take the two out at the same time.If you're going to be replacing your bushings with bronze bushings, you also need to replace your bolts with wet bolts that have a grease fitting on them so you can grease those bronze bushings. We're going to take our bolts off. The bolt sizes can vary depending on your particular trailer. For ours, we're going to be using a 7/8.

And you may or may not need to hold the backside of the bolt when removing these. They are supposed to be stuck inside of here, but over time they do rust, and things wear out, and they may not be. It's not a bad idea to put a wrench on the other side and hold it.If we place our floor jacks underneath the U-bolt on our axle, we can relieve a little bit of pressure on it to make it easier to get the bolts to come out. Now what I like to do to get them out is I to just thread the nuts back on there just a little bit, and then tap them out with the hammer. Putting the nuts on it just helps prevent you from damaging your threads when you're tapping on them.We can just slide it out there. You can see on our equalizer we've got a brand new bushing in there, but on our trailer here we've got an old one. And this old one here is so worn out that I can actually just push it out. Now, if you are unable to just slide out your worn out bushing like this, one of the best things to use to take them out as you can use an old bolt. If we use another bolt that's slightly smaller and just place a flat washer on it, we've got a nice flat solid surface to drive it in. And we know since we're hitting all the way around, we're not going to ding up the outside of our bushings here with our hammers as we're driving it in.We're just going to hold it in place, and we're just going to tap it in with our hammer. A lot of times these tap in pretty easily, but every now and then you do got to hit them pretty hard depending upon the rustic condition of your leaf springs. We can now take our new wet bolts and we can slide them into our shackles. Now, if your old shackles are all worn out and the holes are all worn out, then I would recommend replacing them. We've got replacements here at etrailer. But if there's just a little bit of surface rest on them and the holes are fine, then you're okay. You can just slide your bolts right into them.Once you've got them slid in, we can come over to our bushing here and align them up. It is a bit of a snug fit. Sometimes you need to adjust the jack a little bit. I'm just going to ease up until they slide through. On the other side now, we can take the other shackle and place that it on there, and then thread our nuts on.We can now tighten up our nuts. Now, what you're going to want to do is hold the backside of your bolt with your wrench, because our bolt does have splines in it, and it's going to spline into the inside shackle here . because the head of the bolt here has got those splines. We don't want it to spin while we're tightening it down, because it's going to rip the splines off and prevent it from working like it's supposed to. So, we want to hold it steady and then tighten it down, and that will draw the bolt into the shackle, and draw them tight together. I do like to work back and forth with them just a little bit just to make sure that they are going to get pulled in.Once you've got it tightened down, it's always good of you to double check yourself and look here on the backside. You want to make sure that the head of the bolt is flush all the way up against the shackle here. Sometimes the splines will prevent the bolt from going all the way in. And it's not that it's preventing it from going in. Just means you need to tighten it tighter until it draws it all the way flush. We can then go back and lubricate our bushings. Now, we're only going to be greasing the bronze bushings, so that's going to be just this top one here on the leaf spring. You can now repeat this for as many damaged bushings as you have. Just remember that if you're replacing them with the bronze ones here, you need to have those wet bolts so you can grease them. Now that we've got our wheel back on, we can torque it to the manufacturer specifications. We're ready to hit the road. And that completes our look at Dexter's replacement bronze bushings.

MUST HAVE ITEM. Our camper is 3 yrs old and towed less than 2k miles total yet the plastic bushings had already worn thru to metal on 12/14 bushings. Be aware I had to push an old bolt thru and spin it to hone out the bushing so the new bolt would fit but everything was cool once I did that ad hoc engineering step. Using wet bolts lets me now lubricate so I’m sure these will last for years.

I mean what can I say. They are brass bushings for the trailer. They seem to be just what I needed for my trailer suspension upgrade and with proper maintenance they should last a long time.

Delivered ahead of schedule. Product was as expected. Replaced the nylon bushings on my double eye leaf springs.

The brass bushings were excellent. They were fine. The instructions for the kit were not complete. I had to use a wheel puller to get the greasable bolt properly seated.

I purchased this set in order to replace a new bushing that was deformed by an under-sized eye on the OEM spring. I also bought a set of replacement springs at the same time. All went together as it should have.

The bolts and bushings look good. I didn’t give 5 stars because I’m not familiar wth suspension repairs, so assuming they’re of good quality based on etrailers array of products and sales people who are interested in following up on what they sell to see how it worked out.

George J; Thanks for expediting these bushings, got them a day earlier than quoted, need drier weather to install them. Broke a spring a couple years back and need to replace the plastic bushings it came with and to match the rest of the bronze bushings in the suspension.

As far as I know they are great. This the only way to go with this product, replace those NYLON s with something more perminet.

Bronze are a lot better than the plastic junk

- K71-291-00
by:

First time I used these bronze bushings rather than plastic. 5* because they installed easily. Tip: I use a long standard bolt with a same-size bushing/sleeve to knock the old bushing out and install new bushings so they don't get deformed. Also clean and lube the spring eye after removing old bushing for easier install.

- K71-291-00

They fit nicely, looks like good qualit y.

As advertised...make sure you clean out the eyelets in the springs really well, I used a round file in a drill and cleaned all the rust and burs. Used a large C-clamp to press them in and worked great. Great customer service from e-trailer as always...and will keep doing business with them.

Comments
The trailer has been to PA and back to Maine...been used hauling 10K skiddsteer around, roof shingles, lumber...you name it and the new shackles grease-able style with the new bushings keep the trailer steady and true. Again...great service from etrailer!

The size and weight of the replacement springs are very nearly identical to the originals except for the bushings. I got bronze bushing to replace the cheap plastic ones. Even they have almost too much gap which means to check on them and all other moving parts during and after each trip.

- K71-291-00
by:

coupled with the heavy duty shackles, I expect these bronze bushings to last 20K verses the nylon 10K. Just my opinion, and I have confidence in these products to do what they are supposed to do better than nylon bushings and standard shackles.

- K71-291-00
by:

I was trying to save a buck by trying to make bushings out of brass. After failing and struggling to make things work I bought these bushing. Sooo much easier and the shipping was fast. Love etrailer for all the how to videos and carrying everything that us trailer folks need.

- K71-291-00
by:

Great replacement for the plastic so called lifetime bushings that don't last.. these with "wet" bolts that can be greased and you'll get much longer service life. I used a 3/8" socked extension to push out the old plastic bushings, then pressed the new bushing in with a press, but a good sized vise or C-clamp should be able to get the job done.

  • Comparing Bronze and Nylon Bushings for Trailer Suspension
It really just depends on what you are looking to get out of the bushings. Bronze bushings, like part # K71-291-00, will last longer but are more noisy and it is recommended to use wet bolts like part # 126B2 to keep them lubricated. Nylon bushings, like part # SP05-060, are much quieter and can be used with regular bolts like part # 166081 since they don't need to be lubricated as much. As far as lifespan goes the bronze will last longer but not so much longer that they are much better...
