Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

I bought two of these axles to replace 2 off brand ones that needed brakes, hubs and bearings. These were only slightly more expensive, and got me to a name brand. The kit came with actually extra axle nuts, and you have to assemble the brakes and hubs yourself, which was no problem. I had two slight issues. The first was that one of the brake wires that travels through the axle had a tiny bit of damage, exposing the actual copper wire itself, however there was plenty of wire left to fix this. But it would definitely be a failure down the road if I didn't see it when installing. The second problem I had was more of a shipping issue. They include a tube of grease in the box that has both hubs and breaks in it, the plastic cap of the grease tube opened up, and coated everything and damaged the box to the point that it literally opened up on the poor UPS carrier at my door, dumping the contents on the ground, however shipping issues aren't the main focus of the review, and it only happened to one, not the other axle's box. Thankfully, everything I ordered is tough enough that it was not bothered. Overall, this was an excellent solution to my problem, and I called to order this to double check what I read on the site, service was great, order processed quickly! I will come back for future needs!

Was easy, quality was great. Brakes were easy to wire up and all is working.
I would recommend this axle assembly.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

I purchased this to replace a bent idler axle on an older Pequea utility trailer. I figured it made sense to upgrade to an axle with brakes while I was at it - and I was rewiring the trailer anyway so adding brake wires was no big deal as part of that project.

Installation was simple. I was a little worried about assembling the brakes and bearings just because I hadn't done it before, but I watched some videos and it was very easy. I've put around 1000 miles on it in the year I've had it and it's held up great so far.

I ordered these August 1st and they just arrived 4 1/2 months later. I don't blame Etrailer for that. It's just the way things were with supply since then. Etrailer kept me updated as things changed. Since I live in Maine and will have to install them outside I won't be doing it until spring. I have checked everything over though and the quality looks excellent. I have never had any problem with anything from Etrailer. This package deal was at a great price and includes everything except the U bolt mounting kit which I bought separately.

Installed a yr ago. Perfect product.
One
thing for me though....
I had to buy different fenders because I bought better tires and rims for this new axle which turned out to be slightly wider.
So the original fender would have cut into the tires.
I got everything from etrailer. Axle with brakes fully assembled, controller, fenders, wire harness, connections tires, time and more...and couldn't be happier with cust service, pricing and availability.

Great high quality axles! I installed two of these on a boat trailer with one brake and one idler hub. It was a rebuild from single to dual axles. All the parts were well organized and packaged well and free shipping- thanks etrailer! Good service and value all around. I hauled the boat about 100 miles today and it all works perfectly. A vast improvement in performance.

Axle seem good. The directions for assembly are apparently a copy of a copy of a copy..... ect, making them pretty difficult to read. Difficult enough that I missed the part about how deep to tap in your inside seal. Now we get to do it again.

I purchased these axles and brakes to replace the old axles on my car hauler. Everything went smoothly with this order. I received my axle and hubs much faster than I anticipated. The parts were well packaged and everything is exactly as I ordered it. I had never installed hubs on trailer axles but after watching one of etrailer's instructional videos I had both sides of the idler axle done in less than 30 minutes. I had similar results on the axle that I put electric brakes on as well. Dexter axles with the EZ-Lube spindles are well worth the money. Bottom line I couldn't be happier with the products and service.

I needed to replace the axle on my 6.5 x 16 foot utility trailer, and since I tow a larger ATV and 500 lbs of other gear every day November to March, also needed brakes on this trailer. This kit was a good remedy for me. The videos on E Trailer are excellent, well produced, and allowed me to get the job done quickly.

I bought 2 of these and one idler axle for a 30ft triple axle deck over trailer I was building for carrying a 4x4 truck and two quads. built using these as I wanted a true 7000 lb capacity trailer plus I didn't want to get into the big 8 lug axles. everything arrived in perfect condition, great prices, free shipping on orders over $99. Great company for delivery and back up. I ended up buying two braked axles, one idler, six modular silver wheels and radial tires. junction box RV plug, Hopkins breakaway switch etc. could not have built this trailer without etrailer.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

Due to adding weight to my 17' bass boat, it became too heavy to pull with my caravan without having trailer brakes. With Steve's help, he guided me thru everythi ng that I needed to replace the complete axle, including controller and all accessories. I had all the work done by others, and still ended up paying less than $1,000 for everything. Now, I am legal on the road and do not have to worry about my insurance not covering me if I am in an accident. Everything works smoothly and correctly. I will buy all my trailer parts from now on thru etrailer.

Thanks Steve for a job well done

From your axle tag I can tell you have a 5,200 lb trailer axle that has 86.5 inches from hub face to hub face, 68.5 inches from spring seat center to spring seat center and comes with hubs that have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. While we have axles like the part # 8327816-EB that are the right length, capacity, and come with correct bolt pattern hubs the spring seats aren't lined up perfectly so they would need to be moved. You could just have new spring seats welded on with part # TRSS300.

We do have the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-385-00 that will allow you to use an underslung axle on your trailer. The Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes # 8327816-EB is a 5,200lb axle. It includes 12" brakes and a 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern. As I mentioned previously the over-under kit will allow you to mount this axle in an overslung position without having to weld on new spring perches. The one kit is good for 1 axle so be sure to order 2 of the axle and conversion...

  • Replacement of Lippert 5200lb Axle, Electric Drum Brakes, and Hub and Drum Assembly
Since time is a factor and we do not have the complete axle brake and hub set up, Item # 8327816-EB, in stock (August 2021). I recommend the Dexter Trailer Axle with E-Z Lube Spindles item # 8327816. This axle is 86-1/2" Long with a 5,200 lbs capacity that will replace your Lippert axle. The TruRyde spring seats item # TRSS300 will work well with these axles. Unless your trailer hubs are brand new you should replace both of them and keep the passenger side one around as a spare. I recommend...

  • Replacing Existing 3500 lb Axle With a 5200 lb Axle
When replacing a trailer axle, the spring seat spacing isn't super-critical because you can always relocate those by obtaining new spring seats and having them tacked into place where you need them. The hub face to hub face distance is what's critical. What's the hub face dimension of your current axles? We offer 5.2K axles in the 3 most popular lengths (hub face to hub face) of 86-1/2 inches, 89 inches or 95 inches. • 86-1/2 inch E-Z Lube axle, part # 8327816 for the axle only or # 8327816-EB...
