Bearing, Race, and Seal Information
There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.
The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.
If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.
Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.
Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.
The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.
On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)
To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)
Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

Today, we're going to review part number 20440i-st-60. This is the Dexter Trailer Axle with the standard spindles, includes these idler hubs with the 4 and 4 inch bolt pattern. Axle is 60 inches long and it has a 2000 pound weight capacity. Now this part will include everything shown here on the table includes the axle, the 2 idler hubs, the inner and outer bearings. Now, the bearings races are also included. They are preinstalled in the hubs already. A grease seal is included, the dust caps and then the half inch log nuts and also a tub of the Marine Gray wheel bearing grease.
Now, this axle being right here will act as part of your trailer suspension system. You can use it to replace an axle on your trailer or you can use it to fabricate a suspension to fit your specific application. It is made of a high-strength steel. This is a under slung design which means these spring sits right here, 1 on each end. They're welded to the underside of the axle for mounting your leaf springs too and when you have an under slung design, that will give you a nice low ride height which will make it easier to load and unload your trailer. Now this axle does have the straight spindle.
There's no drop spindle. It is a standard grease application. It does come with the castle nut and the cutter pin and when we do ship this, they are protected on the ends. Basically what we do is the machine finish portion of this axle where the spindle is, that would all be covered with grease to protect it and then bubble wrap around it and then this very thick corrugated tube is then slid over and then wrapped around to fully protect the whole end of the axles. Also protect it from any damage from the shipper. Now, the spring sits the spindles are all welded on. Also you might notice it might be hard to see but on your trailer axles, they will actually have a bend in the middle that actually go up and then down so this center of the axle will be up higher and this bend will actually create a 0 camber angle which will give you even road to thread contact across the width of your trailers tire. Basically what happens is when the weight is put on this axle, it would push down on it and even it out and inaudible 00:02:07 that the angle of the wheel is correct for your towing needs.
This will help as far as straight line acceleration and give you steady controlled towing. Now, this cast iron idler hubs are very sturdy and durable. The bolt pattern is a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern. It does have a wheel stud diameter of a half inch so it does use the included half inch by 20 log nuts and this will fit wheel sizes from 10 inches to 13 inches in diameter. The weight capacity on this axle is 2000 pound. Outer diameter of the tube of this axle is 1 and 3 quarter inches.
The diameter of the spindle itself is 1 and 1/16 inches. Now on an axle, there are multiple ways that you can measure the length of your axle but the 2 most accurate are going to be hub face to hub face and spring center to sprint center. Now hub face to hub face on this axle would be a little bit harder because the hubs aren't installed but basically once your hubs are installed on each end, if you would measure it from the base of 1 wheel stud on the hub down the axle to the base of the wheel stud on the other hub, that will get you a hub face to hub face. What I'm going to do is give you an idea of the hubs uninstalled but that'll still give you an idea where they'll be positioned. You can basically see roughly it's going to be 60 inches on this 1 hub face to hub face length. Now, the other 1 is spring center to spring center which you measure from the center of this spring seat to the center of the spring seat down there. Now, this will give you the approximate width of your trailer itself but on this will be pretty easy to measure. Center to center, you can see 48 inches on the spring center to spring center length. Basically if you're replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining the trailer's weight capacity you need of both pattern on the wheels you're using, the brake type if it does have brakes and then the 2 lengths, the hub face and spring center lengths. That should do it for the review on part number 20440I-ST-60, the Dexter Trailer Axle with the standard spindles and the idler hubs. .

Trailer axle measures 60" from hub face to hub face and 48" from spring center to spring center. Includes idler hubs - with bearings, races, and seals - for 10" to 13" wheels.Great Service, very helpful, axle fit perfectly dimensions were exact. shipped out and arrived earlier that promised. Dexter did not include "D washers and E- Trailer sent them to me right away so I could finish my trailer project. Overall Great Jo will do business with them again. Thanks. 159174
Quick shipping. Seems to be a quality product. Good price. Excellent customer service and question answering. Would be 5 stars if I could have found an axle short enough for my project. I had to cut down the 60” one I ordered. Not necessarily their fault, I’m just building a small trailer. Will order here again for sure 572753
Easy to follow instruction. I am proud I did it!. 517892
Made my trailer new again. Perfect fit, holding up well. 453109
The axle came right on time when they said it would be there. It was easy to put together and all the parts were there. It was helpful that there was grease included and plenty of it! I also appreciated that the company sent new lug nuts for the tire. The previous ones were pretty old. I was trying to put a 2016 axle on a 1974 hand built trailer and this axle fit perfectly. I will definitely use etrailer again. 265051
Still working great!!
